Right your Wrongs...

Service and Support submitted by kyleigh Apr 9

I was one of the many consumers affected by the battery recall about a year or so back. I received a new battery about 8 months after I bought my new Inspiron 6000 as per the recall - 6 months later, that battery died! As in, no longer worked at ALL. When I called to try to get a replacement battery for a 6 MONTH OLD part, I was told that my warranty had expired. Yes, I had bought the computer over a year before, but YOU still provided me with a product that lasted for under one year. So, while technically it may not have been covered, I don't feel comfortable ever again buying from a retailer that provides their loyal consumers (that was my 3rd dell baught with a Preferred Account) with parts and services that only last for 6 months. Shame on you. 5 Comments »

How to fix Ideastorm

IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Apr 9

Lets face it the site is not going to get fixed anytime soon using the current methods. With almost 9000 ideas comprised of hundreds of duplicates it is too much to ask for Dell to be able to fix while keeping everyone happy.

People complain that they want to clean up the site so that original ideas do not get lost but then complain when it is their own idea that gets merged or deleted. Since it will take a while to go through all the ideas it will just cause problems every time Dell makes a change.

Here is a new plan:

1. Currently there are 2 sites (ideastorm and dellideastorm). Combine all the content into one of them and direct all visitors to that site.

2. Moderate all new ideas to check if they are a duplicate.

3. On the unused site Dell can then start building the new Ideastorm which will take over when it is fully fixed.

Doing things this way allows the site to stay open and Dell to fix things without having to calm people all the time about changes. Since it will be hard to keep up 2 sites and keep the comment and votes together they may have to clear the votes and comments to start the new ideastorm fresh. This will also give all the ideas a level playing field to see what is really popular and what was only popular because of timing. All status tags would be added to the new site and the old site would be kept as an archive of all the comments and previous votes.

This is not a perfect idea and I expect some suggestions in comments on how to improve it. I just think we need to find a way to fix things that is easier on us as well as the moderators in order to improve the overall relationship. 8 Comments »

Useful USB Ports

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by jshereshewsky Apr 9

I have a number of devices connected to my desktop via USB cords; web cam, mike, back-up discs, PDA, printer(s), etc. etc. Although my current DELL desktop has two USB ports on the front, most are from the rear, which is an area that is difficult to access. Can't you build a desktop machine with an expandable number of USB ports (powered) that connect from the front of the machine? 7 Comments »

Multiple Hard drive support for 17" Precision laptop line

Precision Workstations, Laptops submitted by surfpuppy2k Apr 9

I would like to see Dell offer two hard drive support for the 17" precision laptop line. Three drive support with RAID 5 would be great.

The 17" Inspirons have the a two drive option, but I think the Precision line would really benefit from it because of the nature of the work that is done with these machines.

I would love to have a smaller but fast OS and apps drive with a larger drive for data storage Comment »

Allow operating system CHOICE

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by rahbm Apr 9

Please make the operating system a priced option on EVERY PC, so that people know how much they are paying, and for what.

This will allow Ubuntu users to buy any system, as opposed to the limited range now, increasing sales.

This will not disadvantage Windows purchasers; they can simply tick the box for XP or Vista, and have a choice not available now.

This will also open up sales to those who want NO operating system, so that they can load their own. So far I have always bought 'white-box' PCs, but would like the ability to buy a real brand-name PC with support and warranty.

Simplified ordering (just pick the PC), with more potential customers!

Thank you for your consideration. 2 Comments »

Provide ubuntu's next LTS iso, 100% compatible with Dell

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by shaikailash Apr 10 **REVIEWED**

I'ts going to be release the long term support (LTS) version of ubuntu, Hardy Heron 8.04. It will be supported by the community for 3 years.

It could be useful and appreciate (I think) if DELL will customize this distro to be compatible with the hardware of Dell's laptops and desktops, and permit to download the official iso from the website.

It could be fantastic to download the iso, install it and have an operative system perfectly working.
Many people could be convinced to buy a Dell with Linux, without go crazy with the hardware compatibility.
Thank you

Dell needs to develop a backup strategy to the risk Microsoft poses to the industry

Gartner: Windows collapsing under its own weight; Radical change needed

Microsoft’s Windows juggernaut is collapsing as it tries to support 20 years of applications and becomes more complicated by the minute. Meanwhile, Windows has outgrown hardware and customers are pondering skipping Vista to wait for Windows 7. If Windows is going to remain relevant it will need radical changes. ****

Customer Service

Service and Support submitted by thombaird Apr 10

If Dell wants to slow down sales they are doing it the right way by getting rid of Gold Tech Support. My company needs to buy new computers and I will not buy any without Gold Tech Support. I made that mistake once before and never again. If I can't get Gold Tech Support I might as well buy from HP or Lenovo. They can provide non-English speaking techs in India. 3 Comments »

Specialized systems based on how they are used

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by jervis961 Apr 10

I know Dell is cutting back on specialized systems but it is what makes them unique. I think they need to expand on the concept when dealing with government agencies and other large orders that have unique uses that may require more than a stock system.

Take for example public safety which uses notebooks in vehicles at times. Government in some states have been trying to cut costs wherever possible but still need quality equipment that works well in the field. While Dell would love to stick them with a stock system such as the Latitude XT it just isn't justifiable to spend over $2500 per vehicle across a fleet. Dell could work with such an agency to discover what is truly important to them and come up with a solution that meets the need at a reasonable price. Since agencies constantly compare technologies it would most likely lead to more contracts once word gets around. 2 Comments »

Make longer lasting batteries for better portability

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice 05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery.

Basic laptops: at least 2 1/2 hours battery life
Entertainment laptops: at least 3 1/2 hours battery life
XPS laptops: at least 4 1/2 hours battery life 31 Comments »

Help out with Linux drivers

Operating Systems, Vostro products submitted by sathiyaneo Apr 10

I bought a vostro 1000 notebook loaded with Vista Home basic. I recently installed SUSE 10.3 and later Ubuntu 7.10. On both occasions i'd to curse myself for not having proper drivers for browsing net. Yes... I develop problems while surfing net. My network cards driver isn't recognised it seems. Can any body help me get out of this.
Why don't dell ship their drivers developed indigenously or supply drivers through net? 2 Comments »

printer and laptop in one

Printers and Ink, Laptops submitted by buttafuco 06/26/07

it would be so cool if you could print something without having to carry a separate, bulky printer, just your laptop. or instead of having to find a kinkos or hotel business center where they will charge you $.50 a page or something crazy. i think the technology is small enough that it could be incorporated into the bottom of the laptop as an option for people on the go. Dell could either make it like a battery that you can pop out and put a paper thru and bluetooth send from your computer or where the printer is actually part of the laptop like a bottom layer.

if you demote - explain why please. bad idea? not feasible? wouldn't buy it? duplicate? 23 Comments »

give feedbacks to ubuntu 's community

Linux, Service and Support submitted by siger Apr 10

hello dell,

you have created ubuntu computers and it's a very good idea. You may have conquered new customers (I hope for you) and ubuntu may have conquered new customers as well.

To improve linux you could create a tool to enable dell ubuntu users to transmit feedbacks to ubuntu 's developers to modify the operating system. 4 Comments »

Please offer the M2010 in Puerto Rico site.

Dell Web Site, XPS products submitted by stormrider451 Mar 13

Hey there.

I just finished chatting with one of the DELL sales representatives. I was trying to purchase an M2010 for myself. Unfortunately though, I couldnt because I am from Puerto Rico and DELL is not allowed to ship US products internationally (outside the 50 states and DC). If you have this policy, why do you not offer all your products worldwide? Stop loosing costumers like me in situations like these. You know what I would have had to do to buy this? Ship it to my aunt's house in Florida, fly up there to pick it up, come back to PR with it and then ask for the warranty to be covered in Puerto Rico. Please!! What is this?! Why make it so hard on costumers who love your company and simply want the best product you have? I mean, if I were good old common Mr. Smith trying to buy this product, I would already be knocking at apple's door to buy another computer. Dell is not in their best times, you need to start doing things differently if you want to succeed. Right now, dell has 3000 dollars less because I aint buying that PC. Make these products available in the Puerto Rico site!! Please!

Thankyou!

Intels 45nm processors are power savers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by bundy88 Apr 9

Dell should start offering choices for Intels 45nm processors in all desktops due to the fact that they save on power and are as fast or even faster then the standard 65nm processors. Check out this website for extra info. http://www.intel.com/technology/architecture-silicon/45nm-core2/ Comment »

Compete on Price Against Apple

Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by dzar Apr 9

It seems that no matter how hard I try, I cannot configure a high-end Dell workstation that's less than $1500 more than an equally equipped Apple Mac. Why? Has Apple cornered the market on quad-core Xeons? Their $3000 box with dual quad-core processors is loaded with technology that you have, too, but at $1500 less, it's impossible to buy Dell for this high-end hardware. 6 Comments »

Home users wants to buy DELL !

Desktops, Dimension products, Gaming, Linux submitted by pitlin 11/19/07

I agree with idea of Lukasz Wisniewski. I was looking to buy DELL desktop or laptop system for well few years without joy: i could only buy some 2nd hand machine, most of the times from unknown source. It seems that Dell doesn't realised that in Poland reasonable price of i.e. desktop system is around 3000 to 4000 zloty. That's around 1000 euro. I still have to choose between Dell's competitors or 3rd party companies products not well designed, with poor service contract. If i would live in some other EU country i could spend my money for pretty good Dell Inspiron or XPS desktop and get quality of product and 3 year next bussiness day on site support. Is it fair dear Michael ? Please think realy seriously about potential customers in Poland and give them what they are looking for. Be more serious about alternative OS as well - Dell always had 2 independent suppliers of parts or prducts but why always except software and OS ?

Upgrade ability for Desktops!

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by ajmukon Mar 6

Increase the upgradability (sp?) of all Desktop units.

Currently, the only upgrade options are RAM, HD, Video card (which is in itself low), and Disk drives.

allow us the option of upgrading our motherboard, cpu, PSU (if we get a larger video card), above, etc (if you can think of anymore, post a comment!) 25 Comments »
