Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ergo 05/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell has now decided to sell computers with Linux pre-installed. GREAT MOVE! But for the moment, it only concerns the US... Here outside the US, we can't wait to buy a pre-installed Linux Dell PC! Please sell Linux PCs worldwide!

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Cedega as System Configuration Option on All Dell Ubuntu Computers

Linux, Sales Strategies, Software submitted by acelin Apr 13

Would it not be awesome if Dell Ubuntu purchasers had the option to buy Cedega? Windows users have the option to buy cool software! I understand that Open Software people ( I am one myself) do not like paying for software, but this piece of software works great, and would not be hard to implement. 5 Comments »

Unlock Sound Card Features on Inspiron Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by tigerforce Apr 13

The sound card on the Dell E1705 (and probably most recent Inspiron laptop can support all of these features http://www.sigmatel.com/products/pcaudio/notebook/stac9200.aspx but they have all been locked out of the software driver that Dell gives us customers. Additionally their are no ASIO drivers available from Dell and I really need this for my recording projects. Having the other features like setting both my audio jacks to outputs, manually setting sample rates and latency, and virtual surround sound would be soooooo Cool!
Now before you start calling Dell names, let me defend them by saying that they probably thought that your Mom might accidentally wreck her laptop after she messed up her audio settings and then blame Dell. But...
at least put the download on http://www.support.dell.com so all the audiophiles out their can get what we payed for. Dell, you don't have to
make anything new just unlock what already there. Please :) Oh and if you want more info check here (though i don't necessarily recommend this approach) http://www.notebookforums.com/thread169312.html

4GB RAM and E8000 series processors on XPS One

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage, XPS products submitted by wallyhorse Apr 14

Got a look at the XPS one over the weekend, and especially now for the first time that I can remember it offering at least the E6550 processor I would be looking at. But the big drawback is you can only take it right now with 2GB of RAM. With that in mind, I would look for that machine at making the following additional options:

1. Having XPS Ones with at least 4GB or RAM (or more if possible) as an option. This would appeal to those who want more than 2GB of RAM.

2. Offer the newer E8000 series processors in the XPS one. Not only do those apparently use less power, but they also have a 6MB Cache/1333 FSB as opposed to 4MB/1333 FSB for the E6550 or 2MB/800 FSB for the E4500.

These two changes would make the XPS One much more appealing in my opinion. 4 Comments »

64bit Drivers for Vostro Desktops

Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by dguillaume Apr 14

Why are there no 64bit drivers for the Vostro 400? I ordered it with 4GB of RAM but it can't see it all as it comes pre-installed with 32bit Vista, I have tried upgrading to 64bit but Dell don't provide any drivers. 2 Comments »

One PC with many "bodies"

New Product Ideas, Simplify IT submitted by gbfabiani Apr 8

I would be very pleased to have one disk ( or SSD) to move from my laptop to my home pc or from my laptop to a mini-laptop when I travel .

This way user will have always the same computer with him ( operating system, programs, data, configurations) , one only PC to care configuration and updating about , but many "pc bodies" depending on where he likes to use the pc .

It is not a shortcut to avoid to pay more than one OS licence , it will be fine to pay one licence each "body" pc used even it will not be possible a contemporary use of all pc's bodies, but I feel it will be terrific not to have anymore 3 different environments and to miss always sometyng every time on each separate machine. 39 Comments »

Innovation MUST be OPEN - Dell needs to support this!

Dell, Environment, Education submitted by phubert Apr 9

As this article reveals, all TRUE innovation for the future MUST be open.

Save the planet? Open!
Education? Open!
Resolve world conflict? Open!
FIX government IT? Open!

How Open Source (Ideas) Can Win the War and Save the Auto Industry

"The great products of the future are going to be built on platforms for innovation. Products with broad appeal developed by one company behind closed doors are going to be the exception not the norm. Open products will thrive on open ideas developed transparently and without pride in individual ownership." ****

Useful USB Ports

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by jshereshewsky Apr 9

I have a number of devices connected to my desktop via USB cords; web cam, mike, back-up discs, PDA, printer(s), etc. etc. Although my current DELL desktop has two USB ports on the front, most are from the rear, which is an area that is difficult to access. Can't you build a desktop machine with an expandable number of USB ports (powered) that connect from the front of the machine? 7 Comments »

Windows Product Key Tags

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by jkuper Apr 9

Dell needs to bring back the laminated Windows Product Key Tags. They've gone away from them and it's not working out at all. We have a a number of Optiplex 745 pc's at the office with the new non laminated style that are already starting to lose their product key stickers after just 6 months. The old laminated style was much much better. Thank you. 1 Comment »
