Notebooks BIOS should support AHCI.

Most of the Dell desktop and workstations now support AHCI operation of the SATA controller. This operation can give significantly increased hard drive performance; but requires special support in the BIOS, the motherboard/chipset, and the hard drive itself.

I own a Dell 640m with T7200 chipset, most features maxed-out. The fact that the BIOS does not support AHCI, while the chipset does, is very disappointing. The notebooks from Apple and HP both do offer this feature for the same chipset(s). (HP in its BIOS and Apple in the firmware.)

It should be feasible enough to add the functionality to the notebook BIOS since the desktop BIOS do have the feature available, yes? Comment »

Add social more networking features to the Dell community with Google Friend Connect

There could be some great features to add to the Dell community sites. I'm sure Google would be more than happy to customize some things for Dell and make it incorporate easily into the sites since you already have some of the functions. Dell, Google and SalesForce are all partners already.

Do not hire nontechnical people for techsupport

This is the main problem with the India call centers - they have no idea what they are doing. They are obviously reading a scripted diagnosing tool and have no personal knowledge of computing issues.

I have both home and business accounts with Dell. When I call in for support on my Business account, I get a good old-fashioned American geek, who instantly understands that I am fairly technical, and doesn't treat me like an idiot.

The Indian call centers, not having knowledge themselves, do not recognize that I know anything, and treat me like an idiot as they read from the diagnosis tool. Yeah, I know the computer is plugged in. Yeah I know that I have internet connectivity. Sheesh.

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.

Offer NVIDIA's new chipset in your systems

Give the same options and prices Worldwide

Yesterday I configured an Inspiron 1420 in my country's Dell site. It had LESS POWERFULL options (CPU, graphics card, etc), and it was more expensive than an Inspiron 1420 in the US site. $1300 vs. $1800... I know shipment must be included...but $500?????

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux

It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.

My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.

Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

when there is a problem with the Master Boot Record the ISO can't repair it and we have to go to a reparation company.

Please give us the original disc and not an ISO. IT Is more expensive but , more satisfaction for the customer. 8 Comments »

MARKET linux PCs for real, and Open Office, for real

I actually laughed when I read some Dell staffers' comments along the lines of "my research shows the customers want Windows".

Of course the research shows that, of course Dell isn't selling many Linux PCs. Probably the leading topic on Idea Storm has been Linux and Open Source. But that is because Dell attracts mostly "techies" here...not customers.

If you want to sell something, you need to advertise and market it. Microsoft has had a decades long campaign to get into the position they are in. The common consumer thinks Microsoft IS their computer.

Dell has moved forward, but not much, and they have limited and burried the Open Source option and resisted every step of the way. That is a fact, regardless of the lip service Dell gives here.

Open Source, particularly Linux distros can SAVE the customers money. I've crunched the numbers myself, I've calculated the TCO. Stability, reliability, cost.....how and why can Dell continue to avoid the reality of these issues by saying "our research indicates the customers want Windows"?

Give Open Source the marketing exposure it deserves and that the customer deserves. Dell made their name building custom ordered computers. They were known as "the best" in many regards. Then they lost their way. I was optimistic when Mr. Dell returned, but apparently he lost his way as well.

Market the Open Source options for what they really are and do it across the product line. Tell the customers what it really is and don't make it seem like some sort of off-beat secondary option...it simply isn't that anymore unless you continue to make it that.

Check your reaserch, your customers want value....lower prices....reliability..... The answer to that is Linux no matter how you slice it. So SELL it....for real.

Music during initial setup

Disable music during the initial setup of business class laptops.

I work in a shared office and every time I setup a new laptop everyone has to listen to the annoying music until setup is complete. I can't find any way turn it off, the volume and mute buttons do not work until I get to the desktop.

This may seem petty but my co-workers are trying to talk to customers and distractions like Dell startup music are not appreciated. Comment »

Computers for Autistic Children

Hello, my son, Ian is 6 years old and has Autism spectrum disorder. One of the characteristics of autism is restricted interests. Well, my sons' interest is quite restricted to computers!!
And his brand of choice is DELL.
We have purchased him about 5 different VTech brand computers for kids. He masters them almost immediately and gets frustrated because he likes WORD so he can type.
It would be awesome if DELL made challenging computers for kids , especially kids with autism.
This was in fact Ian's idea. He desperately wants a DELL computer of his own, a LAPTOP!!! He is very specific. I recently purchased a new Dell Desktop sytem and let the kids have my old DELL. Well, Ian is tired of it and now wants a Laptop.
He is so funny.
Please consider doing something for kids on the autism spectrum that are interested in computers!
