Make Laptops more Durable & Water Resistant

Laptops submitted by jrhoesly 04/23/07

Dell need to make all of their laptops more resistant to fluids and accidental spills. (keyboard, ports, etc.) Dell should really come out with a line of extremely ruggedized and high performance laptops and tablet pc's to complete with the Panasonic Toughbook. 8 Comments »

No extra software

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by richhannon 04/23/07

Please stop putting all the junk software on new Dell systems, it takes me many hours and a lot of work to take it off before I send the Dell to my client. I only order Dell systems, desktops and laptops, for clients and I make no money doing so and the extra time to get rid of the garbage useless LITE versions of all the software comes out of my pocket. Most of it doesn't work anyway.

Also, PLEASE continue to allow us to order ANY Dell system with Windows XP Professional on it. I will not be using Vista any time soon and for sure until Microsoft gets it right. I did the same when XP came out, used NT for several years for my Windows system. I have to support clients long distance and we can not handle all the problems with new Windows versions. None of my clients have an in-house IT department I am it and that is how I make my living.

Thanks for great products and support over the many years I have dealt with Dell. No telling how many systems I have "sold"/recommended to clients for you, I have been doing this since 1986.

Thanks again.

Give Chat Sales/Support some authority...

Service and Support submitted by giorgiog 04/14/07

Everytime I have even a question that isn't in their standard script, sales & support refer me to call customer support. What's the point? It's antagonizing.

Give these folks some authority or get rid of the chat option altogether. Comment »

Sponser the Linux Indy 500 car

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by steveoc 04/15/07

www.tux500.com - An Indy car team with Linux splashed all over it - its a goer !!

From :
http://blog.lobby4linux.com/archives/138-Indy,-We-Have-A-Driver.-Chastain-Mot...< Chastain, a legend in the Indianapolis Racing Realm and the owner of Chastain Motorsports has announced his team's entrance in this year's Indy 500. And if we've got anything to do with it...as long as I have one struggling breathe left inside of me, that monster of a race car will have Linux splashed all over it when the flag drops. It will be the first time in history that Linux has been an active participant of the now-famous cry.

"Gentlemen, Start your engines"!"

There are 36 days (??) left till the Tux racer gets its first race. This would be awesome timing for Dell to announce general availability of it's Linux offerings, and BUY some prominent naming rights on the vehicle before everyone else jumps in.

Its a pretty amazing achievement that this insane race car idea has got off the ground :) Comment »

Promote the advancement and involvement of women in computer use and design

Education submitted by badblood 04/16/07

In the United States, the number of women represented in engineering and information technology peaked in the late 1980s. Since then, the percentage of women in the computing profession declined from 35.2% in 1990 to 28.4% in 2000. In computer science in particular, there has been a dramatic drop in women earning bachelor's degrees. A report from the Computing Research Association indicated that the number recently fell below 20%, from nearly 40% in the mid 80s. Research has shown that many misperceptions about computing persist and may discourage women.

Did "Microsoft kill Dell Linux" as the media reported in 2002

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by jmxz 04/17/07

The "idea" in this one is for Dell to explain both the history and the present lack of action.

Back in 1999-2002, during a previous time when Dell teased it's customers with Linux, the media reported that Microsoft may have been responsible for killing Dell

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/03/19/microsoft_killed_dell_linux_states/

"Published Tuesday 19th March 2002 10:35 GMT.
Microsoft ‘killed Dell Linux’
...
Joachim Kempin ...then in charge of Microsoft's OEM business...raises the possibility of threatening Dell and other PC builders which promote Linux.

"I'm thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. ... they should do a delicate dance," Kempin wrote to Ballmer, in what is sure to be a memorable addition to the phrases ("knife the baby", "cut off the air supply") with which Microsoft enriched the English language in the first trial.
...
Earlier memos described that it was "untenable" that a key Microsoft partner was promoting Linux. Kuney revealed that Dell disbanded its Linux business unit in early 2001. Dell quietly pulled Linux from its desktop PCs in the summer of 2001, IDG's Ashlee Vance discovered subsequently, six months after we heard Michael Dell declare his love of Linux on the desktop the previous winter."
Microsoft used to bully IBM in a similar way: http://www.theregister.co.uk/1999/06/10/cut_a_deal_or_you/
"From about 20 July, IBM found it was completely cut off from access to Windows 95 code, and could not continue with development of models incorporating Windows 95
Though IBM didn't take well to being bullied and worked to make Linux a viable alternative in case they were threatened again.

It makes you wonder if Microsoft did it to Dell again this time. Back in February Dell said " It’s exciting to see the IdeaStorm community’s interest in open source solutions like Linux and OpenOffice. " By March there was a lot of talk but little action save for talk of certifications on a few business machines (latitudes). In April - a deafening silence. All the while, though, Dell's been selling Linux Inspirons in China ( http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/65270 ) - so it's not technical problems holding them back. Even if the sell the exact same china model here it would be a big step forward - I don't doubt the community could quickly post ways to set the language preferences to English.

Something's holding Dell back - what could it be?

So it's a two part IdeaStorm idea:
  1. Dell, tell us what happened last time - did Microsoft kill Dell Linux in 2001?
  2. Dell, tell us what happened this time - did Microsoft kill Dell Linux again in 2007?

Keyboards in laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by glpage 04/13/07

Several laptops (such as the Inspiron E1705) have 17 inch screens and are 15+ inches wide yet they have the same narrow, compressed keyboard as smaller laptops. Why not put a more "normal" sized keyboard in the wider laptops? 5 Comments »

In PC Broadband Modem

Broadband and Mobility submitted by kcobley 04/08/07

There is a remarkable absence of inbuilt broadband modems in PC's with the exception of some wifi's. It's about time there was a desktop solution for bradband modems as the modem on the desk is a major nuisance! Comment »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Numeric Keypad on Notebooks

Laptops submitted by tpjoseph 02/21/07

Since notebooks are larger and have plenty of unused space below the keyboard and to the right of the touchpad, can we make a few models with a numeric keypad?

There are probably a HUGE number of engineers, accountants, analysts that would be FAR better served by this addition. The top row of number is nowhere near as efficient as a numeric keypad.

As soon as this feature becomes available, send me an email and I will buy my next Dell notebook.

Thanks. 1 Comment »

Track Stick / Trackpoint / Pointing stick / "nipple" is a MUST HAVE

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by keylime 02/20/07

As a CTO I am having to force our procurement department to supplement Dell with HP as our supplier of systems partly because Dell does not include a proper cursor positioning device on its laptops.

Dell needs a machine that competes with HP's nw9440 (or better). The machine needs at least the following: 17" WUXGA display, T7600 CPU, 4GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm SATA HDD, 667 MHz FSB, DVD+/-RW, 512MB dedicated video RAM, and a pointing stick.

It also needs to be in a chassis that is built like a tank. There should be absolutely no feeling of flexing when it is picked up by one corner while the screen is open. Durability is far more important than weight.

A built-in video camera and a lighted keyboard would be very attractive too.

Finally, the keyboard should be as good as those on an IBM ThinkPad (specifically, the T30). By "good" I mean "with good physical distinction between keys as well as significant travel when depressing a key along with similar tactile feedback". I hate a keyboard where all the keys merge smoothly into each other and have flat (as opposed to concave dished) tops. 3 Comments »

Smaller M2010

XPS products, Laptops submitted by shienarier 02/19/07

I love the design of the M2010, but i think it's a bit big. Hardly portable. How about a smaller version? Perhaps a 17"? I don't like a notebook that ways so much i can't even take it with me on the plane without having to pay extra for the weight. 5 Comments »

A better 17" 1440x900 Anti-glare (non glossy) screen and a black-silver design.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by pmb 02/27/07

I have severals 17" inspirons 9200-9400 notebooks and the "ultrasharp"-dimm screen stinks. In think it's a good idea to have a "middle-cost" professional alternative with a really good anti-glare (non-glossy!) screen. I not a gammer and for works we need a 17" notebooks, why don't sell a Latitude o similar 17" bussiness oriented laptop at decent price (not the overpriced M90 workstation, please!)

In have also a pair of inspiron 1300 with 15.4 screen. These screen are really very good in my opinion, why canno´t put the same quality screen in the Inspiron 9400 line??

Also the white-silver chasis it's really very ugly in my opinion. The general impresion it's they are a bulky and cheap desing copy of Mac laptops...

Please a black-silver design like latitude or maybe Inspiron 1300 it will welcome (why not a inspiron 1300 line with 17" screen option??).

Thanks and please excuse my poor english :-) 1 Comment »

A truly rugged 17" Desktop Replacement Gaming/AV Notebook

Desktops, Gaming submitted by odysseus 02/17/07

I'd like to see a truly rugged 17" desktop replacement Gaming / Audio-Video editing notebook. One with a real tough outer metal shell (not plastic); durable full-sized keyboard; high-end graphics card; first-class high quality sound-card (not codec); larger better sounding, higher powered speakers (10 watts to the sub-woofer, and 5 watts main); audio and video INPUTS (Stereo not the Mono in current models) and outputs; a provision for 2 hard drives that could be configured as separate volumes or RAID: at least 2 firewire-800 ports that actually work as intended (unlike the current ones which are useless); and a choice of either WXGA+ with TrueLife or WUXGA with TrueLife screens, and optical drive. A built-in analog-digital TV and radio tuner should be available as an option (not a plug-in external unit) as well as a remote.

No fancy lights, or preinstalled trial "crapware", just the OS, drivers and full version apps needed to playback and record audio/video (create a true multimedia experience).

Make a unit like this and you'll sell a bundle to a vast variety of people who could use it for a multitude of different purposes, ranging from students away from home in their dorms, to hard-core gamers and professional audio/video engineers just to name a few. 1 Comment »

Numeric Keypad on 17" Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by z_darius 02/20/07

HP, Acer, Toshiba and a bunch of others offer it. HP has even an option of dual HDD. 17" laptops have quite a bit of space inside to pack a lot of goodies.

Most people looking for desktop replacement with the mobility option need the full keyboard. What's the holdup at Dell? 10 Comments »

17" notebook design

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by narbeh 02/17/07

There is a huge unused space between the keyboards of 17" notebooks of dell and their side edges, so i think it's better to have a numeric keypad with the keyboard. 1 Comment »
