Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments »

No Limits! Make **all** choices available **anywhere** in the world

Sales Strategies submitted by mrw 09/16/07

First example: The Germans are second class customers, because they don't get the same choices for Ubuntu Laptops as in the USA. We here in Switzerland are even third class customers, because we do not get an Ubuntu Laptop at all.

Other example: The choices I can make for a notebook depends on how I walked through your shop! Sometimes for the same Model, I can chose a low end Harddisk, sometimes not. That's absolutely ridiculous! Please allow any possible hardware combination!

Allow to select any matching hard disk in any laptop (or desktop)! Allow to setup any kind of memory, especially e.g. one(!) 2GB module instead of two 1GB modules, give the choice for between either a mirroring display or an anti-glare display for any available display size and resolution. If technically possible, allow to choose between NVidia and ATI, and allow to chose the Memory of the card. Allow to completely deselect the operating system and all kind of installed software.

First: Make all offers available anywhere in the world!

Second: Do not limit the possible combinations!

Shouldn't the customer be king? Let us all choices! 34 Comments »

Quad Core for Inspiron Desktops Now

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Inspiron products submitted by bg02446 09/04/07

I'd like to see quad core processors offered on Inspiron desktops ASAP. Quad core processors aren't terribly expensive and would be of real benefit to those of us (possibly excessive) multi-taskers. 11 Comments »

Automate BIOS, Driver, Firmware Update for ALL systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by phubert 09/17/07 **REVIEWED**

**
I thought I'd already posted something like this...
*
Dell already has an ISO available for servers that will scan a range of Dell servers and update BIOS, firmware (e.g. PERC RAID controllers), and drivers in a single reboot.

I don't know whether Dell has this for Linux as well.

However, let me suggest this could also be done via an ONLINE -scan- of the system similar to Microsoft Update ... only for ALL OSes Dell sells and for all _systems_, servers, desktops, workstations, and notebooks!

tell us how much dell pays for a vista license

Dell, Operating Systems submitted by howlingmadhowie 09/12/07

i for one would be very interested in knowing how much a copy of vista increases the price of a new computer from dell. i think it is a perfectly fair request that the customer be told this. 6 Comments »

Put wheels on the bottom of PC cases (as an option of course)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 09/10/07

Put wheels on the bottom of PC cases (as an option of course). Mag wheels, alloy, spinners, chrome, gold or just plain shopping trolley plastic wheels. Put wheels on the bottom to make it easier to wheel in and wheel out the PC case when you're changing all the bloody cords at the back.

LED and OLED displays

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by mike2912 09/14/07

I would like to see more of the laptops and even desktop screens utilise the LED sisplays. The colors are richer and they consume a lot less power. The XPS 1330 is excellent so why not spread the technology to the rest of the products. 1 Comment »

Distribute Ubuntu Cds

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by badblood 09/18/07

Believe it or not I need a copy of Ubuntu that I can buy or pick up free in a computer shop.

Why?

Because my internet connection is bad and I just simply can't download Ubuntu and all the driver updates and what not. And I am not alone. About the fastest internet connection you can get in Africa is ADSL running at 4megps, through an unreliable phone line that times out every two seconds. I think Australia isn't much better. What's more there are limits on how much you can download before your account gets suspended or you need to pay more.

Ubuntu needs distribution support, as do all open source offerings. Don't assume we all have lightening fast connections.

Dell distribute Ubuntu CDs.

And anyone reading this who owns a computer shop, you should distribute Linux CDs too!!

Thanks - I really hate my internet connection, truly! 16 Comments »

Dell Bounty -- Ubuntu Bounty

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Community, Linux submitted by tekhawk 09/07/07

anyone ever look at the dev pages on ubuntu's website
well they have bounties on there that people can try to claim by solving issues and developing part to software that the team doesnt have someone that can do it already or doesnt have the time to deal with it

i think it would be an effective system for dell to use with its linux offerings offer bounties on drivers and other such things im sure that if given the specs for some of their wireless network card and a bounty someone would gladly race to see who can build the drivers first

something that if the specs where released for the interfaces and bounties where given that i can think of are

laptop web cams
802.11n cards

any other things people can think of that given the information needed could be community deved post it here maybe dell will see the light and let us help with drivers and get this ball moving faster "and maybe make some extra cash on the way" 11 Comments »

Ad Campaign: Meet Mark Shuttleworth

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by limulus 09/04/07

There are currently ideas under review, such as "make ubuntu shine" which relate to advertising Dell's Ubuntu systems. If Dell decides to do some ads, here's an idea for an ad campaign:

"Meet Mark Shuttleworth"

Mr. Shuttleworth is:

* South African
* a multi-millionaire
* a space tourist
* the sponsor of Ubuntu, a spiffy OS :)

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are in their 50's; Mr. Shuttleworth is in his 30's
('Ubuntu: the choice of a new generation' ala those old Pepsi ads? ;)

To see more of Mr. Shuttleworth, have a look at the video on More4 News (click "Watch the report")

Have Michael Dell introduce him to American audiences :)

Ad Campaign: Families Switching to Ubuntu

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by limulus 09/04/07

There are currently ideas under review, such as "make ubuntu shine" which relate to advertising Dell's Ubuntu systems. If Dell decides to do some ads, here's an idea for an ad campaign:

"Switching to Ubuntu"

Find one or more real families that are interested in a Dell Ubuntu system, but previously only had Windows experience (and don't actually need any special Wine-incompatible apps) and follow them for a while to get good sound-bytes and string those together into a commercial. Some themes that should become obvious:

* before-and-after comparisons of their Windows boxes with their shiny new Ubuntu systems

* the joy of exploring and discovery in the land of free software. 'Wait... all these thousands of programs available in Ubuntu are really FREE?' :)

* "It just works" Sally on GAIM/Pidgin, Johnny using Firefox, Dad using OpenOffice.org to do a spreadsheet, Mom downloading pics from a digital camera, Grandma playing Sudoku, etc. Something for everyone. No one has to fight their computer to get it to do what they want. No dreaded command line.

* Would you go back to Windows? (I think we can see the answer to this by now ;)

If Dell hurries, they can have these ads for the Christmas season!

Dell Just Give Choice a Chance! was Dell Let Customers Choose Windows OS's as an Option on all your products in all parts of the world!

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jorge 09/15/07

Yeah! We want to have Windows offered as an Option like the Mouse Pad, where you can pick it or not pick it, options are great! Options let your customers configure their systems as they like them, you know customize their systems, much like you like options in choosing how your stocks are doing.

Options are a great thing for Dell to offer and right now there is no option of selecting to add Microsoft Windows OS's as a option, yes all of them too. So allow the customer the OPTION of selecting to have or not have any of the Microsoft Windows OS's (all of them), or you can spin it as, to NOT to have it or have it, so the paying customer can decide what they want! (being repetitive so those who didn't get it the first time)

Once again, let the paying (as in funds to pay Dell employees) customer choose to have or not have Microsoft Windows OS's installed. Not allowing it is very communistic in nature, is Dell a Communistic Company? You know where they force one selection no matter what the customer actually wants?

Does Dell represent a trend to move America the USA to a Communistic Political Movement?

If Dell continues to not allow its Paying Customers the OPTION of having or NOT having Microsoft Windows OS's on the computer systems it sells it means Dell is pushing a Communistic Propaganda on America and on to the World. Remember a Democracy allows choice and America is a Democracy.

Ad Campaign: What can you do with Ubuntu?

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by limulus 09/04/07

There are currently ideas under review, such as "make ubuntu shine" which relate to advertising Dell's Ubuntu systems. If Dell decides to do some ads, here's an idea for an ad campaign:

"What can you do with Ubuntu?"

Find one or more people who have bought a Dell Ubuntu system and have them show off what they can do with their systems; string the clips those together into a commercial. Some themes that should become obvious:

* easy software installation and updates

* command line not necessary (Ubuntu is very much a GUI OS)

* compiling software not necessary

* full range of applications

* 3rd party proprietary apps, like Flash and Google Earth

* all the little games you could ever want (e.g. Sudoku)

* 'it just works'

* "wobbly windows" and other spiffy cool effects for fun :)

Don't waste time on Linux or any other Open Source software

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by aiac13 03/05/07

Disregard all calls from these Open Source fanatics to offer Linux or any other OSS. Focus your attention on improving service and support to your existing lines of business. Any efforts to provide and support Linux or other OSS will most likely cause support and service to your existing lines of business to suffer. Don't legitimize Linux or other OSS, these are softwares and technologies only for the hobbyist, ignore them and soon they'll fade back into the woodwork, where they belong. 19 Comments »

Dell Offer the Blank Keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by jorge 06/02/07

Dell one way to save and improve International sales is with this blank keyboard, it works for any language! Even English! With such a keyboard no one will complain that the keys are not set for their language and Dell can offer stickers (at extra charge) with the key letters and symbols needed for those not so familiar with a keyboard. It also works great for Linux users as there is no predefined keys so they can configure as they wish, no matter how badly.

Here's a view of the blank keyboard.

This keyboard is also good for the environment as when a customer throws it out any international recycling country can actually use the keyboard instead of dismantling it for copper. 18 Comments »

Offer Vi Reference Mug as option or included with Linux OS's

Linux submitted by jorge 05/23/07

Dell should offer or include the Vi Reference Mug for Linux OS sales. This will provide novice (aka noob's, hey need to use Linux lingo) a handy editing reference as they are weened off of Notepad, MS-Word and other GUI based editors. This will reduce the amount of support calls as to why they can't edit a file or get out of input mode or into it, not to mention why their files are filled with ~'s. 10 Comments »

Dell with Opensuse (not only Ubuntu )

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by xhen 06/01/07

I have read recently about this new idea of DELL which is perfect, but in my opinion (working as IT manager On Veolia environment for 8 years) I think dell should try opensuse instead of ubuntu, I think is more easy for the Final User who need to change from windows to Linux.
With opensuse you needn´t run any sudo command (ok sometimes yes but are less) to install things like ubuntu.
In my personal opinion and after my own experience,recently (i´m not very familiarize with linux) I have spent 5 days trying to install ubuntu in one computer and finally I have decided to give it up and install again Opensuse 10.2 which is more efficient for the final user and more friendly.

I hope Dell give us more options not only ubuntu, especially nowadays when Microsoft and Novell have made a deal to get a better relationship between Opensuse and Windows (actually a better relation of windows with Linux-Opensuse not on the contrary), I think this would be one of the most important distribution of Linux for companies which want to change windows for Linux.

Best Regards ;)

Go ahead with more Points!!! 12 Comments »

Linux

Linux submitted by crimlawfed 02/28/07

Consumers should be able to chose whichever distro. of Linux they want. Dell should put a list of the most popular on their website. A consumer could choose between one on Dell.com or any other. 3 Comments »
