Keep the XPS Product Line

XPS products submitted by dabrace1984 May 12

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line. 31 Comments »

Continue to supply Windows XP drivers for all systems.

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by audiofree 07/10/07

Let’s face it, Vista regardless of how Microsoft is trying to possession is not what all customers want. Some of us want to continue to use XP, it’s a lighter faster OS that does what we need. Please continue to support XP drivers at least. I want to buy one of the new 1420s or 1520s but can’t because not all the drivers are available. If you’re not going to sell the laptops with and XP option at least make the drivers available so those of us that want to install XP on our systems can. 20 Comments »

Stop Making Canadian Purchases 20% More Expensive Than US

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by canadaboy Apr 9

I just did the pricing of a Inspiron 1720 on the US and Canadian versions of the web (www.dell.com, www.dell.ca)

The price for the exact same models and warranty (3 year complete care, onsite):

US: $2331
CND: $2767

Difference: 18.7%, $436 Difference

This is not unusual, and it's actually grown very negative in my approach to Dell as a Canadian customer (and I love Dell). It's hard to understand why the cost difference exists as it does.

Now, I understand that each country is tweaked for it's own buying habits (example, the US site starts with a warrenty push, and the options are presented slightly differenty than the Canadian site), and I assume that it's to maximize country based biases into better margins. That's cool (really), upselling through options and the way they are presented is really cool.

But when pricing out the same products, the prices should be in line. Otherwise, just get the feeling the Dell is really a big US company which doesn't care about other country markets. 8 Comments »

Upgradable graphics in the m1530!!! (no more soldered cards)

Gaming, XPS products submitted by theideasman Mar 4

Im sick of my laptop graphics getting old and then finding that i need to buy an all new system. Cant the xps come with modular cards (mxm) that can be upgraded direct from dell if the consumer requests a graphics upgrade. Of course there will be a cost involved but surely it will be better than having to buy an entire new system! 3 Comments »

Instead of offering RM2000 redemption on Blu-ray, offer other configuration without Blu-ray

XPS products, Laptops submitted by programatix Mar 1

Dell Malaysia has been offering RM2,000 Instant Cash Redemption for M1530 with Blu-ray for more than 2 weeks already. http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/notebooks_best?c=my&cs... I wonder anybody here in Malaysia are crazy for this Blu-ray thing.

To increase sale, I think it should be replaced with the following full featured configuration:

  • Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7700 or 2.5 Penryn processor
  • 4GB DDR2 SDRAM
  • 15.4" Widescreen WSXGA++ (1680x1050)
  • 200GB SATA 7200RPM
  • 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT or higher
  • DVD
  • Dell Care Premium warranty

Reduce laptop price as Acer did

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by programatix Feb 25

Dell should reduce its laptop price to compete with Acer in Malaysia. I do not know how Acer manager to squeeze so much in its laptops but still manage to be the cheapest. Take for example the Acer Aspire 5920G specification,

  • Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.20GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
  • Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
  • 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce Go 8600M GT with 256MB DDR2 dedicated graphic memory
  • 15.4" Wide Screen XGA (1280x800) display
  • DVD+/-RW7 with Dual Layer DVD+R write capacity
  • 320GB SATA hard drive
  • USB 2.0 (4 ports)
  • Integrated 10/100/1000 LAN (RJ45) and 56K Modem (RJ11)
  • Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
  • Firewire IEEE1394a
  • 5-in-1 Memory Card Reader
  • HDMI
  • VGA video output & S-Video
  • Surround Spekers with Subwoofer
  • 1 ExpressCard 54mm Slot
  • Integrated 1.3 MP camera
  • Bluetooth ® 2.0 / Consumer IR
  • 8-cell Li-Ion Battery
  • Weight: 3.0kg
The price for the specification above is only RM4199 (about USD1,300)

The following is Dell XPS M1530 with near equal specification with the same specification as Acer Aspire 5920G except the one stated,

      • Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T7250 (2.00GHz,2MB L2 Cache,800MHz FSB) >> (lower spec)
      • 3 USB 2.0 >> (lower spec)
      • RJ45 Ethernet port (10/100) >> (lower spec)
      • 8-in-1 card reader >> (higher spec)
      • Integrated 2.0 MP camera >> (higher spec)
      • Low quality speakers >> (lower spec)
The price for Dell XPS M1530 with the above specification is RM4807 (about USD1,500).

As you can see, the specification for Dell XPS M1530 is lower than Acer Aspire 5920G but cost more.

As an officer in the Education Department in Malaysia, I'm seeing more teachers owning new laptop and all of them are Acer. If the price is lowered, I think Dell laptops will be selling like hot cake in Malaysia.

Stop selling the leftovers in Mexico and at least give the option of buying the same products you sell in USA

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, XPS products submitted by kanoneno Feb 5

I'm interested in buying the M1730, but the thing is that I live in Mexico and here you don't sell that model with the same specs that you offer in the web page of the United States. When you offered the 2.8 Ghz processor in USA you only offered the 2.6Ghz in Mexico. And now you offer the 2.8Ghz processor in Mexico but you dont offer the new Nvdia 8800 GTX, you only offer the 8700. I really want to buy the most actual computer, I work producing video and audio so I need a computer that will last for a long period of time supporting the tasks that I will be asking for (I mean: is not a cheap computer at all). At least offer the chance to buy that.
The thing is that you make me believe that you are only offering leftovers in here, and I dislike that idea big time.
Probably it's only that the web page in Mexico is not actualized. In that case please speak to the web master in Mexico. 1 Comment »

Cla-ri-ty & Co-he-rence!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by cestuila Feb 13

Clarity and coherence is what DELL needs!

- First of all:
Why is it that the Australian (or sometimes Hong Kong) website always have new products and features before all the others??!

=>
. Either, you launch the new product/feature at once everywhere,
. either you wait before you are actually able to launch it everywhere,
. either you INFORM, saying something like: "it is now available in Australia, and will be available in the X,Y,Z countries at such and such dates".

- Second:
Beware of your distributors!
Someone (in another thread) is suggesting that you sell through new distributors such as Fnac. That's a great idea!
But so far, you're selling through Carrefour. Why not. But LOOK! They've been selling DELL products for less than 2 months, and they're already selling an Inspiron 1721 with an Intel Penryn T8100 processor! :
http://www.boostore.com/Carrefour/Produits/portable2/defaut?Prod=M00033377&CC={ (the link is now dead, it seems it has been removed by Carrefour)

=> This raises at least 2 problems:
. Why don't we have the Penryn processors available on the French DELL website if Carrefour is able to sell DELL laptops with those processors???
. Since when is the Inspiron 1721 (AMD-based, just like the 1521, 1421, etc.) compatible with a Penryn T8100??? Don't you have a look at what your only French distributor writes on its brochures/website about your products before you let them publish that information??

Open a Shop in Dubai Airport, among other airports

Service and Support submitted by badblood 11/23/07

Dubai International handled a total of 16,227,528 passengers in the first half of 2007. Dubai airport is really a stopover and people don't often leave the airport. They go there because they are in transit and to buy stuff. So set up a little Dell shop in the airport and make it more interesting.

You might as well open a shop in other transit airports. Why not Singapore and Bangkok airports as well.

Forget about Heathrow as it's too confusing. 78 Comments »

Options Available in USA Should be Available Everywhere

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by icediver 07/10/07

I live in Canada and was under the impression that Dell offered the "No OS" option on all systems. I tried to order an Inspiron 1521 with no OS and was told I couldn't. An e-mail exchange with Dell customer service revealed that the option was only available for all systems in the USA. In Canada, and I assume in other countries as well, it is only an option for selected systems.

There is no logical reason for this type of regional discrimination. Dell should make all options that are available on a system available in all countries, not just the USA. 6 Comments »

TrueLife LCD Display Screens Should Have An Optional Anti-Glare Coating (like camera lenses & eye-glasses)!

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by hjwasson 05/09/07

There are many posts regarding the fact that TrueLife displays are far too reflective for brightly backlit conditions. User responses to the complaints suggest getting a business class display with anti-glare filter - but these displays have not kept pace, are too dim, have poor pixel response rates and often have poor color rendition.

My suggestion is a compromise: Have the option to have TrueLife displays with an Anti-Reflective coating applied - just like those found on photographic optics or eye glasses! Such coatings are not as effective as traditional anti-glare matte screens, but significantly reduce reflections without greatly impacting light transmission (which is why they are used in photographic optics - they actually enhance contrast and reduce unwanted light scatter). They would moderately eliminate most reflections, while still allowing TrueLife displays to be bright and punchy.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-reflective_coating
http://www.firstvisionmedia.com/uww/2005_ar/enhance_properties.html
http://www.firstvisionmedia.com/uww/2004_ar/ar_product_showcase.html
I'm sure that Seiko, Hoya, Essilor, iCoat and others would vie for the chance to open up a new market for their coatings, and thus bring more profits to them (and lower costs to us). Some IdeaStorm members might be concerned about scratching the coating - but consider:

1. LCD panels are already prone to scratching, and care must be taken in their cleaning.
2. Modern Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings, with their multiple layers, are far more resistant to scratching than they used to be.
3. AR coatings tend to repel dust, so the need for cleaning would be less frequent.
4. With the use of a microfiber cloth (and mild liquid cleaning formulations when needed), the AR coating and display will remain pristine for many years of service.

If you would like to see modern Anti-Reflective coatings applied to TrueLife displays (as an optional upgrade) please promote this post.

Use only the best and brightest LCDs for all laptops! No sub-par manufacturers need apply!

Laptops submitted by astudios 02/17/07

From what I understand, today's Dell LCDs on laptops are made by Toshiba, LG, Samsung, etc.. why make it an anticipating "waiting game" for the customer to see which quality of LCD they get when their laptop comes in? The LCD display is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT part of any laptop. Dell.. please, use ONLY the best and brightest LCDs on all of your laptops.

Quick story of my experience.. I'm a huge Dell-fan and buy lots of PCs and laptops from them for myself, my business, and for my friends and family. The LCD on their 700m laptops were the *absolute best* .. After that, I purchased the XPS1210. The LCD was "duller" and I was disappointed. But then I ordered the XPS1410 for a friend and when it came in, I was horrified with poor viewing angles of the LCD. The only way you could comfortably view the screen was when it was PERFECTLY square with your eyes! I was almost ashamed to give it to my friend. Finally, recently, I ordered the Inspiron 6000 (SXUGA?) and was relieved that is was much better. But still nothing like the 700m I used to own.

What happened to Dell's LCDs? Please make this top priority and bring the "wow" back into your laptops! (And oh, another thing, if you could somehow make your laptops thinner and lighter, that'd be great too!).

Thank you for allowing us this forum. 24 Comments »

Provide XP Recovery CD's for Vista customers like Lenovo/IBM do.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 12/07/07

This great idea stolen straight from one of your competitors.

Have a Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Microsoft Windows Ultimate system, but need to continue using Microsoft Windows XP for a while? For a limited time Lenovo is providing Windows XP Recovery CD media as a way to downgrade from Windows Vista.
