Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

13" ultra-slim notebook - XPS 1320

XPS products submitted by digitalexit 03/12/07

A 13" ultra-slim notebook with 2 6-cell batteries and USB-powered external DVD drive.

13" hits the sweet spot for me, not too small like the 12" and not too big like the 14". 1280x800 on 13" produces large enough text so you don't have to stick your head right in front of the display to read a web page.

I rarely use the DVD drive - my games and references are loaded via CD/DVD images and I rip my movies into Divx. Files are transfered between machinese via Internet or USB sticks or Flash cards. The built-in DVD drive just takes up valuable space that can be easily used for another battery. If the design allows two exact same batteries to be placed inside the body, I can probably hot-swap a 3rd one when one goes completely dry. 3 6-cell batteries will probably last me a full trans-continental flight without rebooting or hybernating - perfect!

And how about the option for a 32GB or even 64GB Flash-based SATA hard drive? Expansive, I know, but would be really nice to have, having no moving parts, draws less power and runs faster than traditional hard drives.

This is a notebook designed for people with know-hows, so I'd suggest a powerful graphic processor and the option for at least up to 4GB memory. 802.11n wireless is of course a must. How's about calling it XPS 1320? 1 Comment »

6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 72 Comments »

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 734 Comments »

Easier way to OPT OUT of Dell selling my private information

Advertising and Marketing submitted by ninefoot3 10/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I rec'd a brochure yesterday saying Dell and DFS were going to share my private info with other 3rd party companies for marketing purposes. Well, it said that in about 5,000 words or so. At the end is a box stating that I may opt-out of this by calling the number listed or writing a letter (including certain info) and send it to the listed address.

I chose to use the phone method. After being shoved around to a few people, I finally got someone who could help me 'opt-out'. This involved 'opening a case' as if I had a technical issue with my account.

My IdeaStorm suggestion, hey Dell, make it easier for us to OPT-OUT of your attempts to make money off of my personal information. What's the matter? Didn't make enough money off of my patronage to Dell products and the interest rates charged? Getting an extra $1 for my name, address and age information going to help Michael Dell get a new boat? C'mon!

While I'm disturbed that Dell wanted to sell me out, I'm more disturbed that Dell made it difficult for us to opt-out. A simple URL would have been nice. I know, that would make more people opt-out and Dell would have less names to sell. It's like a mail-in-rebate or the lack of a cancel button in the account information at freecreditreport.com, you HAVE to call, and since that's a pain in the neck, most people will sloth themselves into something they don't really want. 42 Comments »

make dell website visible with Firefox on Linux

Dell Web Site submitted by tashmooclam 10/24/07

Among several websites that cannot be viewed running Firefox on Linux, Dell is one of them.
Why is this?
Does Dell know about this bug in their website?
I find it very ironic to say the least. I am running Linux now, but I cannot shop on Dell's website for a new Linux laptop.
Al Gore invented the internet, can't Dell make websites that work with Linux? 5 Comments »

Improve Language testing and training for offshore call centers

Service and Support submitted by badblood 07/05/07

There are lots of complaints here about the language ability of service staff in offshore locations, and requests to bring service centers to "English" speaking countries.

Why not be a little more rigorous in testing English language skills and providing language training.

Make the recruitment and placement standards higher. There are literally millions of people in India who speak very good English. Recruit them. 1 Comment »

Why are business computers so boring

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by badblood 07/11/07

Dell's new line of Vostro computers are frankly boring. Why is it that business computers like office buildings are boring. If you are like me you spend a lot of time on a work computer mildly annoyed by it's minimalist nature.

Why don't all business computers come with integrated webcams. If anyone is going to use webcams en mass you'd think businesses would do it.

Work can be boring enough without being surrounded by boring furniture, boring work colors and boring computers.

Spice up the work place just a little and add some less boring features and designs to work computers. 15 Comments »

Mr. Jarvis take action now.

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood 07/15/07

Mark Jarvis serves as chief marketing officer at Dell, overseeing the company's global marketing effort spanning consumer and commercial businesses. In this role, Mr. Jarvis is responsible for global brand, online and communications. As a member of the Dell executive leadership team, Mr. Jarvis reports to Michael Dell as a consultant.

Mr. Jarvis is failing to promote Ubuntu sufficiently through the web or through TV.

Mr. Jarvis take action now, market Ubuntu as a general consumer option, not as the toy of geeks. Mr Jarvis promote Ubuntu on television, on billboards, on radio.
