The Ultra Portable PC & The Near Frictionless All-Terrain Conveyor

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by foxconnians4life 05/13/07

Dear Mr. Dell,

In order to pursue fulltime production of prototypes, I would need to work closely with two local current Dell suppliers: Austin Foam Plastics and Hardigg Case Center. Their precision monitoring test equipment includes:
• Lansmont Shock Tester
• Unholtz Dickey Vibration Table
• Lansmont Drop Tester

The groundwork that you've laid out for me in the form of special recognition at PN1 has gone a long way in paving the way for success through the trust and confidence of the other employees.

Establishing relationships with specialty manufacturers and suppliers will require frequent trips to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio over the course of the next couple of months. The innovative resilient composite materials for both the ultra portable pc and the conveyor are for all practical purposes identical, and I hope that you will agree that we should attack both simultaneously. I can assure you that I would not be proposing these steps if I weren't CERTAIN that these designs can be produced locally and in-house at surprising speed and low labor and material costs. I never proceed until unlimited sourcing and efficient manufacturing and assembly procedures are ensured.

There are currently no U.S. design or utility patent infrigment concerns; and may I suggest that our interests are best served by simply maintaining the "trade secrets" until such time that an unveiling is imminent. I've been advised many times over the years that these designs should not be described in a patent application until the method of manufacuring and/or the "free axle" conveyor principle are discovered or disclosed.

The need is at critical mass. Within weeks I will be able to present firm quotes and production projections on every aspect, unless of course you really would like to see the 30 foot long flames on the fiery chariot. On land, the vehicle will out perform anything conceived to date and be the first to transverse the surface of water without drag. The promised astonishment of the World will harken the way for the fulfillment of the covenant. No point in human history has been more poignant than this.

I would like to be granted permission and access to find Dell employess on my own who are involved in configuration, compatibility and R & D. I've already choosen four basement level non-technical employees as the first of the testing team to begin work immediately on the many ergonomic adaptations of the ultra portable. These men and women are contageous in their spirit and enthusiasm. I would like to involve Richard G. Bingham, an independent programmer here in Austin to finalize our collaboration on cloning and hotswapping harddrives. Between 1990 and 1994 Richard also wrote programs to control and syncronize the power transitors of one propulsion system, though I haven't contacted him since.

I've exhausted my resources and I do need a Dell laptop, yet I'm paralized today by the prospect that finally... the time has come to make it happen. Having never sought or accepted money for this, I know without a shadow of a doubt that you are the right man and Dell, Inc. is the right place. I've already told family and co-workers that because you liked some of my ideas, I had a chance to work on "Michael Dell's Design Online" -- and so I'd like to stick with that throughout the duration -- and not reveal with too much passion for the time being who I know to be our ultimate source.

Money, money, money. By man's invention again, it is what makes the world go 'round.

All that happened from Friday to Friday was real but caused from a dimension beyond our comprehesion. The prophecy of revelation will be soon realized, but as you might have glimpsed, in a much more benevolent manner than some believe; and with a much better outcome. Wars become mere theatrics. I knew within minutes of reading your writings that you are the 'brain' and I am the monkey. Ideas about some anti-christ? -- I have no idea. The "SHOW" business I mentioned Friday is to position you and Dell, Inc. as the Technological Conquering Savior. It is unimportant to whom the multitudes flock. The whole of Africa will have a young Ethiopian, the muslims - a young Turk. Dar of Dell is our Christian equivalent of Mahatma Gandhi. When you hear him read his writings, you will know that you have never met a soul so pure. The power comes in on computer somehow and the truth will not make its way onto the TV. We must document this greatest story 2.0 with the concealled cameras in our work, travels and experiences in order to show this and future generations that what appears to be coincidence is of a force far greater than ourselves.

The computer and the conveyor create an almost instant oasis, far from the invention of pavement, for life to continue to flourish as Planned.

Sell the XPS and Vostro lines at Staples too...not only Inspiron

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by winoffice 12/04/07

I know that Dell began to offer computers for display and sales at Staples recently - GREAT MOVE! But unfortnately, this concerns only Inspiron...I cannot wait to try out some XPS computers at Staples and order them there!

I went to the Staples Web site (http://www.staples.com), clicked at the "Computers and PDAs" link and ended up at http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?&secondlevel..., clicked at the "Dell Computers" link and ended up at http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?&secondlevel....

I was disappointed on discovering that only Inspirons were offered - is it so hard to sell the higher-end XPS and Vostro lines at Staples? Please sell the XPS and Vostro lines as well! XPS systems that I would want to see in Staples stores and on the Staples Web site include but are not limited to the following.

- XPS M1330 notebook
- XPS M1710 notebook
- XPS M1730 notebook
- XPS One desktop (all-in-one)
- XPS 420 mini tower desktop
- XPS 630 mini tower desktop
- XPS 720 tower desktop

Vostro systems that I would want to see in Staples stores and on the Staples Web site include but are not limited to the following.

- Vostro 1400 notebook
- Vostro 1500 notebook
- Vostro 1700 notebook
- Vostro 200 slim tower
- Vostro 200 mini tower
- Vostro 400 mini tower

Also consider the OS on most computers in Staples stores - Windows Vista Home Premium or Basic. However, it would certainly be ironic if Vostro and XPS (which has the most features compared the Inspirons) computers came with Windows Vista Home instead of Ultimate (which has more features than any other Windows Vista edition). Besides, the XPS and Vostro systems that I tried out at Dell Direct Store kiosks had Windows Vista Ultimate, and the offerings at Staples should at least be the same but certainly not less. So please Dell, make the XPS and Vostro systems that will be offered in Staples stores and on the Staples Web site come with Windows Vista Ultimate, not Home Premium/Basic. 13 Comments »

Dell is in a dire need of a COMPLETE image refresh

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by mentalman1369 08/15/07

Dell is in a dire need of a COMPLETE image refresh.
Dell needs to completely change the way the general public view their products and services (the only way Dell can repair the damage it has taken to its customer base).
Current opinion of computer users, from casual users to enthusiasts, regard many Dell products (notebooks especially) as ugly, cumbersome beasts. Many users find the sole reason they but a Dell is for its low prices and value. But even this reason is fading, as price-drops from competitors force buyers to consider other brands and deter users from Dell's sometimes truly ugly designs. Modern consumers now pursue sleek and elegant designs in almost everything they buy, and this applies to computers. Dell must re-innovate and redesign their computers to rouse the attention of ALL computer users (the new Inspirons look a little better due to their colour, but their fundamental design is still cumbersome and "brick"-like). This way, customers will choose Dell products to others because of its desirable looks AS WELL AS its low prices and understated customer service. Dell has the ability to engineer amazing products which have great functionality and practicality, but if the presentation of these products is not up to scratch, people will dismiss what lies within.
The XPS M1330 is a great first step (including adding small extra touches such as the remote, fingerprint reader, touch controls and WLED screen), and Dell MUST continue this trend of designing objects of pure desire if they wish to become market dominant (and even adding more, like backlit keyboards, adaptive display brightness, etc.). Dell cannot seem to be lagging behind other companies in product aesthetics (adding different colours to laptops simply ISN'T enough to attract the attention Dell needs and deserves), for this is what general consumers see representing company. Dell needs to start imitating other companies who are promoting their products by making everything to do with their company and products attractive (though using spin doctors similar to those employed by HP (who create laughable and senseless adverts) is NOT recommend). However, it is important that new computer designs DO NOT compromise on functionality or integrity of the product (e.g. cases should be strong but still attractive (problems like the M1330 paint debacle must first be overcome, of course)).
It is imperative that Dell improves on the way they project themselves to the general public (a good recent example is Jeff Clarke's outfit while unveilling Dell's new amazingly thin Latitude tablet (a professional business unit): that outfit really isn't great for Dell's general image (even if the video won't be view by the general public, and no personal offense intended, Mr. Clarke)). Dell should unify the image of its products and services, designing sleek and elegant computer cases, advertising its excellent customer service and promote itself in a more prominent way, such as opening more Dell Kiosks, a new logo and the like.

Dell, it's time for action! 13 Comments »

Line-in for the notebook screen

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by ikea 08/25/07

My Inspiron 1721 has a Full-HD screen but I only use it for notes during studies. At home it only stands there with that nice screen.
Give me a way to use the laptop full-HD screen as a secondary with my monster PC. 6 Comments »

Stop moving *Backwards* in your Linux progress - return the NVidia graphics option.

Inspiron products, Linux, Laptops submitted by jmxz 08/16/07

During the first 2 days of your Ubuntu sales you didn't offer any accelerated graphics options on Ubuntu laptops. After numerous Ideas requesting the addition, and phone calls to your sales guys as well (I know I made at least one) the option was added and I even posted an idea thanking you for having the option on the day I ordered one.

Now I see that you again removed the option of accelerated graphics on Ubuntu systems?!?

WHY? It works fine on the E1505N you sent me!

What's with the horrible history of backwards progress on your Linux systems.? You showed backward progress on the warranties (and then fixed them again). You showed backward progress on the pricing and discounts (and then fixed them again; and then undid the fixes again).

It seems that just as fast as you mark Ideas "Completed" you go around un-completing them.

You're making me believe the conspiracy theories that were originally made in jest about people in Dell trying to make the Linux projects fail. 10 Comments »

Fix CPU Whine On Intel Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by codemonkeyx 08/08/07

This issue has been ignored by Dell, and other manufactures for far too long. I was hoping the issue had been addressed with the new M1330 laptop I just bought, but it has not.

When the CPU enters low power mode it makes a whining sound all the time. It's quite bad, and has been reported all over the web by thousands of users.

Dell needs to sit down with Intel, and figure out what is going on and stop ignoring the problem. 80 Comments »

better video card for the rumored XPS M1530

Gaming, XPS products submitted by nicolas.velasquez 10/10/07

I've seen the rumored specs of the new XPS M1530 coming on November 7. This laptop is aimed partially/mostly people that works with 3d, video or gamers. If the specs are as follows:
# 15.40-inch display (CCFL up to 1680 x 1050, LED up to 1440 x 900)
# Core 2 Duo options from 1.5GHz (T5250) up to 2.6GHz (T7800)
# Crestline GM/PM 965 chipset with up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
# GeForce 8400M or 8600M GS options (up to 256MB)
# Slot-loading Blu-ray / 8x DVD±RW
# Options for 802.11a/b/g/n, WWAN, Bluetooth
# HDMI, VGA, 1394, ExpressCard, (3) USB 2.0, Ethernet, fingerprint reader, media reader
# 2.0 megapixel (with CCFL) or 300k (with LED) cameras
# Weight supposedly 4 pounds to start

I think that, even optional, the video card MUST be a:
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB GDDR3
If not, it will be just an Inspiron 1520 with HDMI and fingerprint reader in a different case. 5 Comments »

HDMI, HDMI, by God almighty, HDMI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by benjesuit 09/25/07

HP has had it on their notebooks for 1 year now. Come on Dell! What's it going to take to put in an HDMI port? Most of the new LCD TV's today input HDMI.

And I'm surprised that the new XPS 1730 has no HDMI port. DVI is so yesterday and is not forward thinking at all.

Your next generation Montevina based models MUST have HDMI.

And yes, this is a dupe. A dupe of my own post even. But I want to buy a Dell. But without HDMI, it makes it difficult. 30 Comments »

A REAL 15" XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, XPS products submitted by soslowxps 11/27/07

All I have to say about the "New" XPS M1530 is that it is severely disappointing. It is basically a 1520 in a supersized 1330 chassis.

With the launch of the 8800M and several companies announcing 15" laptops based around the 8800M GTX I expected a strong showing from Dell.

I want a 15" laptop with some teeth to replace my well aged Inpiron 9300.

The XPS M1530's teeth are as sharp as my grandma's when she takes her dentures out.

I don't want a Integrated webcam.
I don't want a Biometric scanner.
I'll NEVER use either of them.
I understand some people might, hence the reason for options.

I thought XPS meant power, and gaming, not a 6 month late release.
The reason I say 6 month late is because it is so simlilar to the 1520.

It has a higher resolution screen.
The SAME video card, memory option.
Comparable Processors.
None of the "extras" I don't want.
Looks are subjective, I like them both.

If the M1530 can bearly compete with it's "Little Brother" How do they expect it to compete with the REAL gaming 15" laptops coming.

I hope Dell updates the M1530 with even the lower end 8800M as an option, otherwise it'll get crushed performace wise with it's lowly 8600GT. 12 Comments »

Raise your hand if you're tired of negative Vista articles

Operating Systems submitted by matthew2142 11/28/07

Neowin member ispamforfood (interesting nickname!) has posted an interesting question on our Back Page News forum asking "Raise your hand if you're tired of negative Vista articles".

It is true that there are many news outlets that are having quite a bit of a lark bashing Microsofts latest offering, hardly surprising based on the real-world problems that many people suffered after upgrading their Windows XP machines. In defence of Microsoft, the recommended machine to use Vista with has increased quite a bit from Windows XP where 256MB of Ram was quite enough (or 512 for optimal performance) and now the recommended is 1gig or 2 depending on who you believe. Personally, I had 1GB in my machine when I upgraded (clean installed) but I only saw an improvement after I added an extra 1GB, bringing my RAM up to 2GB.

It's probably also fair to mention that Microsoft has since released Performance & Stability updates, which do fix a lot of annoyances such as slow copy/paste (calculation time) to other partitions. Anyway I have also done a poll, so voice your opinion by voting Yay or Nay to negativity on Vista by clicking the Member Poll link

Put ports for eternal wifi antennas.

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by traker1001 11/28/07

I would love to be able to plug in some Hi gain antennas to my laptop without removing the bottom cover for my laptop.

Ideally all your laptops would have 3 external jacks that we could plug in 3 Hi Gain Wifi antennas and get the full 11n draft glory, But really I would be happy with this in any combination at the moment. 7 Comments »

XPS gaming desktops should use standard power plug

XPS products submitted by spacegy4 11/29/07

I have heard people gripe about the nonstandard power plug that is used on the higher end of the XPS high performance desktops. If they switched to using a power supply with a standard power plug they could reduce the risk of people not being able to use their computer if they lost the plug. 5 Comments »

Multi-OS selection via checkboxes

submitted by xivulon 11/29/07

What about having a checkbox for each operating system in order to allow users to select multiple choices? No checkbox = no OS, multiple checkboxes = Multiboot. The conflict resolution dialog notifes about conflicts between OS and other hardware choices.

Select My Operating Systems:
[ _ ] Free DOS (info) [$0]
[ x ] Ubuntu 7.10 (info) [$0]
[ _ ] Windows XP (info) [add $50]
[ x ] Windows Vista Basic (info) [add $50]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Home Premium (info) [add $100]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Ultimate (info) [$150]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Business (info) [$100]

Ubuntu, XP and all other operating systems should be made available on all machines unless there is a fundamental hardware issue that makes a particular OS unsuitable (an issue that cannot be resolved by selecting a different component). Each item should have an info button which opens a brief explanation, a fair comparison table of all operating systems should also be provided. Details such as bootloader choice in multiboot configuration and disk allocation algorithm are left to Dell engineers to have fun with.

Hopefully that will accomodate most requests relating to OS choice while keeping the interface simple and intuitive. 28 Comments »

Help me consolidate my customer numbers on Dell.com.

Dell Web Site submitted by cosmichellion 11/29/07

I've made many purchases through dell and I have many customer numbers. It's nice that there is a feature that shows all the customer numbers and orders I've placed under Home, Home Office, SMB etc.

However, I keep wondering why the feature doesn't allow you to add customer numbers from certain other segments. When I wanted to add my new customer number and order for a recent purchase, I was given the following message...

"Only Home & Home Office, Small Business, Dell Refurbished and Dell Outlet customer numbers can be added using this feature. This customer number has not been added to your account."

If this feature doesn't do it, is there another I'm missing?

My newest purchase probably shows up under hi-ed or an EPP. It doesn't really matter, I just want to be able to keep track of all my orders in one place regardless of the segment. Can you make this happen? Comment »
