Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptops

Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me. 5 Comments »

Allow anyone to get any PC in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site.

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice 12/18/07

Look at the Dell Home and Home Office page for the XPS M1710 and the XPS M1730 http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb_gaming?c=us&cs=19&l=.... I can get the XPS M1710 in the Home and Home Office channel of the Dell site.

But look at this Dell Small Business page (which is for all XPS notebooks that are offered in that channel) http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb?. The XPS M1710 is nowhere to be found in the Small Business channel! But why?

It is like saying that home users want the XPS M1710, but nobody in a small business would want it. But some people in small businesses do. For some people in small businesses, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all PCs actually.

For example, suppose that a home user like the designs of the Vostros and wants to buy a number of them. But they are not offered in the Home and Home Office channel, so he needs to go to the Small or Large Business channel to buy them.

Or suppose that a business user wants certain XPS systems that are offered only in the home channel, so he has to go there to buy them.

In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who get into such problems.

An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all PCs in all of your channels. 2 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Use SSDs instead of HDDs in Severs and Storage Subsystems

Servers and Storage submitted by markus.gossmer@stc.ch 12/01/07

I think it would be a good idea to build Solid State Disks (SSDs) into servers and all storage products. Because of the stability and reliability of SSDs, the administrator could do everything without RAID, which would simplify the configuration and reduce the amount of disks or increase the netto disk space - apart from other SSD-advantages like better speed or less power consumption. Further on no admin has to worry about failing hard disks any longer. 4 Comments »

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Inexpensive "Home" Servers

Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by gnome76 02/26/07

It would be nice to have small servers aimed at the home office and enthusiast market. I persoanlly use a server at home for a home office and family network. Utlizing the server for backups, storage, firewalls, etc.
It would be nice to have a server specifically marketed and designed with this set up in mind. Offering Linux and Windows as options would also be worthwhile as many perfer different setups. These could be standard dell towers just with some added RAM, extra hard drives and hard drive space and no soundcard/modem/monitors bundled in. I had to take a older dell upgrade it and tear out some parts to make it a server, but it would have been nice to have on direct like this. 3 Comments »

Home Media Server

Dell submitted by waltc 02/24/07

Get back to your Dell "roots": Every dorm room (and home video/HDTV setup) needs one of these.

A small, *quiet*, expandable media server for home networks and small offices.

- Small & quiet enough to be near a TV, a bed in a dorm room, or next to a router in a home office.

- Wired Ethernet, WiFi and USB connectivity into the network.

- Configurable with 0, 1 or 2 internal hard drives, expandable with optional USB drives.

- Bare drives can be quickly swapped in and out (and placed in a bank vault) for backup purposes.

- Priced competitively with competitive NAS servers.

- Features:

+ Media Server for pictures, movies, MP3's, etc.

+ Automated backup server for networked PCs.

+ Can serve as NAS (Networked Attached Storage).

+ Optional RAID configuration.

- Extra Credit:

+ HDTV outputs for the TV.

+ Audio outputs for the sound system.

Seriously, any self respecting "dorm-room PC builder" could make one of these-

an old PC, Linux, removable hard drive trays, ... But will it look & sound good next to my TV? Or fit on that small bit of shelf space next to my router? Will it give me fool proof backups? And will it integrate nicely with other media devices?

I'm counting on you Dell, I don't (quite) see anything out there that does everything I want. 2 Comments »

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime

Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese 02/17/07

Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.

Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it! 168 Comments »

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is: We're Monitoring You

Environment, Monitors and Displays submitted by googideas 02/17/07

Mr Dell, uour website states this about flat screen monitors:

1.) Performance and Value: Dell is the leading flat panel monitor supplier in the world, which gives us enormous economies of scale. That, combined with our direct business model, allows us to offer the latest display technology at competitive prices.

2.) Low power consumption and heat emissions - low electricity and cooling costs. Durable - predicted to have up to a 6-year lifespan. Disposal - expected to have low disposal costs. Lightweight and minimal plastic - easy to recycle. Few environmentally-sensitive materials.

If both are true, then why not take the initiative and completely discontinue regular monitors? I would venture that the additional per unit cost would drop more, and the resulting price would then be close to the current regular monitor's price.

You can brand this as an environmental contribution, and no one is going to object to "being forced" to own a flat screen.

The best companies take risks and set the pace. You can offset any loss of margin with optional add-ons like choice of plastic colour, chromed screen adjustment buttons, etc. Do we want a flat-only environment? It's coming anyway, so why not be the first? adam 51 Comments »

Dell should partner with Fon

Broadband and Mobility, Dell submitted by sprice82 07/22/07

Dell should partner with Fon and make Fon routers included in a new computer purchase. This would allow people that buy a computer from Dell to connect to a Fon Hotspot for free. 1 Comment »

Buy GETRONICS

Dell, Service and Support submitted by fxmulder 07/22/07

GETRONICS is a WW company and certainly would help Dell gather momentum in Managed Services.

Dell is going quite slowly at developing this area - why not buy one of the largest player and "dellize" it ? Comment »

Dell should offer option to remove VISTA - Blank disk is better than with VISTA preloaded

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by makuchaku 06/20/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Dell should offer an option of removing the default OS - Vista/XP when a user is configuring his order on DELL's website.

Apart from saving a few crutial $$, this is needed when a user already has a licensed copy of the OS.

:-)
