Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores
Linux submitted by dpic

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores?

User selects which OS(Linux or Windows) to boot into on all new Dells
Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by shannon_vanwagner

Imagine the headline.."With Dell you get a choice in what OS you can boot into when your computer starts up!" OR "Experience the best of all worlds Windows/Linux with your dual-boot Dell!!"
Dell could be the only company (at least initially) that sells all computers with the capability to select which OS (Linux or Windows) to use after the computer boots up. The computer can be configured to dual-boot Linux or Windows at the factory.
This would give both new users and experienced users the awesome capability to choose which Operating System they want to use every time they boot up their computer!! It's very important that common people get a choice when it comes to which OS they get to use - it's the future of computing!
Technology and Innovation is so important these days and so by offering this feature I think this would help to make Dell the market leader in innovation.
Here's how it might work: The computer boots up and gives the user a choice with a snazzy, easy to use menu to select whether to enter Windows or to enter Linux (the Linux could eventually even be a few different distros so there would be even more choice!).
The user would then select which OS they want to use for that session, select it and then boot into it. Eventually Dell could then add the functionality for the two operating systems to share(or at least have access to) a part of the filesystem so the user's files could be accessed from whichever OS the user is currently booted into.
There would also be a simple recovery DVD and/or partition that could put the machine back to its original state if the user were to mess anything up.
Think about it, this would give users ULTIMATE POWER and more importantly A CHOICE!!! DELL CAN BREAK THE MONOPOLY AND SET THE NEW STANDARD!
Be INNOVATIVE, Think CHOICE!!
Can't wait to see it!!
DELL ROCKS!

Goal: Dell FREEDOM Box - A Fully Open System for Home Users by 2010
Dell, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dpic
11/29/07
Set a goal of having at least one fully open system for home users by the end of 2010! This would be Dell's greatest endeavor yet!
The Dell FREEDOM Box | From the software, all the way down to the hardware, a completely open system
Software: * A fully open source operating system with no restricted software like Gobuntu.
Hardware: * All hardware must follow these rules-- 1. The interface to the hardware must be explicitly made public, so the hardware can be used freely. 2. The design of the hardware must be made public, so that others can implement it and learn from it. 3. The tools used to create the design should be free, so that others can develop and improve the design.
This movement is already making headway and progress will continue to increase. Dell is already getting involved--
It has been stated that Dell has a goal to have open Linux drivers for all Dell products. Dell, keep the pressure on your vendors to open up!
Support OpenBIOS and Open Firmware! "Among its features, Open Firmware provides an instruction set independent device interface. This can be used to boot the operating system from expansion cards without native initialization code.
It is Open Firmware's goal to work on all common platforms, like x86, AMD64, PowerPC, ARM and Mips. With its flexible and modular design, Open Firmware targets servers, workstations and embedded systems, where a sane and unified firmware is a crucial design goal and reduces porting efforts noticeably." - http://www.openbios.org/
Already, there is huge support for replacing proprietary BIOS - http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62549/LinuxBIOS_instead_of_proprietary_... - http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/74358/Dell_Support_Open_BIOSes_for_Linux And there is the Open Graphics Project - http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/72320/Help_The_Open_Graphics_Project<
This project would put Dell at the heart of the movement bringing Freedom, Reliability, and Innovation to the world of technology! Does one really need to ask why this would be better than proprietary technology?

At other sites, I have seen comments by individuals who have BOUGHT Dell Ubuntu systems complaining about the difficulty FINDING said systems.
I think you'll get more sales if you improve the visibility!

Distribute Ubuntu Cds
Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by badblood

Believe it or not I need a copy of Ubuntu that I can buy or pick up free in a computer shop.
Why?
Because my internet connection is bad and I just simply can't download Ubuntu and all the driver updates and what not. And I am not alone. About the fastest internet connection you can get in Africa is ADSL running at 4megps, through an unreliable phone line that times out every two seconds. I think Australia isn't much better. What's more there are limits on how much you can download before your account gets suspended or you need to pay more.
Ubuntu needs distribution support, as do all open source offerings. Don't assume we all have lightening fast connections.
Dell distribute Ubuntu CDs.
And anyone reading this who owns a computer shop, you should distribute Linux CDs too!!
Thanks - I really hate my internet connection, truly!

Admit it - you were wrong....Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Ten years ago this month, Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.
How the winds of success are fleeting.
Admit it - You were wrong.

Easier way to OPT OUT of Dell selling my private information
Advertising and Marketing submitted by ninefoot3
10/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I rec'd a brochure yesterday saying Dell and DFS were going to share my private info with other 3rd party companies for marketing purposes. Well, it said that in about 5,000 words or so. At the end is a box stating that I may opt-out of this by calling the number listed or writing a letter (including certain info) and send it to the listed address.
I chose to use the phone method. After being shoved around to a few people, I finally got someone who could help me 'opt-out'. This involved 'opening a case' as if I had a technical issue with my account.
My IdeaStorm suggestion, hey Dell, make it easier for us to OPT-OUT of your attempts to make money off of my personal information. What's the matter? Didn't make enough money off of my patronage to Dell products and the interest rates charged? Getting an extra $1 for my name, address and age information going to help Michael Dell get a new boat? C'mon!
While I'm disturbed that Dell wanted to sell me out, I'm more disturbed that Dell made it difficult for us to opt-out. A simple URL would have been nice. I know, that would make more people opt-out and Dell would have less names to sell. It's like a mail-in-rebate or the lack of a cancel button in the account information at freecreditreport.com, you HAVE to call, and since that's a pain in the neck, most people will sloth themselves into something they don't really want.

Use LINUX compatible hardware
Linux submitted by coiledwire

I think ...we were dreaming...Linux is not mature enough OS yet ...but then again it will never be if PC manufacturer never support it.."chicken or egg situation"
HOW about at least selling LINUX compatible hardware (wireless card, graphic card is pure pain right now)
The main reason USERs turning back to Window is "hard to find Hardware" that work with linux.
This will FORCE hardware companies to release Linux drivers.

Pre-install gNewSense on laptops and desktops
Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by libervisco
02/21/07
gNewSense, from http://gnewsense.org/ , is a pure 100% Free Software Ubuntu based GNU/Linux distribution sponsored by the Free Software Foundation, an organization which started the Free Software movement from which the latter Open Source Initiative sprung up. It is the organization behind the GNU General Public License.
gNewSense is special in that it does not contain any code under proprietary licenses at all, and is yet quite usable even for the average user. This means that it is easy to guarantee that all software within gNewSense is completely legally distributable.
The idea is to offer a line of laptops and desktop PCs whose hardware perfectly fits what this GNU/Linux distribution supports (and it doesn't support only a few hardware devices, notably some wifi chips and some Nvidia and ATI cards). It should be quite possible to build a system that doesn't contain any such unsupported parts.
The benefits of doing this is offering a choice for those who wish to have a completely legally free operating system working out of the box on Dell computers. There is a great number of people within the Free Software community who would appreciate having such a choice and would buy it for themselves and recommend it to their relatives and friends.
It would also certainly attract attention of the Free Software Foundation which would publicly commend Dell for offering this choice, which is very good for bettering Dell's reputation within the whole of Free Software and Open Source movements.
If Dell decides to do this, they should brand these boxes by the correct terminology, calling the operating system they are offering as "GNU/Linux" because the GNU Project, sponsored by the Free Software Foundation, started what we today know as GNU/Linux, a popular free operating system that rivals Microsoft Windows. Many of the core and essential components of the OS come from the GNU project.

Media Center Edition
Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by usacomputertec

Yes Ubuntu has it when it comes to MCE just go to linuxMCE.com and check it out. The video demonstration says it all. For Dell to pass up this free software would be a grave mistake. Of course the hardware support would need to be helped and 64 bit support is a must I don't know if they offer a 64 bit version of LINUX MCE. Linux MCE is installed on top of Ubuntu and can be the primary default start up option or regular Ubuntu can but for a media center it would turn any PC into an XBOX on steroids, injected with Nitro, and supped up with Linux.
Personaly for me to switch from SUSE and FEDORA to UBUNTU would require that I could compile programs with make and gcc and all those fine things we find in SUSE and FEDORA if Dell wants to create another LINDOWS or Linspire then they can go somewhere else because the Linux community WILL NOT support a commercial effort. All efforts must be free and open source. Also Dell needs to sponsor the Tux500.com race car. It would bring them lots of business!
If anyone needs support with open suse they can just go to www.mindblowingidea.com and click Self Help. Of course you can also use the IRC chat built in to open suse to ask questions.

When we mean Linux, we mean Open Source

It is great to see Dell listen to customers and it is quite interesting to see the amount of votes for Linux systems. On the other hand the idea of using SuSe Linux defeats the principles of open source and hurts the community given recent developments. Suse is becoming another version of Microsoft software and this is not what I am looking for in Linux. I would rather see Ubuntu or Fedora/Red Hat chosen as a result.
