Dell List the Error Codes from the Dell Diag. CD

Service and Support submitted by jorge 07/08/07

Dell List what the Error Codes from the Dell Diag. CD mean so your customers can identify what it wrong with their systems without having to call and go through at least 2 people to get the meaning of a code. Most phone support techs do NOT have the look up table (call and find out if you don't believe me) even though the manager above them states they do as they read off what the code means, yea I take up to get the answer to this.

Give costumers a reason why Dell recommends what it does

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by sakuramboo 07/08/07

I would like to see exactly WHY Dell tells me that it recommends one option over another. Why does Dell recommend 1 Gig of ram over 2 Gigs or 512 Megs of RAM, for example? Show us comparisons with in depth analysis as to why I should go with one set of options over another. 4 Comments »

I'm just thinking that it would be better to use this on the notebooks and desktops - there can be up to a 7 degree celcius drop in temperature. 8 Comments »

desktops and notebooks

submitted by blackbart358 07/09/07

I am about to buy a new desktop computer. I have researeched all of the companys and have decided to purchase it from Lenovo instead of Dell. The reason is that Lenova will custom build the unit the way I want it and their tech call center is in the USA. I want a new computer with Windows XP home not Vista which Lenovo will build for me. I tried out a new computer with Windows Vista and found that most of my older software would not run on it, such as Wordperfect 11. Also some of my other units would not work with Vista, my printer and scanner. HP would not offer driver downloads for the units, they suggested that I upgrade to a new printer and scanner. If Dell would build me the same unit at the same price and offer me tech support from a USA center I would buy the Dell instead of the Lenovo.

Multi touch, image sensing and power generating diodes in display

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by j.bandringa 07/09/07

I would like to have an image sensing, power generating and multi touch display. Multifunctional organic diodes can do this.

Multifunctional organic diodes can:

• Show you something like a regular display (OLED);

• See you like a webcam (photodiode);

• Built multi touch sensing displays;

• Generate electricity like a solar cell.

I would like Dell to promote research in this field. Here you find a patent of a multifunctional organic diode. It's written in Japanese though. Take a look at the videos in the comments if you want. 4 Comments »

Standardize Laptops

Dell, Laptops submitted by mkmaster78 07/09/07

Ok I fully admit there may be a high likelihood of this being a dupe but I couldn't find this in any search. Basically it goes like this, laptops are almost completely nonupgradeable (I know Badblood posted about making upgradeable laptops) and no two different styles can interchange parts. This idea is something that would help this along immensely. Dell should create an open standard for laptop design (such as desktops have ATX, microATX, BTX, etc) and release a series of laptops based on it with the ability to purchase parts later that the user can install themselves as they would with a desktop. Alienware (which as we know Dell owns) does something similar, but this standard could be released openly across all manufacturers allowing an experience with your laptop much like that of a desktop. This would allow for not only more options for laptops but also a longer laptop lifetime as parts could be swapped in and out as desired or required (in case of hardware failure).
So come on Dell, open up those laptops to us. 8 Comments »

Offer a student discount

Dell, Education, Sales Strategies submitted by doomlord52 07/09/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

A lot of companys offer this. A student discount. Apple sells their Macs for 20% less if your a student. Software companies often offer this on usefull products, such as Cinema 4d, Photoshop, and so on. If dell could offer this, it would help students get dell computers FROM dell. Although you can get a dell pc for $1000 or so, their not really that powerful. This kind of discont would be good on percision, Dimensions and notebooks. 15 Comments »

IdeaStorm Mods: FAQ

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 07/09/07

1. Logged in as dell_adminX you represent Dell on IdeaStorm not yourself, if you want to post personal chat use a personal account.
2. Never relate your personal account to the admin account or you'll suffer the back lash.
3. As an Admin use only structured neutral language, anything personal and you'll end up with a chat room like it is now and which you seem to dislike.
4. If you change the state of an Idea state why, changing a state with no comment/point is well pointless. Again this text can be from a structured predefine list of possibilities but again keep it neutral.
5. If you perform an action that is questionable make sure to have a backup of your action so you can un-do it when you're called to prove why you did it.
6. If you get in a personal dialog you may as well delete that admin account as it will be useless from that point on, in terms of authority.
7. Most of the regulars are helping you out but if you don't help them they will stop and make your already overburdened job even harder.
8. Concentrate on getting Ideas moved up and leave the petty bugs go unless you have a dedicated developer who can act on them.
9. If you don't have a dedicated developer get one! Or take a course NOW!
10. You have rules written down so stick to them or the house will run amok like it is now. If you edit them make sure its known by an announcement no one will know they changed unless you alert the group(s).
11. If you're not really going to act on something don't get a poster excited that you are, why not wait till you are going to act to alert the poster of the action, looks a lot better if you state it and it happens as opposed to stating it and well, still waiting. If you're not then say you're not and end it then/now.
12. (the rest can add their FAQ's below)

Note: Its best you mods not add to it as you're too busy as it is, right? Just read and observe, most here have been or are mods elsewhere. 15 Comments »

The ultimate ultra-portable

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by markvs624 07/09/07

I would like to see dell introduce a real ultra-portable notebook. It would be nice to see a 10.1 inch LED backlit monitor with a Core 2 Duo processor and a 64gb flash SSD. No low voltage processors! Cool the machine better, don't restrict its usefulness. At the least, allow underclocking of the Core 2 Duo.

A minimum 1gb of ram upgradeable to at least 2gb is a must, as I'm sure ultra-portable users are tired of 512! No internal optical drive should be required (or at least the option to delete and replace with a media bay battery); you could brand a usb 2.0 DVD-RW and sell it as an accessory. Only one to two usb 2.0 ports should be included (come one, who needs more than one on each side?), and 6-7+ hour battery life is a must. The standard bluetooth, draft N wifi, and all wwan options should be made available, as well as Windows XP Professional.

Tablet functionality would be great, but not a must, considering the absence of any other tablet from Dell's product line. This awesome machine doesn't have to be a Latitude, though the magnesium case would definitely be a plus. And don't set the price point at $3k like fujitsu!

I don't know... I'm just tired of having to shop other brands to even consider below 12.1 inch notebooks. I'd like to see the best computer company in the world make the world's most powerful ultra-portable at an affordable price point. 7 Comments »

All operating systems on all platforms!

Operating Systems submitted by markvs624 07/09/07

Do just what the title says: offer all operating systems on all platforms with full support. Don't restrict Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Unbuntu to certain models.

Make the base price for all base operating systems the same: XP Home = Vista Home Basic = Unbuntu. No discounts at the entry level. No $50 cheaper for Unbuntu. No $50 more for Vista.

Give no incentive either way The same customers who buy XP Pro and Vista Ultimate now will still buy those versions in the future. LET THE CUSTOMER DECIDE. 48 Comments »

Notification about updates to product lines

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by brutten 07/09/07

As a reseller of a fair amount of Dell’s products it would be really nice to be notified of major changes in the product lines before they hit the web page. Maybe a mailing list?

CUSTOMER: “I really like this laptop will you order me five more?”

ME: “Sure, I will order them today!”

DELL: “That model has been replaced with XXX”

ME: “Hello customer that model is not available anymore let’s start over from the new product lines.”

CUSTOMER: “Hmm, what has changed... options, price, specs etc...

ME: “Arrgh!” 1 Comment »
