Come out with a XPS 15.4"

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by visiocloud 10/06/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

I love the power options available on XPS systems but would never get one because 17" is too big for me and 14" is too small, I think many people would appreciate a powerful 15.4 inch laptop.

addition of 13.3" to Vostro notebook line

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Vostro products submitted by ojisan 10/05/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Am I alone in wanting a less bulkier notebook? I think it would be great, if reducing general bulk is not viable, to have a 13.3" screen option in the Vostro notebook line, with the configuration options of a 14.1" with dedicated graphics. It was possible on a XPS1210, Dell should not have a problem with 13.3", unless it was some sort of marketing decision to go with bigger notebooks. From what I've seen, Dell's 12.1" notebooks in the past were big sellers, I don't think there are any worries of not selling enough of them to not warrant an option. As I travel a lot for a small company, I would really love the idea of a more compact notebooks with the least sacrifice for power as much as possible while keeping the attractive price range and small business-minded features of a Vostro line.

We now offer a Vostro 1310. To find out the details, read more about this new product offering.

Support Pirated Windows - after all, Microsoft is - or tell Microsoft to stop because it harms your sales

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 10/05/07

NineMSN's reporting that

Microsoft turns to pirated Windows users to boost IE7 market share

* 5th October 2007
Microsoft is, for the first time, making Internet Explorer 7 available to users of pirated copies of XP.
...
The fact that Microsoft is now removing its "Windows Genuine Advantage" anti-piracy requirement indicates that it is facing the reality that a large proportion of Windows users are running pirated copies of Windows, and if the software giant wants to achieve market domination with its new browser, it can't neglect its "black market customers".

Hey, if Microsoft's supporting these users, Dell can too. Maybe add a community support section to your site to help those users.

Either that - or tell Microsoft to *STOP* supporting the illegal pirating of windows because all these people should be buying Windows from Dell instead -- noting that Dell
does sell legitimate copies of Windows
that these people should be buying instead and that Microsoft's support of Piracy is interfering with Dell's sales. 27 Comments »

Do away with the CD drawer cover on Vostro 400

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by eric7609 10/05/07

I'm suggesting to do away with the CD/DVD drawer cover on the Vostro 400 models. I recently purchased a Vostro 400 and the CD/DVD drawer constantly gets stuck on the silly flippy cover. I'm sure it was put there to make the front of the case pretty, but I'm not looking for pretty over fuction. I'll probably end up removing the cover. 5 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Design - Stickers?!

Simplify IT, Laptops submitted by chinstrap 10/06/07

Okay I am typing my note a second time after this silly website timed out or did something crappy to delete my first 5 minutes of typing note... Note I am not a techie.

I just got a Dell laptop and desktop issed from my new office. I switched to Apple for my home use about 3 years ago.

My advice to Dell is to follow Apple's lead with respect to design, style and innovation. It's like nothing has changed since the 90s with the PC, Microsft, Intel, stuff..

Here is one usable idea. Stop putting the annoying stickers on laptops right on the wrist rest area. They dig into your wrists and then when you try and take them off they leave an even more annoying sticky residue. After lysol, windex and my wife's nail polish remover, I got the residue off and started to take off the top smooth layer of the wrist area - annoying!! And all this on a brand new, top of the line Latitude (as my tech guys tell me). It's just an okay laptop if you ask me..

Dell - if you want to evolve, try innovating like Apple. Don't you have testers who use these machines in the real world tell you not to put those annoying stickers in place while telling you about other aspects of the computer? What about a mag connector for the power cord.. These are super simple and slam dunk ideas to implement.. I just don't get the process with the old school companies.. It's like GM and Ford trying to make better cars vs. the Japanese and Germans.. They have no clue how to build something what the consumer wants.. The average consumer want a computer that will do email, Internet, office, download photos, and music really well as that's probably what 90% of what people do.. 20 Comments »

Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments »

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Microsoft now lets Dell n-Series be used for volume licensing.

Dell, Operating Systems, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by jmxz 10/03/07

Seems Microsoft has a "new licensing program" for "Fake and Pirated" Windows users

Microsoft expects to support its Windows XP operating system for the foreseeable future, the company on Tuesday introduced a new licensing program designed to let users of fake or pirated copies of the business version of the OS upgrade
...a volume licensing contract that will allow them to replace fake or "mislicensed" copies of Windows XP Professional with legitimate versions.

This is interesting for Dell for a couple reasons.
  1. It makes the Dell open source pages a bit misleading where they have large bold paragraphs about " not qualified for Windows licensing use under any existing Microsoft Volume Licensing Program", and "Customers interested in a Microsoft® Windows® solution should purchase a Dell notebook pre-loaded with Windows XP Professional.". Idea:Perhaps Dell should add "or you can be eligible for volume licensing if you install a pirated Windows"
  2. If Microsoft's supporting pirated versions, that seems unfair for customers who pay full price for Dell for licensed versions. Idea: Perhaps you should tell Microsoft to stop this program because it's unfair to your paying customers.
PS: IdeaStorm needs a Windows category. I'm misfiling it under Multiboot. 4 Comments »

Time to bring out the QUAD-CORE processors...!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by michaelyork29 09/20/07

Dell,

I think its about time you bring in the new quad-core processors from Intel (and maybe AMD when they come out with them) as an option on some of the new desktops and possibly laptops. People who multi-task on their computer of use a lot of CPU power need these processors and by doing this you'll also be one of the few companies now putting these processors in consumer desktops which would give you an advantage to the "others."

Standard Open Source install base

Linux, Software submitted by bluefoxicy 10/04/07

Dell should ship all Windows-based machines with a standard Open Source software install base. There is another popular idea[1] that says to make an excess of software optional; this proposal instead focuses on only a standard install base, no end-user questioning.

Among the standard install base, Dell should include pre-installed:

* OpenOffice.org[2]
* Firefox[3]
* Thunderbird[3]
* Pidgin[4]
* GIMP[5][10]
* 7-zip[6]
* TrueCrypt[7]
* KeePass[8]
* PDFCreator[9]

"Europe" is not only France + Germany + UK

Linux, Service and Support submitted by warp10 08/08/07

Dell started selling PCs equipped with Ubuntu in Europe a few days ago. Anyway, looks like Dell think Europe is only France, Germany and UK. [1]
In Europe there are many countries that are good markets for Dell, and that wait the possibility to buy Ubuntu-installed Desktop and Notebook.
Please, give to the *whole* Europe the possibility to buy these computers.

Save yourself money and make customers happy.

Service and Support submitted by visiocloud 10/04/07

Recently had some problems that lead to Dell replacing my laptop;
they ended up sending me a newer model (1520) which I was appreciative of even though they had no option. (1505 no longer in production and no 1520s to send to me refurbished yet)
Problem: they downgraded my CPU without telling me, (2.16 - 2.0) when i asked to have it fixed they told me I had to choose between the right CPU or new computer, if I was to get the right CPU, I had to get a refurbished system.
After countless hours, we settled on the new system and they offered me 100$ compensation:
The difference between the two cpus : 75 $, they spent 25 more dollars to insure I didn't get the right laptop. Save money, make customers happy: change the policy for this situation to be able to just give the customer what he rightfully deserved, hopefully avoid this problem in the future.

Ad Campaign: What can you do with Ubuntu?

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by limulus 09/04/07

There are currently ideas under review, such as "make ubuntu shine" which relate to advertising Dell's Ubuntu systems. If Dell decides to do some ads, here's an idea for an ad campaign:

"What can you do with Ubuntu?"

Find one or more people who have bought a Dell Ubuntu system and have them show off what they can do with their systems; string the clips those together into a commercial. Some themes that should become obvious:

* easy software installation and updates

* command line not necessary (Ubuntu is very much a GUI OS)

* compiling software not necessary

* full range of applications

* 3rd party proprietary apps, like Flash and Google Earth

* all the little games you could ever want (e.g. Sudoku)

* 'it just works'

* "wobbly windows" and other spiffy cool effects for fun :)
