Now You Choose – Concept 1

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Choose” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Better Windows Vista Drivers for existing hardware

Operating Systems submitted by hoopsomuah 04/26/07

Despite what people who hate Microsoft say Windows Vista is actually a pretty good operating system. There are several improvements that are offered over Windows XP.

Unfortunately having bad drivers for it can result in a very bad user experience. Slow Startup and Shutdown are often attributed to bad drivers. Bad Network drivers can really ruin the wireless networking experience.

Having better drivers would really improve the Vista customer experience. Please don't solve the driver problem by releasing new hardware that is works great with Vista. fixing drivers for existing users is a great way to reward loyal customers. 1 Comment »

More education about Vista

Operating Systems submitted by hoopsomuah 04/26/07

I don't think I've seen an opinion on Vista anywhere from Dell. How well does Vista perform on the machine I'm thinking of buying? Can I trust the Vista Experience Index score? I expect Dell to be an advocate for the customer here.

It's nice that Dell is listening to the voice of the customer and bringing back XP but I don't believe that Vista is snake oil. I believe that there are advantages to getting Vista with a new PC (assuming the right drivers are available). I'd like to learn more about those advantages form the Dell perspective.

I'm editing this to address some comments:
I realise that Vista is not for everyone. Windows is not for everyone (although Microsoft would like it to be) and that's why I think Dell should provide alternatives like Linux.

However for those of us that actually want some of the features in Vista, It seems like it's in Dell's best interest to help me find the right Machine. If they don't I'll end up returning the machine and while that costs me a bit, it also costs Dell quite a bit. So don't let me buy a machine with Vista if Vista won't run well on the machine. Also, If there is hardware in a machine that I can only take full advantage of by running Vista, please let me know that. (Of course if you lie about that the court of public opinion will find you out eventualy and I think I'd have a pretty decent legal case)

Knowledge is good even when coming from a source that you don't trust it's more information that you didn't have before. 6 Comments »

Inexpensive tape backup solution

Desktops, Small Business submitted by philgar 04/26/07

Burning data to DVD/CD is great, but I wouldn't call it adequate for long term storage/backup. Optical media just isn't that reliable long term.

An internal tape drive for the home/small business desktop with a user friendly backup utility would be great. $100-150 seems like a reasonable price range. 4 Comments »

Built in mic and speacker for notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by gt_ng 04/26/07

It would be a good idea for Dell notebooks (especially Inspiron) to come up with built-in mic and speakers, at least for ease of use for audio conferenece elsewhere, rather to bring along headsets and mic. 3 Comments »

Dell should hire Leo Laporte , and create a show similar to the old techtv show the screen savers.

Advertising and Marketing submitted by jakerivers 04/26/07

Dell should hire Leo Laporte , and create a show similar to the old techtv show the screen savers. It would be really cool. In fact Dell could have its own set of shows, if it teamed up with youtube, or just ran them off their own webpage. I fondly recall seeing all the latest FreeBSD. innovations on Techtv.

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Driver Access on Support.Dell.com

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by tripmeist 04/27/07

Dell has recently made changes to their Drivers and Downloads page on Support.Dell.com. The changes are actually very confusing for the average end-user. The problem is two-fold: (1) When we enter our Service Tag #, we get a list of ALL drivers that seem to be available for this system, RATHER THAN the drivers that are associated with the specific configuration as the system shipped, and (2) There is nothing on the site that allows the end-user to perform driver installs on the system after an OS Reinstall, in the proper order that will specifically avoid problems afterward.

I suggest the following resolution to deal with both of those scenerios. It is simple, and practical.

(1) Break the drivers as listed on the site into two categories ... (A) Drivers Associated with Your Shipped Configuration, and (B) Additional Drivers for Compatable Components. List all drivers, utilities and updates associated with the shipped HW and SW configuration under Group A, and list all other drivers, utilities and updates for Compatable Components under Group B. This would be consistant with the methodology found on the Drivers and Utilities CD, where all applicable components are listed under "My System" with a check mark.

(2) Dell techs are instructed to advise customers that their drivers need to be installed in a specific order for the OS Reinstall to work properly. At the top of the "Drivers and Downloads" page associated with a specific Service Tag #, Dell should list the specific order of the respective Driver Install, with instructions as to what one can expect during the process. This component of the web page would obviously be different for Desktops and Portables.

This will work toward the ultimate objective of the computer owner actually being able to take ownership of his or her own computer. Your Tech Reps are constantly pointing Dell Customers to this site, but when we get here ... pages like the one I've referenced are confusing and lead us to call back in. Not only does this have a negative impact on the Customer Experience, but it also has a detrimental influence on Dell's overall efficiency with respect to handling the call flow into Tech Support. I suspect ... these suggestions could cut your return calls by 10%, possibly more, since a good portion of your resolutions are to perfrom an OS Reinstall. 2 Comments »

Virtualization: PC Virtual 2007/VMware for Home, Office and Games

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by oagostinho 04/27/07

Nowdays, virtualization is a very important field. In that way, I think that Dell have to be think about it seriously because with this I'll have much return of the computer that just buy. Maybe, can you help me to choose what kind of operating system for the computer I want to be installed and configured in function of my needs: at home, at office, etc. See ya! make it possible to buy a machine with ONLY the OS and drivers installed with none of those garbage "trail softwares"

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dontlunch 04/27/07

Please stop including so many peices of "trial software" in new machines. I didn't ask for any of that stuff, and I don't want any of that stuff.

When I buy a computer with vista or XP that is ALL I want. I don't want a thirty-day version of AOL, or a bunch of stupid cheap games or 30-days of macafee or 30 days of MS office or any of all that other garbage that is always installed. Its a real hassel to either figure out how to uninstall everything, or reinstall the OS from scratch. i shouldn't have to do that, I shouldn't be forced to get software I don't want.

You could have an option to purchase a machine with ONLY the OS and your hardware drivers installed and nothing else. (I'd be willing to pay an extra 5 or 10 bucks to be saved the hassel of trying to clean all that garbage software off of a brand new machine, and that would help offset the loss of the money all those companies pay you to install thier garbage on all your machines) 11 Comments »

Give customers the _option_ of even more trialware.

Software submitted by jmxz 04/27/07

Currently Dell has to walk a delicate balance between getting paid to include trialware on computers and offending customers who aren't comfortable uninstalling the trialware. However some customers have no problem with the trialware and appreciate it - either because they're interested in the software or appreciate that this software subsidized their hardware.

I could think of many reasons why more trialware might be appreciated.

  • To those people unfamiliar with Windows software, Trialware's appreciated because it's probably the best way to learn what potentially interesting software might be out there.
  • Give me trials of TurboTax (http://web.intuit.com/about_intuit/press_releases/2001/02-08.html) That was the last program I can think of that made me go borrow someone's Windows PC; and pretty much the only thing that makes me think I should have an up-to-date windows box around.
  • Give me a 1-month trial of WoW, Everquest, EVE, or whatever the hot games are these days. I never got into gaming; but perhaps a trial could get me hooked.
  • Give me even more ISP trials - with a dozen 1-month ISP trials I get a year of free internet.
  • Give me all of Symantec and McAfee and Norton - I'm unfamiliar with windows software and trying them both might be the best way for me to choose which one I like better.
I'm not that familiar with Windows software - but no doubt there's plenty of other commercial software that I wouldn't be willing to pay for without trying it first. Those vendors would probably pay to be bundled on a Dell. And if this makes for a cheaper machine I'm all for it.

So this Idea is for Dell to have an additional option that reads
<input>: Install trial versions of 150 other software titles [save $10]
Those that want to learn about a wider variety of software available for Windows, and those looking to save $10 can choose it. Others don't have to. 3 Comments »

Works under xyz Linux

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by paladin 04/27/07

Test you existing laptops, desktops, servers. If everything, and I mean everything, runs in any particular distribution of Linux, say so. Put it on the unit, on the box, in advertising. Like this:

Supported under Ubuntu Linux 7.04
Supported under openSUSE 10.3

Even if that unit works with only one distribution, at least people would know this and it wouldn't take long to check (as compared with engineering new desktops designed to work with particular distributions). 13 Comments »

Take Preorders of Linux Notebooks - Make us Linux users vote with our $.

Linux, Laptops submitted by jmxz 04/27/07

Make us Linux advocates vote with our dollars.

Take PreOrders for Linux Notebooks - with a discount large enough to be a fair exchange for you taking the pre-order - and tell us that you'll ship them as soon as $X of orders are in.

The Latitude D620 with Ubuntu is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a laptop; so if that were available and if you could give us the timeframe you'd expect it to be available - for the right discount I'd place a preorder even before you made them available.

That might be a better way of estimating demand than IdeaStorm comments; and might give you a head start against other OEMs also evaluating Linux laptops. 5 Comments »
