Manufacturing & Supply Chain Management

Dell submitted by teamvertical 05/20/07

Mr. Dell, Mr. Cannon,
I would like to share with you a process to dramatically improve your supply chain and manufacturing operations. I have performed this process several times as a consultant to other Fortune 5 companies and a recent case study shows an average of 89% increase in realized contribution to savings. The methodology is called TLS. This combines the processes and procedures of Theory of Constraints, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma. If you are operationally familiar with the separate methodologies, you can see that each process acts as an enabler of the next step. This combines all the functional tools needed to simplify the supply chain and manufacturing processes and allows for a more simplified and streamlined implementation of new projects (i.e. Kaizen projects, etc.). I would enjoy the opportunity to further discuss how I feel this project can provide an immediate improvement in your venture to increase operational efficiency. I look forward to speaking with you.

Best regards,
James

taller picture to fit the shape of a human face

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by billhays 05/20/07

The use of webcam for teleconferencing.... makes the wide screens less useful.

I've always wanted the option of turning the screen ninety degrees, so I could see an entire piece of paper at once. 3 Comments »

Embedded Linux OS

Linux, Software submitted by bogdano2 05/20/07

How about an Embedded mini-Linux with Firefox browser?

This would ensure that the PC was useable when:

- no OS was installed on hard disk

- hard disk failed

- OS was somehow crippled due to virus, boot config error, file system corruptions, etc.

...and woud remove the need to keep a Knoppix-like CD/DVD lying around.

There are countless examples of embedded Linux OS's with very small footprints and browsers.

Lets face it, we've all been is situations when we just did not have the right CD/DVD to get us out of a bind. This feature would give all of us the ability to get what we need as long as the machine had a working network connection.

No OEM Junk software, revival of recovery DVD/CD's NOT partitions

Desktops, Software submitted by mgin2k3 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

First, I hate it when I buy a computer and right when I turn it on out of the box, it's got a lot of junk software installed (AOL trial, Nortion Anti-Virus trial, etc). Get rid of these trial and non-trial OEM softwares or at least give the customer the option of not having them installed. I end up wasting so much time trying to uninstall all this junk anyways and I'm sure I'm not alone. I like having a clean install when I get a new computer (or when I'm recovering). And by clean I mean Windows (or whatever other OS the user may enjoy) and NOTHING else. Secondary OEM software can be included on a separate disc for the user to select manual installation (or request preinstallation of for new purchase orders).

Secondly, recovery partitions are terrible. Aside from the fact that they waste harddisc space, if the harddrive were to become toast or to be upgraded, not only would the user lose the original installation, but they would also lose the recovery data. Has this single point of failure not come to anyone's attention? CD's and DVD's can be preciously taken care and you never have to worry about losing both the installation and recovery partition all at once.

left-handed keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by fingers 05/20/07

I'm left-handed, just like 10 % of the population. I do a lot of keyboard work ont he computer for my business, so i bought a left-handed keyboard from an online left-handed store. I paid about $100 for a simple keyboard, but it doesn't work very well.

Then i got an email from them that the only brand of computer it is not compatible with is Dell. But that's neither here nor there.

Dell should design, manufacture and market a left-handed keyboard for its customers. It would be far from the most difficult technical challenge Dell has met to switch some keys from the right to the left side of a keyboard.

I promise you, there is a market for this device. At the very least it would make me one very happy Dell comsumer. 3 Comments »

Make all parts optional

Sales Strategies submitted by yank 05/20/07

Plenty of people spend a LOT of time shopping around on Dell's site for a great deal. They trust the brand and haven't the time or interest to build there own PC so when they see a good deal they try and buy that new Dell PC with as few options as they can manage.
Let them!
Allow them to remove:
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Hard Drive
Video Card
Etc.
Keep just the minimum basics and allow them to pick and choose what they want! 12 Comments »

TECH SUPPORT ON NEW ORDERS?

Service and Support submitted by cpcguy 05/20/07

I've twice priced out a new laptop only to stop at the point where I must select the amount I want to pay for tech support for it. I've owned two dell desktops and I'd like a laptop upgrade but I just can't see having to pay for tech support. 3 Comments »

No TPM Chips at all \trusted computing

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by sonicsteve 05/20/07

The idea is simple, trusted computing is an initiative started Microsoft, HP,IBM, Sun and others that has too much potential for abuse by these powerful companies. While a user control over ride would be OK I believe that having NO TPM chip (on any device, sound board, video, drives etc...) would be better still.

It is more than possible that a computer that has the user over ride engaged to enable it to run software that is "not trusted" could be blocked from important web sites or from engaging in other critical activities. In this scenario it would be virtually useless to run software that is not trusted.

Premier Account "My Systems" List(s)

Dell Web Site, Service and Support, Simplify IT submitted by jorge 05/20/07

Systems which are own by an Account and were on the account prior to the new upgrade of the Premier Account website should still be listed. Old Serial Numbers are listed in Red (as in information not available) yet Downloads & Drivers are still available for these systems, so Dell still supports the systems but not are no longer listed in the customers personal list.

The old system serial numbers need to stay in the customers list as they were prior to the upgrade so the customer can properly maintain these systems. There is now a 5 year limit on systems being listed on a customers list yet Dell is still supporting (providing downloads and drivers) past these 5 years, so removing those systems from the customers list is not correct. Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Remove metallic Windows sticker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)

Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers). 23 Comments »

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Could Dell Own Green?

Environment submitted by adrian 02/01/07 **REVIEWED**

Environmental concern and sustainability are today real issues with consumers and voters in many of Dell's markets. It looks as if a genuine commitment to reducing carbon and cleaning up their footprint will become a more important factor for companies wanting to strengthen consumer loyalty in the coming years.

Dell has already made its environmental commitment clear. My suggestion is that this could become a hallmark of the company - why not make the products, literally, green? If Apple can own 'pretty' and IBM/Lenovo can own 'serious', why can't Dell own 'green'?
Dell continues to do a lot to support our environment like our Plant a Tree for Me program and other activities documented on our Environment blog on Direct2Dell. Click here for more details.

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

The Clutter Is Forming: We Need A Moderator

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by googideas 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Approximately 48 hours into its life, and Ideastorm is filling up with repetition and senseless comments. Since moderation cannot be exercised by the participants a moderator a la Dell Employee must put up her hand. Or his hand. We aren't picky!

One: Repeating the same ideas from earlier posts is a pain to the reader and a waste of space and time. These should be removed.

Two: Suggestions which are without applicability to the issues at hand should be removed: one post states that "Dell should set up Dell Pay to compete with Paypal." Sigh. Why?

For what unique purpose? Dell's business is not online payments, in the same way Apple's is not selling music (they sell music at a loss to sell iPods at a gain). There is no benefit to Dell and it meets no need.

Since this format is experimental and fully funded by Dell, I encourage Dell to cut the wheat from the chafe and remove as much as they see fit. For all of the "I have rights" and "freedom of speech" advocates, you don't. This is a place where the good keep going and the bad go out.

The less posts the better. It provides Dell what they want: the opportunity to test strong ideas properly. Without the removal of clutter, the good ideas will by dint of the time they are posted (e.g. 3am) and the increasing volume of posts, inevitably suffer at times the forest's size despite the grandeur of the tree in question.

I may be going against the grain of popular opinion, but you add your vote to this post if you believe in the goal of this site, and not the freedom it offers to utter the first inane thing which comes to mind.

Website Dedicated to Linux Support for all Dell Model Computers

Dell Web Site, Linux, Service and Support submitted by jthurst 02/19/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

A website that dedicated to Linux On Dell. Recommendations for xorg.conf file configurations and power management configuration/drivers. It would be great if Dell would dedicate some resources to Linux Support on Dell. When I think of what laptop to buy I think about which Vendor is the most Linux friendly or else what Makes and Model's seem to be working out best for Linux users. Dell laptops seem to have a lot of new powerful hardware that's tough getting Linux to work well on it. For example, the drivers/modules for getting the power management features to work and the Alps/Synaptic drivers and configuration tools is also tricky. The X-windows monitor and graphics card detection and auto-configuration doesn't work well on many Dell Models. Dell has an opportunity to do a lot for the Linux community and in turn the Linux community could do a lot for Dell. I used to have a Dell D600 and now have a Dell 620 and I'm always spending weeks trying to get everything to work properly.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.
