Dell Support Driver Download

Service and Support submitted by xlerate 03/14/07

So I have to reload the OS on my D600, & the original Dell driver CD is long gone.. no problem right?
Just head over to the Dell support site, enter your service tag (which should correspond to your exact system build) and download the drivers for the 5 devices in system manager that have the yellow exclamation marks on them...right?

Wrong!

Because entering your service code that should correspond to your exact build (hence the devices) does not give you the drivers for your build.

I entered my service tag and got a whopping 115 results for my system.
115. (http://tinyurl.com/2uu8b7)

So I narrow it down to "network" because most importantly I need first to get this notebook online, and the network breakdown yields (35) .http://tinyurl.com/2o5pck

Really?
35?

So the resolution as I see it, would be to have a service tag that actually corresponds to your exact build.

When entering this service tag, your system build would come up and the available drivers for download would be limited to your build with the option for additional being secondary.

Now I know this feature is 1/2 way there, because after entering your service tag you can see the option for "original configuration".

...2 hours later, I still cant find my NIC & Wireless drivers.
I guess I have to download them all and play "maybe this'll work". Comment »

Service Tag should know what hardware is installed

Dell Web Site submitted by dialsoft 02/26/07

Hiya,

I am a service provider who services dozens of Dell Machines a month and often I am put in a situation where the operating system must be reinstalled. When I do this I find it great that Dell has an awesome driver selection for the machines on their website often second to none. The issue I have is that suppose I have a wireless ethernet capability in the machine, why does the service tag selection show 8 choices for the wireless card? Cant it know what was shipped with the machine? Its not that often that a laptops wireless card is changed. Also the wireless card hardware is not often identifiable as well by sight. it would be great that if the service tag selection could actually indicate what was shipped in the machine in the driver list section. 6 Comments »

Make Service reps speak better english

Service and Support submitted by henryat1140 02/20/07

I really was disappointed in Dell's customer service when I could not understand what the person was saying. YES, they were trying - that was evident - YES, it a technical meatter, and in many cases is complicated. Their Indian or Pakistani accent was so thick I just couldn't understand what they said.

On three or four calls it was embarrasing to me to have to ask the person to repeat themselves so often just because I couldn't understand their Indian or Pakistani (or whatever) accent.

I think to myself "you bought an Ameicna computer from a company in Texas, WHY do I have to listen to someone who doesn't speak in a manner they can be understood. "

Hire Americans for your customer service is my suggestion. That way at least the language barrier will be removed.

Moderate or ability to vote-out a topic

IdeaStorm submitted by jlauro 02/27/07

Many of the items need to be cleaned out. I will not even talk about the problem of duplicate item. For example, in the Servers and Storage area, we can easily find several ideas that are laptop specific. Why bother having categories if they are not enforced, and there doesn't appear to be a way to vote misplaced articles out. Many times the ideas are good, the only problem is they spammed across all categories. 20 Comments »

Update video (and other) drivers for laptops throughout warranty period

Service and Support, Software submitted by bob2007 03/16/07

Video cards that are built into laptops are frequently left behind in driver updates. Drivers for laptops that are still under warranty are typically never updated or updated only in the first year they are released. Video card/chip manufacturers frequently update the "core" drivers for their video chipsets. With most laptops using slightly modified versions of these chipsets, it should be quite simple to update these drivers more often. These driver updates could significantly boost the performance of these laptops. I can understand that you would not want to support 4 year old chips that are past their warranty, but those of us that paid extra for 3 or 4 years of gold support should get a machine that has drivers that are updated regularly during the warranty period. This also applies to other device drivers that should be updated. Comment »

Dell Drivers and Software

Dell Web Site submitted by gkings70 04/25/07

Why does Dell Service web pages ask for a service tag to identify the exact system you purcahsed and the exact service contract and then contiue to provide you with a variety of drivers for that one system? Can't Dell provide the exact drivers issued for the hardware of that particular system? If I am trying to recover a system, why must I figure out which of three wireless drivers or pci buses are installed? Makes no sense except prehaps laziness. Explain or fix... 4 Comments »

XPS drivers

Gaming, Service and Support submitted by forestfire_88 04/21/07

I have two Insp XPS laptops, both Gen1 and Gen2 models. When I purchased these laptops, I was expecting to use it for gaming as well as other tasks. But a few months after the purchase of Gen2, there are no longer any new version drivers on the Dell support web site. It's 2007 now, and the video card driver posted on dell support site was released in 2005. The worst part is that nvidia.com and ati.com drivers does not work with the Dell systems. I pay over $3000 per laptop, I think the least Dell can do is provide updated version drivers, especially for the video card driver for the XPS line product. So, PLEASE UPDATE THE DRIVERS!!!!!!!!!! 2 Comments »

More details please

Dell Web Site submitted by cliffordp 05/02/07

Especially with only selling via direct-sales, Dell needs pictures, pictures, and more pictures...along with info, info, and more info. When I buy a computer, I want to be able to see all the ports on the back, know the power supply wattage, know the number and location of USB ports, motherboard specs, etc. As a partial owner of the company and someone who's purchased many and influenced others to purchase many systems from Dell, I think the company would benefit from increased transparency and info of a system. It would also help turn "built but not bought" systems into "bought" systems because of a greater connection to the system. Having built and not bought many systems before, I would really connect if I could SEE and sort-of FEEL the system since there's no store I can do this in. I hope this helps the company and others; it would really help me have more confidence in buying a system online. Thanks for Dell's IdeaStorm. 8 Comments »

BOYCOTT VISTA!

Operating Systems submitted by reg 03/21/07

Dell Dudes,

Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.

The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.

US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.

The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.

Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,

The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.

Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.

Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?

BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!

If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.

Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?

Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista. 818 Comments »

Update NVidia Drivers for Quadro NVS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products submitted by willjwylie 04/30/07

Can we please see and update to the Dell Quadro NVS 110 video drivers for the D620. I am seeing countless problems with this card and there hasn't been an update for the driver in almost a year. Considering this is the flagship laptop for enterprise users, this video card is pathetic. 6 Comments »

Driver Access on Support.Dell.com

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by tripmeist 04/27/07

Dell has recently made changes to their Drivers and Downloads page on Support.Dell.com. The changes are actually very confusing for the average end-user. The problem is two-fold: (1) When we enter our Service Tag #, we get a list of ALL drivers that seem to be available for this system, RATHER THAN the drivers that are associated with the specific configuration as the system shipped, and (2) There is nothing on the site that allows the end-user to perform driver installs on the system after an OS Reinstall, in the proper order that will specifically avoid problems afterward.

I suggest the following resolution to deal with both of those scenerios. It is simple, and practical.

(1) Break the drivers as listed on the site into two categories ... (A) Drivers Associated with Your Shipped Configuration, and (B) Additional Drivers for Compatable Components. List all drivers, utilities and updates associated with the shipped HW and SW configuration under Group A, and list all other drivers, utilities and updates for Compatable Components under Group B. This would be consistant with the methodology found on the Drivers and Utilities CD, where all applicable components are listed under "My System" with a check mark.

(2) Dell techs are instructed to advise customers that their drivers need to be installed in a specific order for the OS Reinstall to work properly. At the top of the "Drivers and Downloads" page associated with a specific Service Tag #, Dell should list the specific order of the respective Driver Install, with instructions as to what one can expect during the process. This component of the web page would obviously be different for Desktops and Portables.

This will work toward the ultimate objective of the computer owner actually being able to take ownership of his or her own computer. Your Tech Reps are constantly pointing Dell Customers to this site, but when we get here ... pages like the one I've referenced are confusing and lead us to call back in. Not only does this have a negative impact on the Customer Experience, but it also has a detrimental influence on Dell's overall efficiency with respect to handling the call flow into Tech Support. I suspect ... these suggestions could cut your return calls by 10%, possibly more, since a good portion of your resolutions are to perfrom an OS Reinstall. 2 Comments »

Make spare parts prices sane.

Sales Strategies submitted by macka 03/14/07

Don't take it when it comes to upgrade prices. It's Dell that is losing out here.

If the prices Dell charged for upgrades were sane (ie 20-30% premium), then I personally would buy Dell replacement parts (for out of warranty or machines needing an upgrade).

Unfortunately in many cases, especially for laptops, the prices Dell charge for upgrades after P&P and VAT are three to six TIMES (no kidding) the price I could buy on the open market. This is just nuts.

While I prefer to keep all the inventory supplied by a single manufacturer, I insist on buying all our after-market parts on the open market. Probably half of our IT spend on hardware comprises these after-market parts, so it's a lot of money Dell is missing out on here. 4 Comments »

Show the drivers/firmware updates I actually need

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by jgv999 04/20/07

In the drivers support section even when you enter your express service code, there are still a mess of drivers and firmware updates that do not apply to the machine as shipped.

Show a default view of the latest drivers and firmware updates that apply to the specific machine I have. You have the information so make my life easier :) 10 Comments »

Ship a regular clean system please!

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by euripedes 04/24/07

Why do you insist on installing all manner of trial software and broadband offers? When I uninstalled all the rubbish that came on the system it became very unstable and bluescreened regularly upon Windows startup.

Deleted all partitions, did a complete clean reinstall and what do you know?

It runs like a dream...

Please don't tar all users with the same brush, if we want a clean install why can't we have one? 2 Comments »

OS Reinstall CD's

Service and Support submitted by xhotardx 02/24/07

How about auctually including real install cd's for the original OS. So when you have to reimage I dont have to spend 2 hours uninstalling stuff that I dont want. Why can these not be provided for free? If a consumer is paying for a license there is no reason that you cant front the 4 cents and give them a copy of that software (even microsoft is cool with that). 10 Comments »

Original System Configuration pages need to provide additional info

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by alovelan1 05/07/07

The parts list format on the Original System Configuration pages under System Information needs to provide a more user friendly version of the system's configuration. This user friendly version should look more like the summary pages that are generated when customizing a new computer. Links should also be provided to the appropriate drivers for the listed components. Comment »

Provide support for standard manufacturer drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Service and Support submitted by alovelan1 05/07/07

Offer new computers that can use standard manufacturer drivers.

Prime examples where the hardware is advertised as being a standard component but requires a Dell specific driver are the video cards/chipsets in notebooks. e.g. The Dell Inspiron 8100 has a GeForce2Go but identifies itself as Dell 8100 Video rendering it incompatible with the standard nvidia drivers, the last Dell driver for it is from 2003. The Dell Latitude D810 has the same problem, it uses a Mobility Radeon X600, but ATI's drivers cannot be used with it and the latest driver from Dell is over 18 months out of date and the computer in question still has 2 years left on it's warranty.

Offer a firmware/driver update that would allow existing computers with these components to work with standard manufacturer drivers (nvidia, ati, intel, broadcom, atheros, etc...). 3 Comments »

Up to date video drivers: ATI requires Dell's permission...

Gaming, Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by zorgkang 05/08/07

Dell doesn't bother "forwarding" to us video card driver updates released by ATI. There is an easy solution though and all that Dell has to do is say "ok" to ATI. Please read on.

When trying to update directly from ATI, I am told that I can't update my system and I should ask my laptop manufacturer. Frustrated with this, I search for another way to update my drivers and find much information on

http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/< found out that ATI is not to blame, but Dell is. ATI comments: "We are working diligently on attracting tier1 OEMs to participate in the mobile catalyst program. Once that happens, we will update the validation tool to allow the mobile catalyst drivers to install on those platforms."

So this thread is to strongly insist that Dell join the mobile catalyst program immediately! Please let Dell know we are not satisfied with the video card driver support they provide! 6 Comments »
