Build and Advertise Printers that don't lie, cheat, and steal.

Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Printers and Ink submitted by jmxz 12/24/07

Inkjet printers have earned a well deserved horrible reputation as "filthy, lying thieves". Quoting that article "Printers routinely report that they are low on ink even when they aren't, and in some cases there are still hundreds of pages worth of ink left." I have the best printer from that study - which still wastes "only" 9 percent of ink - and has the annoyance that it'll even refuse to print "black and white only" when one of the color cartridge's is dry.

Printers also have earned the well-deserved horrible reputation as devices that are"Spying On You". Advertise which of your printers spy on customers and make at least some models that don't.

One of Dell's competitors is currently getting lots of bad press over their $8000-per-gallon printer ink. This means the timing could be perfect for Dell to challenge them in the Printer market.

This is an *excellent* opportunity for Dell to fight back with "The Honest Printer". Make a printer that

  • Doesn't lie about being out of ink when it's not.
  • Has reasonably priced ink - even if the printer may cost more.
  • Encourages rather than discourages environmentally friendly refills
  • Doesn't spy on you.

It'll build up Dell as a Brand That Can Be Trusted - something that's been sorely lacking for quite some time 2 Comments »

Allow anyone to get any PC in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site.

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice 12/18/07

Look at the Dell Home and Home Office page for the XPS M1710 and the XPS M1730 http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb_gaming?c=us&cs=19&l=.... I can get the XPS M1710 in the Home and Home Office channel of the Dell site.

But look at this Dell Small Business page (which is for all XPS notebooks that are offered in that channel) http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb?. The XPS M1710 is nowhere to be found in the Small Business channel! But why?

It is like saying that home users want the XPS M1710, but nobody in a small business would want it. But some people in small businesses do. For some people in small businesses, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all PCs actually.

For example, suppose that a home user like the designs of the Vostros and wants to buy a number of them. But they are not offered in the Home and Home Office channel, so he needs to go to the Small or Large Business channel to buy them.

Or suppose that a business user wants certain XPS systems that are offered only in the home channel, so he has to go there to buy them.

In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who get into such problems.

An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all PCs in all of your channels. 2 Comments »

Dell: start telling us DETAILS of how you plan to regain CUSTOMER LOYALTY

Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by phubert 09/13/07

Surely you know participants here at IdeaStorm are frustrated with Dell.

We have lost considerable confidence in this entire PROCESS.

Furthermore, we see stories being posted, and know of others where customers have been treated badly, off-handedly.

A number of us believe useful and worthwhile suggestions here have been COMPLETELY ignored or certainly given no acknowledgment whatsoever.

Yes, IDEASTORM SEEMED like a wonderful initiative to us. But, its bright and hopeful prospect for any meaningful CHANGE at Dell seems to have been VERY seriously tarnished.

What's up?

If you PLAN to gain customer loyalty, can you give us SOME CLUE as to (1) its PRIORITY at DELL and (2) your implementation of a PLAN???

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Honor The Reward Certificates

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by consumer 05/16/07

Recently I ordered several items from Dell.com using some reward certificate. The total of my order was $0.00 due to the value of the reward certificate. After I entered the credit card information, I received the email confirming my order with cost of the item in black font and rebate amount in red color font. But the total of the invoice did not subtract the rebate amount. When I called the customer service in Philippines. The woman understood the situation but said that I would have to talk to her manager. The manager was also a woman but could hardly speak and understand English. She started reading some legal documents. I asked her if I could talk to someone who spoke English and could understand the problem she said that she could not. After that I have called several times without any relief. Finally, I have called the credit card company and hoping that they would do something about it. I am afraid I may have to deal with call centers overses with the credit card company. It is becoming hopeless. Comment »

Sales Opportunity/Issues

Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by dwaynemowers 05/17/07

There are many clients that call into the TBU Storage queue in OKC and state that their Sales person is ineffective or non-responsive to their requests. In this vein I believe there maybe sales opportunities that are bing missed or lost due to poor folow up or communication. My IDEA is that the TBU Storage group (and other groups) have a specific queue or individual we can call that can handle these requests and questions, not to get the information and forward it along but to actually take the order, provide quotes and follow up on current quotes/sales. I think this would be an excellent opportunity to provide enterprise class customer service and well as an increase to sales in Enterprise Storage. Projector built into Notebook Idea

Laptops submitted by illini7833 02/22/07

I have an idea of having a projector built into your laptop. Think there is a real market for this feature on Dell's Latitude line of notebooks. Focus would be on the Latitude line to target people who work for companies. Would make hunting for projectors a thing of the past. Envisioning a projector built into the chassis. Thoughts? 14 Comments »

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments »

Don't make us buy Vista

Operating Systems submitted by icantseeyou 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

From all of the press I have read it is plain that Vista is a big bomb. To buy the cheapest version I hear it isn't even as good as XP SP2. At the same time you need at least 4 Gig to run it. Offer other options... I don't care if it's Linux, XP, or a rat running on a wheel. Don't make us buy Vista.

You can read more about this the OS options Dell offers here.

Remove metallic Windows sticker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)

Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers). 23 Comments »
