Ethical Business T&Cs

Dell submitted by morganjbryan Jul 24

Dell should adhere to the same Distance Selling Legislation for business business customers as those offered to consumers (i.e. 7 day cooling off period).

I am not sure why businesses should be treated any different from consumers in this respect. This legislation was devised to protect a buyer where they cannot see, feel or trail goods physically, otherwise they are at the mercy of the online business.

Be ethical and clear in your T&Cs and inform customers of this during your phone interaction. This would (and will) dissuade me from making a purchase with Dell until changed.

The T&Cs for the IdeaStorm state "Be honest and ethical". Maybe a bit of 'do as you would be done by'? Comment »

XPS 630 Processor Options

XPS products submitted by bayarea2 Jul 25

Please consider an XPS 630 option to upgrade to the Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9650. The QX6850 is old technology. You offer the option on the XPS 420. Why not offer the same on the XPS 630?

Please look at this suggestion seriously. Comment »

ELectronic calendar

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by tawbb1 Jul 24

This is not exactly a computer idea, but sort of something new. I would like to be able to buy an electronic calendar for my sister, but I don't know if they are made. Not one for the computer, a calendar that is separate from the computer that she can hang on her wall and that will remind her say an hour ahead of time of appointments she has by voice. Basically one that says, "you have an appointment in one hour". I don't know if anyone even makes such a thing, but I think it would be cool for her to have it since she has 4 kids and has a hard time remembering appointments. Maybe other people could use it too. 2 Comments »

Supercomputing in a pda

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by zakkieda Jul 21

At dell home, create a giant supercomputer with hundreds of processors, with hundreds of gigabytes of ram, and terabytes of hard drive space, and hundreds of graphics cards. You sell a PDA with an excellent modem which can receive signals from miles away, by sending information like a phone. Your PDA has a minimal processor, only enough to give out coordinates of the mouse click and the letters pressed on the keyboard, the signal is given to your processor which you bought online on the PDA. Then a signal is sent back to the PDA- the picture. Essentially, you are taking a wireless mouse, keyboard, and monitor, strapping them together, and controlling your supercomputer from miles away through a phone service. On your PDA you can buy or sell online processors, ram, and hard drive space, so if you wanted to play crysis on its maximum settings on your PDA, you can rent an excellent processor from dell. If you need more ram, just rent or buy it from dell on your PDA. With a minimal processor on your PDA, you have plenty of room for a touch screen, a better battery, and a better modem for internet connection. 4 Comments »

Good ideas get lost in the mad rush:

Environment, IdeaStorm submitted by robertandy1980 Jul 19

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10088348/Use_Electronic_Paper_Screen_fo...

See this is such a good business idea from a user marvin from India. And this idea is not visible to the dell community just because there is so much crowd talkin about many things.... The development out of this idea could reduce cutting of trees, agony to human eyes, longevity to laptop users, light-weightness and so many good things to dell both on business n environment front...

I guess this community needs to devise a better way of handlin mad rush...:( 1 Comment »

Use Electronic Paper Screen for Day-Light Users users

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Printers and Ink submitted by marvindanig May 2

Its very difficult to read the laptop screen in open daylight under the Sun. Especially, in a developing country like India, where people have to run and meet clients under the sun n do all reading while finding a suitable angle to turn the screen on... its annoying to adjust angles to connect optically with the text literally and the eyes get strained ultimately.

Using a layer of electronic paper screen (I know of company named e-ink.com which makes electronic papers) will help users like me to use the laptop more ergonomically. Not only that the electronic screen would consume power at 1/3rd the rate of an LCD or LED would ... Giving me more action time between two charges for the lappy....!

A paper screen can be read under the sun and requires alternative lighting for the night use (just like paperback books). It will suit a very large category of eye-conscious customers and give opportuniy to design another awesome category of LAPTOPS. 9 Comments »

De-segregate Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by penguinsa Jul 4

In my searches of laptops, under "Home & Home Office", I couldn't find any 15.4 inch WUXGA (1920x1200) machines. I foolishly concluded they didn't exist-

BUT THEY DO. They're segregated under "Small Business" but they exist- The Latitude D830, The Vostro 1510...

WHY? If I'm looking for a 15.4" laptop, why is a WUXGA "good enough" for Small Business, but "not good enough" for home users?
When I do a search on 15.4" screens- one of YOUR default Web searches- why are the Business machines excluded?

Are the Home Users simply expected to "Get to the back of the bus" ? How do you justify the segregatiion ? 11 Comments »

When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jul 3

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 23 Comments »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Something to think about 103 Comments »

Goodbye Dell, you'll be missed...

Desktops and Laptops submitted by okroger104 Jul 14

Recently bought an HP HDX 9000 and a Pavillion TX2500 tablet.

Why?

Styling, function, and price was just right.

What did I have to compare the HP's to before buying?

Nothing.

And that sums up the usefulness of this website. I can see why HP rocketed to #1 past Dell in such a short time.

As a long time customer of Dell and one who still uses their products that I purchased a while ago, it's somewhat sad to see Dell no longer on the cutting edge.

These HP machines are well designed with excellent build quality. Their customer service so far has been above and beyond. (Sure, maybe I'm just lucky.)

So have fun folks. Fight the good fight. Hopefully in the future I can return to being a Dell customer.

And so you may ask, what is the idea in this post? if it's not self-evident, then you need to get out more and see the rest of the computing world. 25 Comments »

Live Boot

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by jprin3 Jul 14

I thought of this when i Dual-Booted my laptop, what if you could switch from Ubuntu to Vista in 1 click, and in under 1 second? I had a load of viruses on my laptop and had lost the recovery cd so I installed ubuntu and sorted windows out, but the annoying thing now is that i have a load of files that can only be read in ubuntu that i need in vista and vice-versa. This would be very helpful for peope who want to get the most out of each OS, eg. Games on windows, iPhone SDK on Mac Leopard, and the brilliant built-in security and open-sourceness of Ubuntu. 3 Comments »

Vertical Laptop Cradle/Docking Station

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thebittersea Jul 2

When I want to use my external monitor, keyboard and mouse my docked laptop gets into the way.

Often time, I need to push it out of the way. It would be really cool if we can vertically dock our laptop like a book on a bookshelf to save some table space.

something like this, but for laptops.

Modular laptop screens: keep your good high-res screen!

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

A problem with laptops:
When you buy a new laptop, you have to buy a new screen. If you want higher resolution (e.g. you're a programmer or an artist), you might have to pay $400-500 for a screen

BUT

When you buy a new laptop you'll throw that screen away! That's a big waste.

Solution:
Make changing screens as easy as changing hard drives in laptops. Don't force that person to throw it away when buying a new computer! Let the person transfer it to their new laptop.

Nice things that go along with this:
- Want higher than average resolution on a Latitude XT tablet? Then pop in a UXGA/QXGA screen from a third-party manufacturer or from your old Dell computer! (there are some forums dedicated to modding laptops, but this may invalidate one's warranty)
- Did your display die? Tech-savvy users can feel more at ease by just ordering a replacement screen from Dell. This lessens the strain on Dell customer service and repair. Comment »
