The Dell website is so boring

Dell Web Site submitted by badblood 07/11/07

The Dell Website is among the most boring on the web today. I suppose it's efficient, clean, doesn't use too much bandwith, etc, etc, etc,, but god it's boring. Sometimes I go there to buy computers but just fall asleep mid way through, head on keyboard, snoring away.....I am bored just writing about it..... Take the configurator thing...god it's boring. Not only is it boring but it's annoying as you are pushed to buy stuff you don't want or need.

If you really want us to go through all of these aggravating steps before doling out the cash, to, at long last, actually purchase the beastie, please make it just a little bit more entertaining.

The Mini website has a fine take on configuring a machine.

Simplify, Simplify!!

Sales Strategies, Simplify IT submitted by beefman 02/23/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Purchasing from Dell at present is immensely confusing. From home buyers to corporate purchases, simply purchasing a computer is a struggle when one is trying to achieve the best value. In the drive to serve every segment of the market, Dell has become balkanized and fragmented.

Dell made their name on ease of transaction and simplicity. Now, Dell's pricing structure is so complex it makes airline fares look simple! Then, when it comes time to order, finding the right person to speak to can be a chore as well. I have been able to make much better deals when talking to a sales rep than when ordering online. Why? Dell should be driving customers to the lowest cost method of order acceptance and making that process as easy and painless as possible.

The multilayered, multitiered pricing structure has to be the first thing to go. Get rid of the thousands of discount codes that are handed out on a by the minute basis. Make pricing simple, repeatable and logical. Discount by customer on an account basis. Why should you be extending discounts and rewarding a bottom-feeder who only waits for below-cost red-ink loss leaders and never buys otherwise? Reward good customers, and set pricing such that even without a discount, Dell products are an excellent value. All the segmentation DOES NOT result in better service to customers and only adds cost.

On that note: DON'T hand off accounts. My biggest frustration with Dell was building a relationship and then being handed off to someone else to work with. It seemed that this was done on a regular basis to stimulate business. Not smart. I have had the same rep at CDW for 8 years. They're my primary vendor and I won't go anywhere else. If they sold Dell, I'd buy it there. Why? My sales rep and the quality of service.

You NEVER want customers having buyers remorse or thinking they could've got a better deal. The sales/pricing structure in place pretty much assures that, in addition to making the purchase process more difficult than it should be. Sweep it away, get back to roots of offering rock solid leading edge technology at a rock bottom price.

We’re making every effort to simplify the purchase process for Dell products and services. The recent launch of Dell ProSupport was driven by feedback from customers like you, and it’s an important step in the right direction.

Stop changing the support website

Dell Web Site submitted by flasheypants 06/13/07

It seems that every 3 - 4 weeks I goto the support website to grab a driver download link for a customer and there is somethign different about the site, in terms of located the download.

Honestly....3 revisions ago, the site was perfect. Then without warning it changed. After a week of using it, we all got used to it, then once again it changed. It is now in the most cubersom form ever.

Its like a small child with a paint set. Eventually you have to take the paint away, otherwise that child is just going to make a big old mess. 1 Comment »

Business Support - Premier Account ID

Service and Support, Simplify IT submitted by janmetdepet 02/21/07

Every time I call Business Support I have to spell my name, email, address... Result: emails are often not delivered to me. If my Premier account would have an ID, it would be possible for Business Support to get my credentials automatically. This saves me and Dell a lot of time! And it is correct every time! 1 Comment »

Knowledge Base

Service and Support submitted by cajunspike 04/09/07

I'm sure all the problems that are called into Dell are stored in some type of database. Instead of having to call Dell every time you have a problem, make the problem resolution database web enabled. Customers could do a search for whatever error message or problem they have and possibly find a resolution on their own without having to play phone tag. If something like this already exists, then make it more publicly known. 2 Comments »

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments »

Remove stubid welcome text.

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by smarsen Mar 8

The first thing a costumer reads when entering Dell's opensource pages is:

The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Windows® operating system. If you’re here by mistake and you are looking for a Dell PC with Windows, please use the following link.

Remove this stupid text. It sound like something is missing on a computer without commercial software. The main thing is that you get a freely available OS with free worldwide support (community) and loads of free software installable simply also for dummies. 12 Comments »

No Extra Software Option

Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

Check out jeremy_f's update on our current software options.
