End PC Payola | Pioneer a PC Builder Code of Conduct

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/20/07

Dell's image was damaged by the $1bn Intel kickback scandal. Many in the computer industry believe that Microsoft's grip on Dell and other PC Builders is airtight due to secret deals and marketing kickbaks. Consumers appreciate lower prices on new Dell PCs thanks in part to bundled 3rd party software, however we are not permitted to choose the software that is pre-installed, and kickback deals are not transparent.

In the music recording and radio broadcasting industries, similar shady practices are called payola. Please, end PC payola, and give control back to your customers.

We encourage Dell to pioneer a voluntary PC Builder Code of Conduct, and regain the public trust.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise payola circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Transparency at Dell is necessary for true consumer choice. For example, transparency can be improved by providing the choice of pre-installing quality free and open source software (developed with near 100% transparency). Cast your vote to have the OPTION of buying a new Dell PC pre-installed with Linux and other free software like OpenOffice.org. 80 Comments »

Dell EV | Design and Sell an Electric Car

New Product Ideas submitted by dhart 02/21/07

Dell possesses the fundamental resources necessary to produce an electric car for the 21st century:

- Dell brand name and a global market
- direct sales infrastructure
- global supply-chain network
- manufacturing expertise
- electronics expertise
- customer service expertise

Of course, driver and passenger computer systems in a Dell EV would integrate smoothly with Dell PCs at home and in the office.

As a bonus, merely announcing development of a an electric car for mass production would send Dell's environmental credentials skyrocketing.

Dell is in a unique position to launch disruptive technology into the auto industry with an inexpensive and unprecedentedly mass-produced electric car. Partnering with an existing small automaker would be a rapid route to design, regulatory compliance and mass-production. An EV as a product should be considered as a top-end evolution of the consumer appliance or gadget rather than its commonplace treatment as a relic of the 19th century. 13 Comments »

Treat Puerto Rico as part of the states

Service and Support submitted by arthau 04/28/07

Puerto Rico is treated as a foreign country even though it is part of the US.

Sales, service, product offerings for Puerto Rico are different from those offered for US based customers.

Other companies treat Puerto Rico as part of their US organization and are very successful.

Offer XPS M1710 BluRay Kit

Gaming, XPS products submitted by muzicman82 04/28/07

I purchased an XPS M1710 notebook in early December 2006. Not two weeks later, Dell announces that the same model is available with a BluRay drive, and is nVidia PureVideo certified.

Granted, at the time of my purchase, this new hardware option was not in my budget... but what if I want to add it later? Do I spend another $3,200 on a new system of same model?

And so, my idea is simple. Offer upgrade packages that give recent or past purchases additional upgrades, preferably at a discounted price than just ordering the "spare parts".

For example, if I want this slim BluRay drive in my current system, you could offer that packaged with the current top of the line nVidia graphics card. Or perhaps bundle it with additional memory.

Many Dell customers including myself currently resort to online marketplaces such as eBay to find "after market" parts, or those we can't simply purchase from Dell directly.

While I am speaking for my own instance, upgrade kits for other systems and models would certainly be a huge benefit. 2 Comments »

Dell should sponsor American Idol

Dell submitted by guardianxps 03/24/07

Hey Dell,

During the last show of American Idol they showed how some large fortune 100 companies were contributing to a good cause to help the poor.

Dell has already shown its ability to understand, recognize, and act on the enviornment. So, maybe it would be cool to see Dell work with a good cause and helping the poor both here in the US and in Africa.

Just a thought. 2 Comments »

Dell Should Do Hard Drive Replacement

Service and Support submitted by jhirschi 04/27/07

Under warranties providing on-site service, Dell should replace failed hard drives and reload them with originally-shipped software. It's unacceptable that Dell ships replacement hard drives as a user-replaceable part and expects the customer to install the drive and reload the operating systems, drivers, and original software. 3 Comments »

Dell's Problem

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mra1493 04/27/07

The problem with Dell is that they do not custimize their machines at all. They need to come up with some unique applications and/or funcions if they want to differentiate their computers from others. 1 Comment »

Monitor Adjustment settings for night use

Monitors and Displays submitted by dellvin 04/28/07

Dear Dell,

I have noticed a common problem with on screen controls.

When you adjust brightness, the on screen dialog box opens up and burns a hole in your eyes wth its brightness. Surely the dialog box could be made "greyish" and also adjust its own brightness with the background image. To my knowlegde nobody since the dawn of time has bothered to fix this problem.

While I am ranting, do display vendors realise the bluish tint from monitors upsets the sleep body clock particularly when used late at nights. (Like the BSOD for people)

Maybe a "periscope" version of monitor biasing could be released with a reddened screen for night / darkened room use.

Thanks. 1 Comment »

Notebook design and color

Laptops submitted by ron912 04/28/07

I'd like to see a white notebook computer. The finish could have a porcelain/enamel matted gloss finish. Think the Beattle's White album, and, more recently, Philips Electronis simplicity designs.

Also, think about getting more creative with the Dell logo. The plain "Dell" in an oval is kind of boring. And the same old logo on new designs doesn't make the user think this is really a new look. Comment »

Acquire gamestop/EB Games

Dell, Gaming submitted by gpride 04/28/07

If we're serious about diving deeper into the gaming segment, why not acquire Gamestop/EB Games and set up Gaming kiosks in the stores? We'll get to showcase our gaming systems, directly to gamers, and dip into the sofware revenue stream, to boot. Comment »
