Don't overly emphasize Posting of ideas
IdeaStorm submitted by mistern

We are currently facing the problem of having tens of duplicates for some ideas, wasting space and time.
I think part of the problem is that you have a 729x108 and a 163x41 button for posting ideas but no real emphasis of PRIOR RESEARCH.
Often, the duplicate is only a few clicks away. I hardly can stand that.

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)
Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.
With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...
Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...
The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.
Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*
Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o
* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi.

Notebook Monitor Shield
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jhmisher

Many laptop users, for work or leisure spend many hours indoors on their computer. Believe these people would like to do this outside, given the opportunity, example the beach, front porch, back yard etc.. only that the elements, like sun glares, make the monitor too hard to view outside.
I propose some type of internal or external shield that could make the content on a notebook monitory viewable outdoors.

Laptop as a portable KVM
Laptops submitted by akili
06/20/07
Many times I have wished I could use a laptop as a troubleshooting device for a server or any other headless PC - using the VGA port on the laptop to use just the LCD portion as the display.
In this suggestion, I'd like to go a step farther - include two way USB or PS/2 interfaces, so a laptop can literally be used as a portable troubleshooting tool, allowing the internal mouse and keyboard to be used to control the remote system.
If such a mode could be enabled without having to shut down the current OS the system is running, such as by putting it into some sort of sleep mode first, all the better.
I think this would be quite valued by technicians and administrators, based upon past commentary I've seen lamenting the lack of this feature even in modern notebooks.

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

No OS Preloaded

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.
Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

More RAM!
Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm
01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels
Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris
02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.
How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.
Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.
If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option. In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart
02/17/07
Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

FreeBSD or *BSD support
Service and Support submitted by andilek

Right now there is lots of companies and projects connected to *BSD. Most of them have difficulties when growing to clusters and external FC storage systems, due to lack of drivers and support for these. I believe there is huge opportunity for Dell to get this market.

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast
Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Freedom of choice : os & applications (us & row)
Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by shaoul
02/20/07
Hi,
i am not the first one and probably not the last one.
a freedom of choice for the OS means you may have (& pay for) ms windows but can choose for a linux (mandrake, suse, novell, ubuntu) here dell may or may not sell an additional subscription or have NO os installed at all. (cheapest)
a freedom of applications ms office, word, works, .... or equivalent 'open' softwares this will also result in some financial benefit for the customer
if you want to stick to a microsoft all-in at a good price -> be welcome if you do not need or want the m$ tax, you pay less
now, why take a machine with an os while i can download it ? - maybe you will not have to pay for the open os when installed by dell - installation is done, no need to look after drivers. this can be difficult under linux, but also under windows hp support in france refused to help me install win xp pro because the machine was sold with xp media. close to none of the hw was recognized (no driver to be found on hp web site) i thought to call hp us and i got the drivers. rather long intl call...
the same is true for the applications some customers already have paid for 'office' or windows, why double ?
last word and conclusion :
it is a matter of : CHOICE LIBERTY CHEAPER PRICES

Certify desktop/laptop hardware components for use with Linux
Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rkl
02/22/07
If Dell don't want to ship Linux pre-installed on desktops or laptops, then the next best thing is to certify all the hardware componens in those machines that they work correctly with Linux. Dell would have to choose, say, the latest versions of the three most popular desktop Linux distros (e.g. Ubuntu, openSUSE and Fedora) and check that all the hardware components work (live CDs and some sort of test suites might come into play here).
Only if all three distros supported a hardware component would it be marked with a penguin and, say, a green tick (use a red cross if there's any failure). If all the hardware components worked with Linux, then the whole machine gets a (bigger) penguin and green tick.
Dell's long-term aim should be to reduce or eliminate the number of red crosses on their hardware - they can do this by either switching to another equivalent hardware component supplier that does have Linux support or sponsoring the development of Linux support for "red cross hardware".
Note that once all the hardware components get green ticks for a particular laptop or desktop model, then Dell can consider shipping Linux pre-installed with that desktop or laptop - this is a major step for Dell to take though, because it means a whole support chain for Linux.
At least with the cerification idea on its own, users can see quickly how "compatible" the machine is with Linux (maybe give it a percentage rating of Linux compatibility based on the number of green ticks out of the total number of red crosses+green ticks?), but not *demand* Linux support from Dell - which pre-installed Linux implies.

A ban for Novell on my Dell
Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by speedy

Novell, in partnership with Microsoft, attempt to the free development of Linux. If my favorite PCs producer, Dell, preinstall openSUSE or other software on their PCs I don't want to buy anything anymore. We must boycott Novell if we like Linux.

Become the open source OEM
Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909
02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.
In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.
