Dell Aero Monitors for MS Vista

Monitors and Displays, Operating Systems submitted by jaybarrios 04/27/07

Just want to share my ideas about our hardware designs that adopt the current trend of technology.
I’m talking about Windows VISTA the new operating system from Microsoft, what if we have such design that really matches the system that is running on DELL’s hard wares.

Here are some of my concept designs that I made:

I’m not so sure about the branding but I think it’s cool to name this as Dell AERO monitor “designed to further enhance the Windows VISTA AERO experience”

The transparent framing makes it more distinct for customers that DELL is their 1st choice of hardware to run their Windows VISTA operating system. 8 Comments »

Stop gouging Windows Vista prices

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by cullend 04/29/07

Come on Dell! You charge an ADDITIONAL $200 to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. THAT IS ABSURD! We all know that you use OEM, as you are an OEM... The price for Windows Vista Home Premium is 111.99 from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116202) . For Ulimate OEM, it is 189.99 via (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116213) We all know Dell gets a way deeper discount, that is fine. But when you charge $200 for Ultimate, when the real price difference between the two is $78. Where does Dell get off charging a $200 difference?! Dell, lower the price of ultimate... 7 Comments »

Make spare parts prices sane.

Sales Strategies submitted by macka 03/14/07

Don't take it when it comes to upgrade prices. It's Dell that is losing out here.

If the prices Dell charged for upgrades were sane (ie 20-30% premium), then I personally would buy Dell replacement parts (for out of warranty or machines needing an upgrade).

Unfortunately in many cases, especially for laptops, the prices Dell charge for upgrades after P&P and VAT are three to six TIMES (no kidding) the price I could buy on the open market. This is just nuts.

While I prefer to keep all the inventory supplied by a single manufacturer, I insist on buying all our after-market parts on the open market. Probably half of our IT spend on hardware comprises these after-market parts, so it's a lot of money Dell is missing out on here. 4 Comments »

Why is Windows XP not available on the Dimension 9200 Series?

Dimension products, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by sparksflyhi 05/01/07

I applaud Dell's decision to offer Windows XP on many computers for those of us who choose not to go with Vista. Why isn't the Dimension 9200 included in the models available for purchase with XP? Comment »

More video card choices

Dimension products, Gaming submitted by stretch4x4 04/30/07

I would like to see dell offer a wider range of graphics cards, especially on its lower end desktops. The C521, E520 and E521 can all be customised to descent specifications except for the graphics card, instead you have to move up to the 9200 just to get a better graphics card but this bumps the whole price up by at least a $1000. If the lower models also came with the option of an nvidia 8800gts or even a nvidia 7900 these could be really good machines without stretching the budget too far. Comment »

Mouse and Keyboard

submitted by dreammru 05/03/07

I guess most of us are shopping his/her 2nd or even 3rd replacement PC so why do I have to accept standard DELL mouse and keyboard each time I replace my PC? OK, recently DELL added the option of selecting upgrade equipment (Logitech), still since I am a lover of Logitech devices I do have such already resulting in above request again: pls. add the option of deselecting any mouse and/or keyboard.
Same applicable to any additional devices and/or equipment such as TV card, additional software packages such as anti-virus scanner etc. 2 Comments »

Technical Support Solution

Service and Support submitted by phonatic 05/03/07

Customers should be given the option to go online & choose a replacement part with an engineer, collection or just the part to be sent thru courier. This should be give only on returnable parts

This would also help customers save time on calling into dell & spending time & money on the call.

The replacement cost or credit could be deducted from the warranty purchased.

but if a customer insits on contacting Dell, we are ready to troubleshoot with the guys in the Technical Support. 2 Comments »

Hey Dell! How about using better quality motherboard?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by area5x1 05/01/07

Hey I got an idea: How about you start putting better motherboards into your computers? Sure it might raise the price, but it's good to know (or not know, for 90% of Dell customers) that you're getting a better product (at least partially) that is upgradeable. Here's a list of sample good motherboards that might be useful for higher-end machines:

- Gigabyte DS3 Rev 1.3
- Abit AB9 QuadGT
- DFI Infinity P965
- DFI Infinity 975X
- MSI P6N SLI Platinum or Diamond
- Asus Striker
- Gigabyte DQ6 3 Comments »

Bring Back the Super Geeks

Service and Support submitted by smilindog2000 05/01/07

In the 90's I helped convince two companies I worked at to switch to 100% Dell. My most convincing argument was simple: "If you have a question about a Microsoft product, just call Dell." Everyone knows that calling Microsoft is a total waste of time, but the Dell support guys would typically first remind me that they don't officially support non-Dell products, but since they knew the answer off the top of their head, they'd tell me anyway. Knowing Dell products isn't enough. Bring back the Super Geeks!

When Dell fired their US based Super Geeks, and replaced them with Indian noobs, I stopped calling. When these guys started arguing with me about whether I needed a replacement motherboard or hard drive on a defective computer, I stopped ordering any warranties on any Dell products.

If Dell brings back the Super Geeks, I'll not only start ordering 3-year on-site service again, I'll start telling my friends to switch back to Dell. I doubt I'm alone here.

Clean-up IdeaStorm

IdeaStorm submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

If Dell expects us to post ideas on this website, they need to remove some of the junk we are currently suffering with.

Make it easier to find articles, especially our own so that we can see our rank.

By the way, maybe they could remove articles with a promotion score of -1000 or something... It only provides clutter anyway... 14 Comments »

Put in cheap video cards instead of integrated

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by area5x1 05/01/07

For example, just put in a cheap GeForce 5200FX instead of an integrated video card. They're like, what, $30? (Newegg current price) And I'm sure you can get them A LOT cheaper at wholesale. 3 Comments »

Recovery Hard Drive partitions are not needed, other solutions are better

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by carganegativa18 04/22/07

When I ordered my laptop, I selected the 120 HD, thinking it would be enough for my school work and photography. To my surprice when the laptop arrived, I only had 85 gigs available. I then took a look at "my computer" and wala, there it was

1. A ten gig partition for Recovery purpuses:
Althoug there are times when one really needs to have a computer back to its factory setting, I think its unfar that the user has to give up 10 GB of disk storage.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
1. Give the consumer a DVD of the recovery ISO,
2. Give the consumer the option, either have it installed or have a DVD for it, I rather pay for DVD, than pay for a larger HD.

2. There are tons of pre-installed software that takes up huge amounts of disk space. Some of that stuff we don't need it, and sometimes we dn't know how to get that software out of our systems.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
1. Ship installations CD's to consumers, and let the consumer deside which software they want to install. Hence allowing consumer enjoy more HD space.

2. Advice the consumer when they are buying the laptop/pc of how much "possible" available HD is going to be available upon arrival of laptop. Had I known I was only going to have 85 gigs left, I would have gotten a bigger HD.

I hope this gets promoted, and I hope that many people feel the same way, that we want what is adverticed (120 gigs, not 85 when the laptop arrives) 21 Comments »

No extra software

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by richhannon 04/23/07

Please stop putting all the junk software on new Dell systems, it takes me many hours and a lot of work to take it off before I send the Dell to my client. I only order Dell systems, desktops and laptops, for clients and I make no money doing so and the extra time to get rid of the garbage useless LITE versions of all the software comes out of my pocket. Most of it doesn't work anyway.

Also, PLEASE continue to allow us to order ANY Dell system with Windows XP Professional on it. I will not be using Vista any time soon and for sure until Microsoft gets it right. I did the same when XP came out, used NT for several years for my Windows system. I have to support clients long distance and we can not handle all the problems with new Windows versions. None of my clients have an in-house IT department I am it and that is how I make my living.

Thanks for great products and support over the many years I have dealt with Dell. No telling how many systems I have "sold"/recommended to clients for you, I have been doing this since 1986.

Thanks again.

Ship a regular clean system please!

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by euripedes 04/24/07

Why do you insist on installing all manner of trial software and broadband offers? When I uninstalled all the rubbish that came on the system it became very unstable and bluescreened regularly upon Windows startup.

Deleted all partitions, did a complete clean reinstall and what do you know?

It runs like a dream...

Please don't tar all users with the same brush, if we want a clean install why can't we have one? 2 Comments »
