Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

the new Dell Carputer

New Product Ideas submitted by billanderson 02/23/07

Carputer: a computer to be installed in your car. Either in your trunk, or under your seat, or in your dash in a 2DIN slot. The indash model can even be mororized so the screen pops out and the system turns on with the touch of a button. And hides away again when you are finished, to be away from prying eyes.

Reference a site like
mp3car Wikipedia: http://www.mp3car.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)

- carputer will be able to run multiple O/S like Windows or Linux
- one of many multi-purpose GUIs like Roadrunner will give user easy access to all the features using a 7" touchscreen installed on the dash
- carputer is integrated with the car's electrical system, so it starts when the car starts, and shuts down gracefully when you stop the car.
- electrical power is monitored and conditioned for the car's DC electrical system
- bluetooth connectivity allows the wireless network, cell phone, keyboard, mouse etc all to be seamlessly connected

Use the carputer to
- play your mp3's through your car's sound system
- play your video files and view them on the 7" LCD touchscreen.
- be your navigation system. Customer can install software like MS Streets and Maps, add a GPS sensor even after the basic carputer is installed
- surf the net or do email with the built in wireless network card
- built in satellite radio ability

All of this can be built for not much more than the price of a medium priced car radio.

Everyone I talked to said YES they would buy one. If they didn't have to worry about buying all the individual pieces, and learning how to connect all the electrical components together and hooking into the car's electrical system. Dell could do it all and provide a pretty much turnkey system

Thanks Mr. Dell

30" monitor with video inputs (3007WFP version 2.0)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays submitted by brandon 02/23/07

Please make a 30 inch monitor that has more inputs than just dvi and vga. A big monitor like that could be used to watch tv, play video game consoles, and watch hd-dvd's. The 3007WFP should have composite, s-video, component, and hdmi connections and be hdcp compatible. This monitor is a high end investment and with all the added value from these connections, more people would be willing to purchase it. Also, I think some of your other monitors have these connections so why can't the biggest monitor have them too? Comment »

Disable mousepad by Fn keyboard combination on notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by mikeweb 02/23/07

A possibility to disable the mousepad by a key combination (Fn). This makes it temporary possible to disable and only use a USB mouse. The mousepad is positioned in the middle of the notebook (better looks in case of design) but it can be annoying with ten finger typing. The left hand is often moving the mouse or double clicking by touching with only the palm of your left hand. Comment »

Downloadable disk image (based on product serial)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell Web Site submitted by mikeweb 02/23/07

If your harddrive crashes or you want a bigger drive you have to find somebody with an OEM Windows CD. Only then your serial works. And you have to get all the drivers again.

A downloadable disk image will do the trick. Ghost it on the new disk and done... Comment »

Kitchen Laptop

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by kauaian 02/23/07

Make a laptop than can be bolted under a home kitchen cabinet to be used with wireless keyboard and mouse. The display should be able to pivot or the view flipped. Or, maybe design mounting hardware because I may want to use the same laptop somewhere else in the home.
Laptop is mainly used to access the internet so lower grade graphics, small drive and sufficient memory. Thanks Dell. Comment »

National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us.
