Standardize Power Cables for Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood
08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Re-style the laptop housing to look like a race car.

"Transformer" fans and others that like race car styled products would be the first responders. Obviously this is not for everyone. This concept may involve relocating the internal parts so that everything will fit and the balance would be correct. All sorts of new visual design features could be added… for example the interior could be where the CPU is located; maybe the hood could open to expose simm chips. Real rubber tires. Lights that work. The exhaust pipe could be the CPU heat pipe. Trunk that opens to expose the I/O connections. Etc.

Remote hand-shaker
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by doctorcox

Computer users are presently able to communicate digitally and via voice and video and but no "tactile" communication is provided. This suggestion is to add a new I/O device as standard equipment to ALL desktop and laptop computer keyboards; an 8-way joystick where one person manipulates his/her joystick while another person feels the exact movements--in real time. In the send mode you would manipulate while the other feels your movements in the receive mode you feel the movements. Incidentally, the joystick would replace the arrow buttons and serve double duty as a traditional joystick.
This is a type of virtual reality. How would you like to shake hands with the President using the remote joy-stick? With this functionality you could actually "feel" someone else manipulating the joystick in your hand.
The "remote hand-shaker" is just a novelty to introduce the concept. The functionality could facilitate everything from very personal communications to remote "surgery" and other robotic-like functions by interfacing physically or digitally with the joystick. Ideally, all sorts of peripheral devices will be created by Dell and/or other third party developers. Someone will create the "killer app".
The framework would be owned by Dell giving them exclusive control over the commercialization and licensing of the concept.

Give Dell employees better discounts so they can experience the customer experience
Dell submitted by pwalker
02/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell employees tell me they don't get discounts on Dell products. It's time to give Dell employees good discounts so they will more frequently experience your customer experience. This is important. I believe motivating them to be Dell customers more frequently will generate a lot of ideas for improving dell.com, products and services.
We did update our Employee Purchase Program in November.

Organize the sales pages by need, not product line
Dell Web Site submitted by sernovitz
02/03/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
The Dell shopping experience is all about Dell -- not the user. Currently, you have to walk through each product line, narrow by model, etc.
This isn't very useful to my mom, or anyone new to Dell. Even the latitude/inspiron choice is never explained.
Start with features -- walk the user through the choices until they get the perfect PC.
What size do you want? What are you going to do with it? Etc.
Check out our new Assistance Seeker to shop by what you need, not by price!

Sell a Better Book Reader than Amazon's Kindle.

Sell the iLiad from iRex Technologies.
I looked at Amazon's attempt to nickel-and-dime people to death with the Kindle, then went out and bought an iLiad from iRex Technologies.
http://www.irextechnologies.com/products/iliad
While the Iliad is more expensive at $700, when all the fees and subscription costs for the Kindle are totaled in a year Kindle would cost more.
The iliad has a larger display and higher resolution than the Kindle with more (16) grey shades, it uses standard wifi for internet access to a FREE account on the iRex servers, and includes complete documentation for a variety of ways to produce documents in different file formats optimized for the iLiad display -- again for free.
Also, the iLiad display integrates Wacom Penabled input using Electro-Magnetic Resonance. This allows navigating menus, taking notes and making annotations in documents directly on the screen with a stylus.
In my use of the iLiad a full charge lasts a little longer than a work day with the unit turned on all day and frequent use of the stylus.
I take iLiad to work every day. I use it constantly to review specs and design docs, and take notes during meetings. Everyone who sees it is amazed by it.

Take the Lead in Encouraging Online Reading
Education submitted by joehuck
04/07/07
Create a browser/eBook reader (or browser plug-in) that makes online reading a joy rather than a chore. Most eBook readers are based upon the metaphor of the page, and most web browsers are based upon the metaphor of the endless vertical scroll. Neither of these metaphors works well when it comes to the presentation of a large amount of text that is meant to be READ. Here’s a link to an article outlining one approach to this problem: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/joehuck/Pages/cScroll.pdf The idea is basically to adopt (and adapt) the metaphor of the columnar horizontal scroll for the presentation of digital online text. The metaphor would enhance readability by favoring the flexible presentation of text over the creation of pretty pages with all elements (including text) nailed in place. Here’s a link to a very simple demo program that incorporates some of these features: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/joehuck/cScroll.zip Similar ideas are being explored by various eBook and web browser developers, but in many cases the results are still inadequate, and (in the case of eBook readers) require the acceptance of new file formats. A company with Dell’s resources ought to be able to come up a browser/eReader that can be used both for browsing and reading books online, that is flexible enough to be of use on devices of all sizes, resolutions, and proportions, and that uses standard XML and/or HTML. There are a number of challenges (e.g. the handling of images and charts that demand a fixed format) but these are also opportunities for novel design solutions. If the project is successful, it will allow making full use of the exploding database of online textual material and should have a significant impact on education.
