Dell Modular Computer

Desktops, Environment submitted by reg 04/25/07 **NOT NOW**

It would be great for Dell to make a 'Blade' Type MidTower computer - slotted cartridges for the CPU, Graphic Card, Hard Drive, DVD Burner, 2CD Burner Drive.

All modules slotted - the buyer just picks and chooses what they want : 1 CPU with 1 Nvidia card, 3 Hard drives, and 2 DVD burners. A micro tower should hold 4 slots, a mid-tower size should hold 7 slots, a full tower 12 slotted modules.

Truly custom config your machine - easy assembly, slot, locking lever action - just like the Blade servers and RAID hard drives. Tired of a puny 2.0 GHz dual core? Unlatch and remove the CPU/RAM module - insert your new 3.0 GHz Quad Core with 4 GB RAM module. Keep all your data/software/hard drive/CD Drive in place.

Easy repair, easy upgrades, easy maintenance. Dell should do this: Modular computing. The time is now.

I think they used to call this a 'passive back plane' system - all cartridge modules connect to a high speed bus - so a cartridge would hold a 'motherboard' module (cpu + RAM). The hard drive would be a module, the video card - a module, the DVD drive - another module. Interchangeable parts make easy to configure, easy to upgrade systems.

Environmentally supportive idea too - less waste, less land fill. 21 Comments »

Pre-Install Bonzi Buddy on all new systems!

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by captainsensible 04/25/07

It's not about what the user wants, it's about profit! If you don't upgrade Bonzi within 30 days he gets really sad and begs you hourly for money. And each feature costs an additional fee, and if you don't get it, Bonzi starts to get angry and delete your emails and randomly disconnects you from the internet! But the profits would be amazing.

PS2 Support

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by cornettt 04/25/07

I know I am not the only one to run into this problem. Dell needs to make PS2 support standard on all desktop computers. Every new computer we have ordered comes with only USB ports and no PS2 ports.

Since most wireless keyboard/mouse sets, Microsoft's & Logitech's included, come with the keyboard connector in PS2 only they don't work without trying to find an adapter online. Until wireless keyboard/mouse makers do away with PS2 connectors Dell should keep the ports as standard on their computers. 28 Comments »

La Mort of Dell's Axim X51v

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by cisco.kid 04/25/07

I wish to add another voice to the support for continuing the Dell Axim X51v (as a PDA or Smartphone). Because of the productivity and usefulness of the Axim, I passed on the Axim X50v I owned to my son after I purchased the X51v. I had hoped to continue this 'hand-me-down' process as a newer version was developed. But alas, there will be none.

It was disappointing to hear that the Axim would be no longer available.

Farewell to a great product. 2 Comments »

Now You Choose – Concept 1

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Choose” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Put the computer in a different room from the monitor/keyboard.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jmxz 04/25/07

If there are any cables that'll carry video across a house (and no doubt there are - cable TV is a proof by existence) I'd rather just ran that cable from the garage where I'd have an (ideally rack mountable) computer & dsl modem, etc.

It'd be even better if it didn't need a cable - I'm not sure if any of the powerline networking solutions would do it - the HomePlug alliance has decent industry support (Intel, LG, GE, Linksys, Sharp, etc) - and HomePlug AV talks about sending video through powerlines. http://www.homeplug.org/home< advantages would be:
* I stop caring how loud the fans & disk drives & graphics card are.
* I stop caring how the machine heats up the room.
* I don't need massive power strips for all the plugs.
* I get the space back in this room.

Note that this is different from a thin client - because thin clients are subject to the poor video performance of whatever card they put in the thin client. I still want the massive loud video card - just move it to the garage and stream the video to the monitor on my desk. 4 Comments »

Bigger keyboard on big notebooks!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by szaboze 04/18/07

On DELL's high performance bigger notebooks and smaller modells have equal keyboard. And the keyboard's bezel is very big on a big modell. Please make alternate bigger keyboard with new design for bigger modells (when maybe, with numeric keyboard). 2 Comments »

Design & Form Factor

Desktops and Laptops submitted by logi 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

This forum is a great idea to get Dell back to #1.

What I like to see is new and innovative styling across the board on notebooks and desktops. Dell's product line looks 5yrs old and needs a total refresh.

As you can see Apple Inc. is winning conumers hearts because Apple owners are actually proud of displaying them in the living rooms instead of hiding them. Get rid of that XPS desktop design that thing is so ugly.. and come up with something consumers would be proud of displying in their media rooms.

Also I would like to see Dell create a sleak new design for a media center box so we can utilize vista home for the entertainment room and display it next to my audio and video units.

Thanks for listening Mr. Dell.
