How about another update on the highest voted ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 19

It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.

No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.

Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would want to offer the best for their customers, no? 43 Comments »

Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptops

Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me. 4 Comments »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Keep the XPS Product Line

XPS products submitted by dabrace1984 May 12

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line. 31 Comments »

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

Fix XPS 630 front panel

XPS products submitted by doomlord52 Feb 15

Ok, as some of us know, Dell is making an 'XPS 630'. Looks cool, but a pic from CES 2008 makes it look BAD. the fron fan is much to obviouse, and it looks like a bad window. Other than that.... cant wait!

System Update

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by ahazan Feb 9

Crrently in Dell software & driver support dell takes your system tag and shows all available drivers and software for all peripherals that were offered on that system. that could mean 5 video cards 3 wireless nics, 4 CDR drives. It should be more like windows update or Lenovo thinkvanatge system update where it detects what hardware you have (or looks up what was shipped by service tag) and offers you only software and drivers for WHAT YOU HAVE. and also only offers drivers newer than what's currently installed 9 Comments »

Dell must cut ties to Scientology

Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by dakkona Feb 7

A video has recently been leaked from the 2006-2007 Church of Scientology New Year's gathering, where their leader, David Miscavige, lauds a campaign to spread Scientology and lead an operation to "OBLITERATE" psychiatry. And he PRAISES DELL for AIDING them in distributing a booklet of theirs called "The Way to Happiness" all over Africa!

See http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=hfu7Sr50N7U (Dell is mentioned about 8 minutes in)

Dell, if this association with the so-called Church of Scientology continues, IT MUST END. While the beliefs of individual scientologists are not a problem, the leadership is corrupt, members have to pay exorbitant amounts of money to progress, and their tactics in dealing with critics and those who try to leave the organization are despicable. But that isn't all. Visit http://www.xenu.net and http://www.whyaretheydead.net for information.

Regardless of what one thinks of Scientology though, it is NOT Dell's place to aid the spread of a particular belief system or campaign. 124 Comments »

Computers to come with an 'Idiot's guide'/very basic guide for newbies

Education submitted by dinneenp Feb 8

A lot of people that buy computers are totally new to computing (e.g. if they buy a computer just to e-mail people and use internet) and have no IT knowledge.

All computers could come with a VERY basic intro (how to turn on/off, using the basics), like mobile phones do. Not a 200 page booklet.... 7 Comments »

A notebook SATA drive caddy that creates an eSATA connection

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by brian2000r Feb 5

Any Dell notebook with SATA and a removable caddy-based hard drive should also have an optional accessory that is a caddy that, instead of enclosing a SATA hard drive, actually converts the internal SATA connection to eSATA. This would allow us to use our external SATA hard drives as bootable devices on our notebooks, which is very useful for testing OS configurations or just booting from alternate OS's. Comment »

Dell Inspiron 1525 Recommendations

Inspiron products submitted by numbernine Feb 5

Here are some recommendations that i suggest for improving the dell inspiron 1525 line of laptops. I was seriously considering purchasing this system but i think it needs more work.

recommendations in order of my personal preference

1. Change the design of the 9 cell battery to raise the laptop at a steeper angle just like the dell xps 1530, it provides better ergonomics in my opinion.
2. a.Provide better integrated graphics that actually support HD video playback accelerationthat is guaranteed not to be choppy at most resolutions, and good aero glass performance
b.Offer low end dedicated graphics solution (ati or nvidia) for better video playback, aero glass, and overall performance boost for all apps for non-gamers like me.
4.better processors at least up to t7500
5. continue Magnesium-aluminum chassis
6. Offer 12-cell battery
7. glossy exterior and interior finishes for, smoother feel and better paint durability
8. backlit keyboards that are similar to apples hole covered design, but maintain the traditional spacing that current dell machines have. i don't like apples spread out keys. 1 Comment »

Dell U3 Recovery/Utility/Security Smart Drive

Servers and Storage, Simplify IT submitted by jorge Feb 5

Ok, first the soapbox, I've waited long to post another idea, I even caught up with all the new duplicates ideas added since my last one, still two short in voting, just assuming the total is off (again).

Idea: I already posted it on the Forums but since I am now boycotting that site it figures it should go here due to the lack of discussion on technology over there (sorry there hasn't been such Tech. discussion threads Forum mods, don't hate on Facts), opps more soapbox.

Anyway, the idea is for Dell to offer its customers a product to help them in a few ways. First, to help the customer in recovering their systems (desktop/notebook/server) in the case of an emergency when the OS will not boot due to some inconceivable error. The U3 Smart Drive can be used with a nice Dell provided OS recovery tool to help them limp along till they get it worked out, of course since this would be purchased through Dell the Dell U3 support division could help directly with the use of the U3 Smart Drive to help recover the customers system. The customer in buying the Dell U3 Smart Drive would pay for this special support mechanism as well as the drive.

In addition the U3 Smart Drive could be used by the customer to allow them to carry their own and Dell custom and secure applications when them when they are away from the computer in any un-foreseen circumstances, yet in need to use their U3 Smart Drive Applications, such as obtaining data off their "Dell DataSafe Online Backup" (hint hint, nudge nudge).

Dell Developers could obtain the U3 Smart Drive Technical Resources to develop the custom Dell U3 Recovery, Utility, and Security Applications specific to the customers computer model, much like the Dell Diagnostic CD, but in a nice small flash drive. 5 Comments »

Stop selling the leftovers in Mexico and at least give the option of buying the same products you sell in USA

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, XPS products submitted by kanoneno Feb 5

I'm interested in buying the M1730, but the thing is that I live in Mexico and here you don't sell that model with the same specs that you offer in the web page of the United States. When you offered the 2.8 Ghz processor in USA you only offered the 2.6Ghz in Mexico. And now you offer the 2.8Ghz processor in Mexico but you dont offer the new Nvdia 8800 GTX, you only offer the 8700. I really want to buy the most actual computer, I work producing video and audio so I need a computer that will last for a long period of time supporting the tasks that I will be asking for (I mean: is not a cheap computer at all). At least offer the chance to buy that.
The thing is that you make me believe that you are only offering leftovers in here, and I dislike that idea big time.
Probably it's only that the web page in Mexico is not actualized. In that case please speak to the web master in Mexico. 1 Comment »

Split keyboard for tablet/touchscreen notebook

submitted by aves Jan 31

Design emphasis for tablets or notebooks with <=12" screens.

I still find it difficult to input text with tablet designed systems and thus usually resort to the trusty old keyboard to enter text and such.

Keyboard design is similar to Kinesis designed keyboards with separate left and right keyboard sections with the screen in the middle. The sections are mounted to the sides of the screen, opening outwards to the sides exposing the screen and coverng the screen when folded inward. The sections could also be pivoted so as to accomodate ergonomics and optimum viewing angles of the screen. It might also be worth looking into if the keyboard could be detached and reattached or rotated around the screen to accomodate landscape or portrait screen modes. 5 Comments »

drop DHL as a shipping courier

Service and Support submitted by hrabak 06/01/07

I suggest that Dell drop DHL as their overnight shipping courier. I have been generally unsatisfied with their service to my workplace in the past, but this week was the icing on the cake. I'm very pleased with how Dell went above and beyond to resolve the situation, even refunding my shipping fee, but DHL's terrible service was unexplainable and inexcusable. This transaction has raised my opinion of Dell, but lowered my already low opinion of DHL. Though I would love to give Dell my business in the future, if it means waiting a week for an overnight package to arrive, I would consider shopping elsewhere, at least when I'm in a hurry. Please don't lose me (and others) as a customer because of another company's shoddy service! 45 Comments »

Never allow backlit keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Healthcare submitted by pell Feb 1

Please, Dell, never produce or sell backlit keyboard or keyboard notebook light.

The thing is to work at night without strong enough ambient light can cause the strong injure to eyes health. Do not encourage your customers to become invalid and loose ability to work.

Health is more more important than fashion, and beauty, and requirements and requests of sometimes careless end-users.

Moreover backlit keyboards are often bought by parents for kids. How shall you live with knowing your business injure health of thousands of children?
