Let Vista owners trade OS's with XP owners who want to swap. Dell Community, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 04/26/07
IdeaStorm has a number of people voting for giving more people upgrades from XP to Vista Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP. Offer A Free Downgrade From Vista To XP Operating Systems submitted by huper 04/24/07
I for one have had it with Windows Vista. I find this software so full of bugs that I am spending more time transferring log files to Microsoft than getting actual work done. They are certainly not paying me for my time to repair their flaky software! When I got my Dimension E520 it came loaded with a 2.8Ghz Duo Dual Core Intel Processor, 2GB of RAM, 256MB on an NVIDIA card & 2 - 250GB hard drives. Surely this system would be powerful & I could focus on writing & getting work done quickly. But no, the slow speed of this operating system taxes the hard drives & CPU so they are regularly running at 75% & 89%. I have tried changing the swap file to use a different drive, removed non essential services as well as swapping out memory from one slot to another. I have used every OS both client & server since DOS 1.0 & this is by far the worst! (Except maybe BOB or ME). Dell wants to give users an upgrade to Windows Vista within a certain time frame. How about offering a downgrade to XP for people who don't want Vista? Otherwise I will be checking into which Linux version will best run on this hardware. When looking for certain top-end features users cannot downgrade the base level system to something with less memory, slower CPU's, smaller drives, etc. Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 06/23/07
The UK Microsoft Partner Programme website team has a great Windows Licensing FAQ - perhaps Dell should answer these questions on their website too. Comment » Downgrade option while keeping vista license code Operating Systems submitted by vnakoy 04/23/07 I understand the discount and the push Microsoft must have put on Dell towords Vista, but Dell should push back. The licence code that comes with vista, microsoft should allow downgrade to windows xp. We all realize eventually Vista problems will be fixed, but until then give people the option to downgrade for free. Then when Vista is more supported, they can upgrade or dual boot. This will save Dells face and will give users the option to use what they want, while preparing for the future. Dell could also offer dual boot installed, so that the less knowledgable users won't need assistance setting up there system. If this comes into play, please make it retroactive for all currently frustrated users. 3 Comments » Support Microsoft's new streamlined process from Downgrading/Upgrading from Vista to XP. 1. Better communicate to your customers the "Downgrade" (arguably "upgrade" is a better term from the customer's perspective, since it gives the customer what they want instead of something they don't) Rights that Microsoft describes here: An OEM may facilitate the end user’s downgrade rights from Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate to a qualified version of Windows XP Professional (noted below) on the new computer system.2. Use the new simplified downgrade process that Microsoft's enabling to make it quicker and easier to do http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=543 Under the current rules, OEMs must call about and file for each and every machine the license keys required to downgrade from Vista to XP. But Microsoft is planning to move to a new policy which will allow its top 170 OEM partners to submit these keys online for groups of machines, which will save them time and reduce complexity, Ball said. For more: http://it.slashdot.org/it/07/06/29/1657256.shtml< Dell is in Microsoft's top 170 OEMs; so should be able to take advantage of this new simplified program. Since the process is less labor intensive, it should be less costly too. I hope Dell passes down these savings to it's customers. 2 Comments » Vista downgrade to XP Professional Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by carlobaluta 04/10/07
Hi, Batteries should not stick out the front of a laptop Laptop Power submitted by chipzero Apr 13
A number of Dell laptops come with 9-cell batteries that stick out the front, which looks weird and - in my opinion - quite ugly. 64bit Drivers for Vostro Desktops Desktops, Operating Systems submitted by dguillaume Apr 14 Why are there no 64bit drivers for the Vostro 400? I ordered it with 4GB of RAM but it can't see it all as it comes pre-installed with 32bit Vista, I have tried upgrading to 64bit but Dell don't provide any drivers. 3 Comments » Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
More Customization Options for XPS Sysytems Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by bundy88 Apr 8
I have been a Dell customer for about eight year's now and have recently visited their website to possibly purchase an XPS 630, me being a game enthusiast and all. It looked like a well put together system and I know Dell build's very good computer's haveing owned a Demension 4600 for seven year's with little to no problems. Upon checking out the customization options for the system I realized they were lacking certain item's that would appeal to gamer's such as a motherboard selection, cpu fans and heatsinks, power supplies, more processor selections like the new q9300 quad, and other name brand memory like Corsair xms2, and Muskin xp2 extrme then just Dominator as the only memory with a heatsink. Also Nvidia has there new 9 series of video cards out on the market, I don't know why Dell wouldn't be offering them instead of the soon to be outdated 8 series. Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14 Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments » Reward most popular ideas put into action IdeaStorm submitted by j.bandringa 04/21/07
Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has. Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500". Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!! Give a choice of either Ati or Nvidia gpu's Gaming, Desktops and Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 23 Everyone is a fanboy to one particular brand and prefers their products, so why do some desktops and a lot of laptops only have one option. There should be at least one Ati card and one Nvidia card available for each machine so people dont have to go for the brand they dont want. Its only fair... 6 Comments » Lower Prices of Batteries, especially Replacements Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by gear Apr 18
I realize there is a temporary battery shortage that is driving up prices and also the high cost associated with getting bad batteries that have to be recalled. Desktops and Laptops submitted by retro Apr 21 Give us all full control of our hardware, I hate entering a bios and seeing only the most basic settings and not much of them, I may get some faster ram and want to set the cas or i may want to adjust my hard drive settings. 10 Comments » Unlock Sound Card Features on Inspiron Laptops Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by tigerforce Apr 13
The sound card on the Dell E1705 (and probably most recent Inspiron laptop can support all of these features http://www.sigmatel.com/products/pcaudio/notebook/stac9200.aspx but they have all been locked out of the software driver that Dell gives us customers. Additionally their are no ASIO drivers available from Dell and I really need this for my recording projects. Having the other features like setting both my audio jacks to outputs, manually setting sample rates and latency, and virtual surround sound would be soooooo Cool! track my votes
