Make a universal Linux driver CD

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Software submitted by anordal 09/16/07 **REVIEWED**

The problem:
Linux distributions typically don't include proprietary drivers. Even if you are lucky and a driver is available through a package manager, it may not work for you (Package managers require internet access and are stupid). Also, the distributors' implementation of a driver may differ from the official driver documentation and howto's on the internet, making them too difficult to set up.

The solution:
Put together a CD with Linux drivers for all hardware that Dell sells, along with lists of recommended drivers for specific Dell products. I suggest making the lists in html, along with an index.html that links each Dell product to its appropriate list. I hope Dell want to automate the installation process, or improve some drivers. Linux needs more self-explaining and fool-proof drivers. However, the drivers should not be made specific for Ubuntu. This is important. At least, there should be a non-Ubuntu option.

The CD should be sold separately and perhaps as an option with any non-Windows computer. I doubt it would be possible to make it freely downloadable, due to driver lisence restrictions, although that would be extremely nice.

Benefits:
I think this is a better idea than customizing ubuntu, since it would help all kinds of Linuxes to work properly. Buying Ubuntu preinstalled is currently the only sort of Linux compliance guarrantee you can get. That guarrantee is close to useless if other distributions can't operate on the same hardware just as easily.

No more desperate googling to find out what hardware you just bought and what drivers to install. This is one step in making the Linux experience as easy as any windows user would expect.

This is an opportunity for Dell to include whatever software they may want, for example to tweak Ubuntu.

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Delluniversity Student Shop for Europe!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by rseibel 04/22/07

Please offer a student laptop shop for europe with discounts for the one who need them to write papers, do research and spend much time with them studying.

The delluniversity shop is great you have a big market waiting for you in europe.
Find a way to cooperate with the universities, you maybe already deliver products to them.

It is not possibel to get student discount as easy as in the US in Germany for example.

I have to go to https://www.academic-center.de/cgi-bin/pages/dell_notebooks to get an account custimize, than they will order one for me.

- Almoust no one knows about this possibility, you have to google for a while.
- You still have an intermediary ordering the Laptop for you it is not direct, it is not dell philosophy...

Try it in a country you suppose you can earn most, than move to the others, it is worht it.

Please fell free to comment. 1 Comment »

Reposition the touchpad!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by sidharthg 09/17/07

Using of touch pad with thumbs or while typing is very difficult. It better to reposition them on top of the laptop keyboard. That way we can easily use the touch pad with fingers and type faster! Although the keys would have to come down..! But definately the touch pad should be on top for better ergonomics! 3 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments »

Dell's part of an amazing Windows supercomputer.

Operating Systems, Servers and Storage submitted by jmxz 09/07/07

This is a followup (but not a dup) to a previous Idea of an Amazing Dell Linux supercomputer. What I didn't realize is that there is apparently a a much bigger Windows cluster that undoubtedly has many Dell nodes. Who would have guessed that windows clusters could scale that well. The previous Idea mentioned that Dell may not be taking advantage of the PR benefits of the impressive NCSA supercomputer because it was Linux based and Dell seems to hide most of their Linux activities. With the existence of the Windows cluster Dell can say they can do big things on both Linux and Windows supercomputers. Idea: Dell - let the world know how good you are at supercomputers - the first names that pop to my mind are still IBM, HP, NEC, etc.

PS: But Dell, please - before spending any resources on this Idea - focus on the much neglected Top Voted Ideas on IdeaStorm first.

PPS: Why's there no Windows category on IdeaStorm? I'm misfiling it under Linux instead. 6 Comments »

Dells pricing needs to be more competative

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 09/06/07

My son is begging for a laptop, his current Dell Desktop is on its last legs anyway so I decided to look around. I can find a notebook for as low as $319.96 on sale at box stores and from $450 online from manufacturers. The cheapest Dell I can find starts at $549 and has worse specs than what I found elsewhere. I looked at desktops as well and the story is the same. I even checked the Dell outlet and they don't really even discount items that much there.

I'm trying to support Dell but they aren't really helping me help them. They need to be more competative with their pricing. 26 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Can we assume your Linux hardware is inferior because you dropped warranty support?

Service and Support submitted by jmxz 06/04/07

You recently stopped offering any warranties over 1 year on your Ubuntu

http://ideastorm.com/article/show/67951/GIVE_UBUNTU_USERS_BACK_THEIR_EXTENDED...< you aren't supporting the software anyway so this isn't about software quality.

So we can only infer from this that you know something about the hardware that we don't know; and it strongly implies that the hardware in these systems are suspect.

THE IDEA IS: Could you either.

  1. Explain exactly what you know about this hardware that makes you not want to offer an extended warranty on it - hopefully in time for me to cancel my order if it's something scary, or
  2. Bring back the waranties.

Solid State Drive as option in Notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tablet205 03/28/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Definition

A solid state drive is primarily a data storage device, for use in computing applications that traditionally use a hard disk drive.

A solid state drive is based on non-volatile memory instead of the spinning platter and mechanical-magnetic head found in a conventional hard disk drive. With no moving parts, a solid state drive eliminates seek time, latency and other electro-mechanical delays and failures associated with a conventional hard disk drive.

Advantages

* Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
* Faster read time – In some cases, twice or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
* Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk.
* Faster boot and application launch time - Result of the faster read and especially seek time. But only if application already resides in flash and is more dependent on read speed than other issues, eg. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks & reads.
* Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts results in less power consumption.
* No noise - Lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
* Better mechanical reliability - Lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures, which apply to laptops and other mobile devices, or when transported.
* Security - allowing a very quick "wipe" of all data stored.
* Deterministic performance - unlike mechanical hard drives, performance of SSDs is constant and deterministic across the entire storage. "Seek" time is constant, and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up (See: Fragmentation).
* Lower weight and (depending upon type) size
* Faster than conventional disks on random I/O
Check out the Idea in Action on the SSD enhancements Dell is making.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Don't make us buy Vista

Operating Systems submitted by icantseeyou 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

From all of the press I have read it is plain that Vista is a big bomb. To buy the cheapest version I hear it isn't even as good as XP SP2. At the same time you need at least 4 Gig to run it. Offer other options... I don't care if it's Linux, XP, or a rat running on a wheel. Don't make us buy Vista.

You can read more about this the OS options Dell offers here.
