Reduce the number of Dell advertisements, on the Dell website.

Dell Web Site submitted by bbr Feb 21

Advertisements have their time and place in all websites, however i feel that the dell website is currently using too many.

Please reduce the number of advertisements to promote your own services, and make the website more user friendly. The huge number of advertisements are clogging and disrupting the site design.

There's HUGE banners on almost every sub page when trying to select hardware.
Also see : http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10076963/Less_sub_pages_to_select_hardware< people are already on the dell site, they'll have a pretty good idea of what they are looking for.
Having to scroll trough each page due to giant advertisements on each page reduce the ease by which a customer can select and buy a computer.

If you're already on the inspiron page, there isn't much point in displaying an advert for inspirons.
It's about as useful as microsoft putting up a " buy Vista " banner on their Vista support forum.

The dell site looks nice, but the huge load of advertisements on a commercial page is rather silly. 1 Comment »

CO 2 Cartridge for Silent, Efficient Processor Cooling and Extending Battery Life

Laptop Power submitted by doctorcox Feb 21

If my calculations are correct one 16mm cartridge could provide 24+ hours of cooling power. Battery drain would be substantially reduced. Cooling chambers could be designed into the CPU for extreme cooling efficiency. Alternately, the CPU could be enveloped in a cooling chamber. Sensors could detect low cartridge level for switching to fan power. 9 Comments »

Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery.

Laptop Power submitted by sotopheavy Feb 21

My rule of thumb is if a battery goes down below an hour of laptop life it is useless . This usually happens within the first 8 months of owning a laptop for me.

If I'm using my laptop to surf the internet I will usually plug it in until it's full, then unplug it, then plug it in when it gets low, then unplug it again when it's full. This got so annoying that I eventually just left it plugged in and my battery now lasts 15 minutes with wifi off and the screen dimmed all the way down. There has to be a better way to manage laptop power than this. Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery. 4 Comments »

Take A Bite out of Apple

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by spiegelmat Feb 19

Take a Bite our of Apple instead of vice versa. Apple has 2 all in ones 20" and 24" with up to 4GB of RAM 2.86 Duo Core Processor, 512MB Graphics card. Dell is only offering 20" All in One with only up to 2 GB of RAM, a slower processor and 256MB Graphic Card and is not customizeable.
These NO WIRE machines are hot! Just look at the traffic in the Apple Stores. Your offering is opening price points and is limited. Please Develop a 24" ALL IN ONE WINDOWS MACHINE WITH / up to 4GB RAM 2.,86 Processor, 512MB Graphics Card, Up to 500MB Hard Drive.and is customizeable. The Apple machine retails @$3250, with the Dell Business Model, you should come out better competively, and these machines offer you not only great sales opportunity but probably margin opportunities since there is only 1 Manufacturer at present that realizes this potential. Please don't make me switch to a Mac, I probably wouldn't live long enough to learn the new OS and convert all my files

Prevent laptop overcharge

Laptop Power submitted by sotopheavy Feb 20

It seems like leaving the power cord plugged in too long decreases the capacity of the battery over time. There should be a switch or software setting to disconnect the battery form the power source when the battery is fully charged and reconnect it at a specified amount.

If you have it set to 80% then the battery would disconnect from the power cord until the battery got down to 80% then it would reconnect and charge the battery again. If you turned it off, the battery would stay connected to the power source as long as it is plugged in. 13 Comments »

Connecting a Notebook to TV

XPS products, Laptops submitted by jog4joy Feb 9

I have an XPS notebook. In the User's Manual that came with the computer various options for connecting the to a TV are described. These options focus on using the HDMI or the S-Video outputs from the notebook. I recommend that an other, perfectly viable option be described. The option is to take the VGA output from the laptop and connect it to either a VGA or a DVI input on the TV. I use this option (DVI input) with my Sharp AQUOS 46' HD LCD TV. Excellent results. I see it as a perfectly viable alternative to HDMI as I do not need the fancy audio. And the cable is cheaper.

So I recommend that the User Manual include a section on the above option. 6 Comments »

Cancel Orders Online

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by godzilla Feb 7

It's time Dell started to value their customer's time. Dell makes it fairly easy to order some items, but when the need to cancel an order arises you make it nearly impossible, or more typically a PITA.

I just spent 15+ minutes waiting on hold (according to the clock on my phone) before I even got into your bizarre menu system. Then I had to wait (I'm still waiting at 27 minutes) for something mysterious to happen on the other end with your rep.

As customers, we deserve to work with a company that makes it easy. total time now,,,, 29 minutes 27 seconds. Disgusting... 1 Comment »

Make peace with Apple

Dell submitted by juanteje Feb 7

Make peace with Apple and provide support for MacOS when it comes to drivers for all products other than computers. At the end of the day it is lucrative for both parties to come to an understanding. 3 Comments »

XPS-Whole of life upgrade!

XPS products submitted by kcobley Feb 8

Today I received an email reply to my request for upgrading the CPU on my XPS720 BIOS A05 to an Intel E8500. The text of the reply " Dell does not offer processor or motherboard upgrdes for discreet items.Dell does not recommend upgrading the processor or motherboard in any given system as the design layout has been customized on all Dell systems and the power of the system may not be suitable for the system.Dell does not recommend that you perform an upgrade of the processor as this might damage the system."

The first rule of gaming PC's THEY MUST BE UPGRADEABLE and that includes Motherboards, CPU's,PSU's!

The second rule of gaming PC's Machine information and software updates such as the recent BIOS A05 must be accompanied by information posts, that tell customers what these updates do!

The third rule of gaming PC's DON'T MISINFORM YOUR CUSTOMERS that bizzare email is gobbledegook, what does the phrase "the power of the system might not be suitable for the system " MEAN!

An XPS buyer is likely to know what is possible. The E8500 is according to Intel's publicity requires both less power and cooling that its predecessors! The A05 BIOS is required and it fit's the 775 socket. SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!

THE KEY TO SUCESS IN GAMING MACHINE SALES IS LIFETIME UPGRADABILITY AND SUPPORT in other words we don't need to buy new cases especially as the XPS720 case is a large BTX or a PSU or Optical drives. We only need to replace what is needed to be replaced and that's new generation CPU's and the occasional Motherboard on socket change and worn out componentary like hard drives/video cards. It's possible to make money selling upgrade componetary (newegg and other sellers do). It's Dell's business model policy that is the problem. 1) Dell needs to ensure on contracing for motherboards that Both NVidia and Intel are going to support them and not produce compatability problems-It's clear there is some problem with component ordering. On new CPU inroduction Motherboard providers need to be required to test New CPU's with boards. Dell should also test new CPU's on Test machines and after CPU's are tested, they can be released as CPU UPGRADES. Dell could email all XPS owners and offer upgrades to Motherboard ,CPU and other componentry and this could even be carried out by service personel at the customer 's cost (this would also save on warranty claims as a lot of people may replace Graphics cards and CPU's prior to failure in operation).
This is far more environmentally accptable than the previous Dell policy of not upgrading thereby forcing customers into buying new machines. Customer may then purchase continually year in and year out rather than a major purchase every 4 years and ongoing service plans could also be sold.
By whole of life I mean as long as essential components such as motherboards/fans can effectively modernize the machine around 4-5 years, however if an unexpected development occurs that reneders modernization impossible well so be it. One things for sure CPU's/HardDrives (replaced by Solid state) and better ram are going to lower power requirements. GPU cards will eventually lower power also, when they proceed down the Intel road in chip performance rather than the very low tech and sloppy SLI designed to extract as much money as is possible from customers for too little reliablity and performance. 17 Comments »

Blow out the IdeaStorm forum beyond Dell, beyond computers

IdeaStorm, Service and Support submitted by cmelville Feb 7

I think IdeaStorm is a great idea. It helps Dell, helps its competitors, raises everyone's game and in useful to consumers. Why limit the idea to Dell computers? Why not host a comprehensive IdeaStorm site, perhaps with a Dell computer IdeaStorm link prominently displayed, where consumers can open IdeaStorm Categories on anything, outdoor gear, cell phones, watches, carbon fiber bicycle frames, laundry detergent and on and on. Dell could be the engine behind a global resource for improving anything--product or service. IdeaStorm would become synonymous with improvement and synonymous with Dell. The promote/demote/discuss model is great for Dell, would be just as great for other companies. 20 Comments »

Dell must cut ties to Scientology

Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by dakkona Feb 7

A video has recently been leaked from the 2006-2007 Church of Scientology New Year's gathering, where their leader, David Miscavige, lauds a campaign to spread Scientology and lead an operation to "OBLITERATE" psychiatry. And he PRAISES DELL for AIDING them in distributing a booklet of theirs called "The Way to Happiness" all over Africa!

See http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=hfu7Sr50N7U (Dell is mentioned about 8 minutes in)

Dell, if this association with the so-called Church of Scientology continues, IT MUST END. While the beliefs of individual scientologists are not a problem, the leadership is corrupt, members have to pay exorbitant amounts of money to progress, and their tactics in dealing with critics and those who try to leave the organization are despicable. But that isn't all. Visit http://www.xenu.net and http://www.whyaretheydead.net for information.

Regardless of what one thinks of Scientology though, it is NOT Dell's place to aid the spread of a particular belief system or campaign. 124 Comments »

Need a non-gaming notebook with hi-res and DVI/HDMI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by jcsalem Feb 6

My business needs notebooks with high-resolution TruLife screens and DVI or HDMI out. It would be fine if the DVI/HDMI were only available via a docking port.

We're a small photography business that does a lot of 1-on-1 client presentations on the road and having the high-resolution, high-contrast screen is essential. In the office, we need DVI (preferably) or HDMI output for our desktop displays. I suspect there are many other kinds of businesses in a similar situation.

The only laptops that fit this bill are the high-end XPS gaming laptops and the Precision Workstation laptops. These are heavier, much larger, and more expensive than we'd like. They also feature much more 3D graphics horsepower than we'll ever use and their battery life is subpar.

The Latitudes are good except they don't have the TrueLife displays. The Vostros would be perfect except no DVI. Same with the Inspirons.

Can't we get something like a Vostro 1500 or a Latitude D830 with WSXGA+, TrueLife, and DVI out? 13 Comments »
