Dell you want to Simplify IT? Well here is the list.

Simplify IT by:
1. Allow corporations to purchase Systems with No-OS, most if not all corporations have their own standardized installers due to their custom configurations/requirements (hence the plethora of No-OS ideas). 2. Integrate corporate wide standardized OpenSource/Freeware applications such as Firefox, OpenOffice, 7-Zip, PDFCreator, Foxit (PDF Reader), SumatraPDF, IrfanView, SpyBot Search & Destory, Ad-Aware, etc. for non-Fortune 500 companies on a tight budget, if not Small Business. 3. Provide an avenue to OS's which are not prone to self destruct or become Virus/Worm havens such as the Microsoft Windows type do. In other words fully support and provide Linux to your customers which will help reduce the dreaded re-install Windows support scenario. 4. Provide (at an extra charge) remote install of the default OS to your corporate clients and small business, you want to be green and simplify IT, do both by not shipping CD's and manuals and allow your paying customers to remotely install through a Dell re-install server at regional locations to reduce network delays. 5. Ship pre-installed OS's without the dreaded bloatware all IT must remove the moment they turn the computer on before a user actually uses it. This is one main reason for IT requesting No-OS to be offered to reduce the headaches of having to remove the pre-installed bloatware! I bet none of the bloatware is pre-installed on the Dell employee computers! Your IT would quit if you allowed it. 6. Provide a built in hardware diagnostic solution/tool to allow IT to quickly verify if hardware is operating correctly! This is one time consumer for IT, determining if the hardware is failing, well mainly due to OS's which don't support by default hardware awareness (as in hard drive S.M.A.R.T. detection and other built in hardware failure indicators), your pre-installed OS's should have these detection software built in! A customer could then detect hardware failures at an earlier state, instead of when its dead for most cases. 7. Offer all parts as optional! Care to guess how many Dell desktop power cables I have? Can I get a refund for them? Thank goodness laptops don't ship with telephone cable by default anymore. 8. Create an IT support line, IT knows whats wrong 90% of the time they don't need to go through the support script for the Nth time, if I re-iterate the script before the support person does on the phone, can I get a discount?

Unintelligible system summary details on the support page
Simplify IT submitted by fahlenkp

I can't count the number of times I have hoped to have the system summary help me out after entering a service tag. I should be able to go look for details that help me. The hard drive brand and model, the webcam, whatever. Sometimes you can find information based on the part number and some searching. The ideal solution would be to have HUMAN READABLE details in the field describing the part number. I'll paste an example of what is listed at the end of this post.
You guys have amazing database systems. Why not show them off? Give me details of my system with a part number, a replacement name that makes sense and a link to purchase the old part or a new upgrade? Why not post a link to not only the newest driver but the oldest driver and firmware as well? All of this data should be a few clicks away, not a maze where normal users give up.

Improve Dell's support center

I'm happy with my new Dell Vostro but was very disappointed when I upgraded the Dell Support Center that claimed it was better integrated to improve support. I then went to see if there were new drivers and updates for the computer.
To my dismay, the site has tons of upgrades and all are much older than what my laptop currently has. There's no indication that reveals that, my windows system caught on to me installing an older driver though.
If you really want to make support easier and integrating it with the hardware, then make sure the software know what's already on and show only the things you need (with an option to see older drivers not on by default). Also upgrade the sites drivers faster. How is it my laptop has all its components nwered than what's on the site? That shouldn't be.

Dell: The Dell Browser Computer
New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge

Dell! Create the first Dell Browser Computer!
Yes you read it right, I'll repeat it for those who have a tough time, Dell Browser Computer!
The computer will not have an OS or at least not an OS in the true sense of the word, yes it needs an underlying support system to prop up the Browser (using as many neutral words here to not lean on any side of the fence). Dell will construct this system to boot up and pop up a browser to interact with the computer world as seen by this computer. All interactions will be done solely through the browser, from surfing the net to accessing files which of course have to be browser compatible through addon's and special "Dell" provided services to process these files correctly.
So what do you do with this computer, well pretty much everything you do today but through the browser. Any service such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file management, calculator will all be accessible via the browser, yet I know I didn't mention every possible app in the planet but this is an example so if your app isn't listed fill it in here ______. Dell will provide the services to these applications so Dell will get the customers's service from day one! New Browser App, well its accessible through the Dell service, lost the computer well don't worry your files are on the Dell storage server, just power up, update the computer go get your files as you had been doing previous to the crash, death of the other Browser computer. Yes all interaction with the Dell services will be Secure using the latest in Cryptography to satisfy even the CIA director and of course in regulation with the NSA (making sure to cover for any people who don't trust this) of course for out of the US sales those countries will have to set their requirements.
All in all its a win-win for both the Dell Customer and Dell, customers always get latest and greatest app and Dell reaps the rewards of supplying the service (and monthly service charge, wink wink).
Yes I probably left out a few wrinkles and intracaties but hey thats what the discussion to follow is for, right.

"Skip" XPS 730 and go right to XPS 740

As Dell may/may not already know, the recent Skulltrail motherboard has recently launched. Suffice to say, being the amazing product that it currently is, it's also capable of equipping 2 quadcore processors.
As a gamer, the overall concept of having an 8-core system is rather exciting. [although some could argue that even quad-core processors aren't currently built around and/or for certain hardwares and softwares]
One could further take the Skulltrail XPS 740 and embedd it with tri-SLI, "3 videocards", and use 2GB RAM sticks. Give us gamers the option to have 8GB or even 16GB of RAM.
Furthermore, we should be given the option of having more hard drives.Preferably within the 4-6 range [during customization] One might choose one gaming hardrive with 10,000rpms, and then two large data hardrives, however, options should be further given.
As Dell may also know, Alienware recently had a curved 44'' inch monitor at the CES 2008. The size aside, what's more important, is that it contains a .2ms response rate, which is impressive by far. I'm a current user of Dell's 24'' monitor, however, in the event that I'd ever decide to upgrade to your 30'' monitor, it's still within the 5-6ms reponse time.
Dell should upgrade into the High Definition era. Provide us with killer XPS systems, and amazing HD monitors. As with those blu-ray drives, watching movies could be "that" much better. With 1080p and a 16:9 aspect ratio on a 30'' widescreen, a gamer could have the edge, and catch his "enemies" sneaking up beside/behind him.

Upgradable graphics in the m1530!!! (no more soldered cards)
Gaming, XPS products submitted by theideasman

Im sick of my laptop graphics getting old and then finding that i need to buy an all new system. Cant the xps come with modular cards (mxm) that can be upgraded direct from dell if the consumer requests a graphics upgrade. Of course there will be a cost involved but surely it will be better than having to buy an entire new system!

Take the whole anti-vista resistance thing and exploit it
Linux, Operating Systems submitted by lee_stricklin

Windows Vista is arguably (meaning there are people that dispute this) the WORST operating system since Millenium Edition. So keep loading all of the computers with XP until M$ doesn't allow the company to do so and after that start advertising Ubuntu 7.10 systems that are preloaded with lots of good freeware on them and maybe some non-freeware as well. This is a list of software that could be loaded along with the stuff that's included with Ubuntu. I think this would make Linux machines look just as good as (if not better) than Windows:
Default desktop environment: Gnome (included with Ubuntu) Other desktop environments: KDE, FluxBox,XPDE desktop environment (similar to XP's environment), Xfce, Enlightenment
Freeware games: Cube, Cube 2 (sauerbraten), Armagetron Advance, BZ Flag, Astro Menace, Assault Cube, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, Tremulous, Warsow, Legends(Tribes clone that ROCKS), Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Neverball / Neverputt, Glest
Non-free software: Pioneer Linux Electricity (Windows Emulator)
Graphics: Kolour Paint
