Allow anyone to get any product in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site.

Sometimes Dell posts some products only in certain channels; for example home offices cannot get Vostros.

It is like saying that business users want Vostros, but nobody in, for example, a home office, would want it. But some home offices might want it. For some people in home offices, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all products actually.

In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who do encounter this.

An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all products in all of your channels.

Add higher screen resolution to all home & home office laptops

I have been using a used [another brand's] business laptop that has a high screen resolution. The cheaper Inspiron laptops can only go up to 1280x800. I cannot be productive on a screen that small any more. At least bump it up to 1440x900 or equivalent. I have basically been forced to shop in the Small Business section to find an affordable computer with a higher screen resolution. 4 Comments »

Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

LED Backlit Displays for Higher Resolutions for XPS M1530

The release of the LED backlit 1440 x 900 display is great, but needs to be expanded to higher resolutions most notably the 1680 x 1050 resolution which a large number of people use and are most comfortable with. It would not be a threat to the M1730 as you can keep the LED Full HD 1920 x 1200 for it alone. 5 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

I dont know why dell hasnt done this yet. switch all monitors on desktops and notebooks to LED. did you know that you can run an LED screen at full brightniess and it uses less power than a LCD monitor at the lowest brighting level?!? its cheaper, its energy efficent, and it needs to be done! promote this, if you demote i wanna know why! 47 Comments »

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

We're considering an option that would allow customers to "buy in” to differentiated packages of service, including where they choose to have the service delivered from.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback!

Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, yes, the intent is to explore a “for fee” buy-up option from the standard warranty.

In this option we are considering, the standard warranty service would not go away, it would remain free with system purchase. And the buy-up option would be for incremental offerings, which might range from selecting to be served by local customer service agents in your country to other services such as system tune-ups, virus and spyware removal, etc.

Some of these incremental offerings might be included as the standard offering for premium products, but they might also be offered as an option for any customer to buy into – independent of the model of system purchased. For example, airlines have frequent flyer programs and Club Lounges. If you are a premium customer and fly first-class, you automatically get access to the Club Lounge. If you fly economy-class, you don’t, but you can still buy your way into the Club Lounge.

Add some colors!

In my opinion nowadays colors like gray or black are getting too old. Why Dell does not follow other companies like Sony or Apple or the tiny Flybook. People like colors because it expresses their personality, not everybody is a businessman or businesswoman, we like colors. For example white is getting more and more popular but there are other trendy colors out there.

So PLEASE ADD SOME COLOR TO YOUR NOTEBOOK AND DESKTOP LINES and make them look like jewelry and not like a piece of plastic, do some cool design.

We like to show a laptop to which people say WOW. So the "WOW STARTS NOW"!



The new Inspiron and XPS notebooks do come in colors now, but stay tuned for more ways to customize the look of your PC.

Support higher speed memory

Stop offering quad core CPU, SLI graphic cards, and terabyte hard drive systems that are limited to older low speed memory. Customers who purchase these higher end systems want their components to be up to date and cutting edge, so drop the ancient 533-667 mhz memory. Also stop crippling motherboards so that they wont support higher speed memory so customers are stuck without a choice. Give customers current memory, 800 mhz and up, for their brand new systems. 2 Comments »

List Rejected Ideas

Besides having "Ideas in Action" a category for "Rejected Ideas" so people don't continue to try and add rejected ideas. And the posters of those ideas don't get bent out of shape for losing their idea from the site, they can still see it in the "Rejected Idea" bin, it can hopefully drive them to produce better ideas or push them over the edge (good or bad, hopefully good). I guess keeping the history of the IdeaStorm alive. Just lock the comments or the mocking might get out of hand.

A Site for the Computer Literate, and a Site for the Computer Illiterate

The way the ordering interface is now, it's easy to confuse the computer illiterate with the glut of computer lingo out there (How many market brands has Intel released over the past 2 years!?), but also, you can annoy the computer literate by not giving enough detailed information.

It's hard to straddle the middle road...

The ordering pages should adjust to the type of customer.

If the customer is not well versed in computer lingo, you should give them a very simplified ordering interface designed to cut the excess and tell simply what they need (i.e. do what Apple does).

If the customer is computer literate, then give them a sophisticated ordering interface that gives them all the information and specific options they want and desire in all its gory detail. 1 Comment »

Actually promote Desktop Linux

Dell offered desktop Linux once but seemingly did not market it as much as it could have, the company did not make money on a Linux desktop and decided to stop offering it, this is one reason that dell needs to effectively market its newest offertings
as a desktop alternative!!!

Without a REAL attempt to market this it will die like attempts by so many others, Dell has the resources to market this!
