Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Ubuntu Dell Repo

Linux, Service and Support submitted by tekhawk 07/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 734 Comments »

Introduce discount coupons for all markets worldwide

Advertising and Marketing, Inspiron products, Sales Strategies submitted by virtuoso 06/30/07

As much as i am delighted to see that the prices of dell products in India are quite similar to those in countries like USA and Canada , providing special coupon codes which are valid only in these countries is something i consider to be very unfair to customers in india and other markets without such coupons. It is very disheartening to see that there are such good discount coupons (like the recent $350 off on the latest inspirons) which are available to only selected markets and this may prove to be a decisive factor in a customer's decision to go with a competing brand.

I commend Dell for acting on the suggestions given by consumers and wish this practice continues. I sincerely hope that this request will be considered and acted upon as soon as possible. Comment »

Put the American flag on all Dell's sold in the USA

Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by tleavit 06/25/07

I thought up this one from another post. Sure Dell builds PC's in different locations in the world (laptops and such from Mylasia) but Dell should take pride in the fact that it is an American company. Sure you have some support in Canada and India. I can forgive you for that since the dollars are rooted in the USA. It is *very* rare these days to actually see products like Dell be shipped from the USA the different countries in an age that just about nothing ships out of the USA and everything is shipped in. Its good to have Dell battle this huge and ridiculous trade deficit that we have going on with the rest of the world (especially China). Good job Dell, slap a USA flag on your box's sold to people in the USA. In a time where you are a rarity in the computer industry, even IBM sold to China. Be proud. 7 Comments »

Linux Laptops with the Cost-Effective AMD Processors

Linux, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by lamar_air 06/18/07

Linux supporters are often attracted to linux OS distros for a number of reasons but some of the more popular are its open source licensing agreement, stability, and cost. There is also often a focus on supporting a company who is not a market dominator and growing support towards the rivalries. For the hardware side of your linux laptop the AMD processor can often offer the same performances as the Dell dominating Intel but at a lower cost.

An Ubuntu-AMD laptop could be a popular request.

Dell Linux Developer Community

Dell Web Site, Linux, Software submitted by lamar_air 06/18/07

A place where Dell can look for community involvement on Open Source projects.
Any software Dell-Linux offers should be open source, non-proprietary, and be available for community development just like the rest of the Linux World!

Options Available in USA Should be Available Everywhere

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by icediver 07/10/07

I live in Canada and was under the impression that Dell offered the "No OS" option on all systems. I tried to order an Inspiron 1521 with no OS and was told I couldn't. An e-mail exchange with Dell customer service revealed that the option was only available for all systems in the USA. In Canada, and I assume in other countries as well, it is only an option for selected systems.

There is no logical reason for this type of regional discrimination. Dell should make all options that are available on a system available in all countries, not just the USA. 6 Comments »

Penguin Key

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by lamar_air 06/18/07

Linux users would like to throw out the Bill Gates MS Windows Key and replace it with a key of a Penguin wearing a Tuxedo.

Is it getting cold in here Bill... I thought I saw a Penguin!

WUXGA screen and Linux for Inspiron 1520

Inspiron products, Linux, Monitors and Displays submitted by claudio_ch 07/08/07

OK, this is a very selfish idea, But this is just the notebook I would buy immediately to replace my current Inspiron. Oh and I live in Switzerland, so please don't make it an USA offer only.

Thank you.

PS: Why does your spell checker suggest me to replace Inspiron by conspiracy ? :-) 4 Comments »

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.
