Dell needs to pick up the pace in releasing new designs

Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Mar 13

Dell is notorious for lack of innovation and has been making strides to change. Unfortunately they are still loosing out because they take to long to get to market and by the time they do someone else has usually beat them to the punch.

Here is an example: At CES this year Dell showed off an XPS 16 inch Laptop concept that has yet to make it to market.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/06/dell-showing-off-16-inch-xps-concept-laptop/

Yesterday Acer (who overtook Dell in notebook sales recently) came out with its Gemstone line of notebooks.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/acer-unveils-the-second-gen-gemstone/

"Coming in a special blue ("Gemstone Blue," how wild), the new 16- and 18.4-inch machines feature 16:9 1080p screens, 1.5GHz Penryn processors, 512MB NVIDIA 9650m GS graphics, and those Blu-ray drives we heard about. The graphics chip is at the center of Acer's new CineReal system, which offloads BD playback to the GPU and provides Dolby headphone output (and real 5.1 sound on the bigger model)."

Pick up the pace Dell. 30 Comments »

TheOpenCD.org should be an option for any Dell OS, regardless if Windows or Ubuntu

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 05/26/07

Dell should offer the TheOpenCD.org CD as an option for customers to select when configuring their purchase. Again, irrelevant of Windows or Ubuntu. TheOpenCD offers the following Software Suites for Free and without the usual Bloatware that irritates customers:

Design - Blender, GNU Image Manipulation Program, Inkscape, NVU, Scribus, Tux Paint.

Games - Battle for Wesnoth, Enigma, Neverball, Sokoban YASC.

Internet - Azureus, FileZilla, Firefox, Gaim, HTTrack, RSSOwl, Thunderbird, TightVNC, WinSCP.

Multimedia - Audacity, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers, Stellarium.

Productivity - MoinMoin, OpenOffice.org, PDFCreator, Notepad2.

Utilities - 7-zip, Abakt, Clamwin, GTK+, HealthMonitor, Workrave.

Due to an unpredictable change I alter my idea to !

TheOpenDisc.com CD should be given out if TheOpenCD.org is not complete enough for you! Its pretty much the same thing, opensource software for the price of Free yet many more apps! So a win win for all! Yeay!

BLACK backlit keyboard for Dell XPS M1730

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by lorax1284 08/31/07

I know there are threads asking for Backlit keyboards: many of them merged into one.

Dell is introducing a backlit keyboard in the XPS M1730. Super.

But it's white-ish colour contrasts badly with the case.

Other comments about how "fugly" the XPS M1730 have been mitigated by the appearance of better photos (mostly with the screen / lid closed!) so maybe the outside of the M1730 case will be just fine... but that white backlit keyboard is a non-starter: opening the lid for the first time will be like seeing a beautiful stone along the forest trail, only when you pick it up, underneath is gross things crawling over other grosser things.

Consider this a backpedal from my "I'll wait for the XPS redesign" idea, cuz it's starting to look like I really only have to wait for Dell to source a black backlit keyboard. 5 Comments »

M1730 should look more like the M1330

XPS products submitted by saleemohaib 08/16/07

I saw the pics of the upcoming Dell XPS M1730 laptop. I was really disappointed. I was not expecting something so ugly from Dell. By the way you can view the pics on this link:
Not for the faint-hearted people. Get ready before you go to this link and for those who have seen it before no need to see them again ;)

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2859 I

I also saw the M1330 and it look really nice. I think it might save Dell a lot of time and effort if they just made a 17' version of M1330 and call it M1730. Because I want a Santa Rosa XPS 17' laptop soon :)

I think including a 2 Megapixel camera on the M1730 would also be nice and color choice would be appreciated as available for M1330.

Looking forward to your coments.

By the way 'Dell' really appreciate the IdeaStrom. 27 Comments »

Easy access to fans for cleaning on laptops

Laptops submitted by celticgibson 04/22/07

As we all know, the inspiron laptops get hot once dust builds up on the CPU/GPU grills and it's impossible to clean them without having to resort to taking the latop apart. It would be awesome if you could put blank plates on the bottom of the laptop, where the fans take in air, to allow for easy access for removal of fans and hence the cleaning of the grills. This would save many a problem with overheating hardware and endless tech support problems. 17 Comments »

Keyboard Led Lights Notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by zomby 08/20/07

Today's PC has cool keyboards, such like microsoft reclusa and saitek eclipse. I tend to use my notebook in the dark before bedtime and it is hard to see the keys on the keyboard, unless I had the light on.
It will be neat if in the near future notebook be built with a keyboard that lights up. To save on power there will be a optional on and off switch on the surface of the notebook, giving the options to turn the lights on or off when needed. Most of the time I use my notebook to be plug to the wall therefore, a keyboard that lights in the dark, would make it neat.

hope you use my suggestion, thanks. 7 Comments »

External power button on laptop for use when docked

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by rsimon 09/03/07

I would like to see an external power button on laptops so that when it is sitting on the desk and plugged in to monitor/keyboard it does not need to be opened to turn it on or off.

To prevent it powering on when in a bag it could be disabled when on battery power / or off the docking station which should be available for all notebook ranges.

It should be positioned near the front so it easily accessed, and should have an option to be disabled for anyone who finds it annoying 1 Comment »

CarbonFibre or Stainless Steel for XPS 1330

Dell, XPS products submitted by realskript 08/28/07

How about a Carbon Fibre option, or a Stainless Steel.. or Brushed Aluminum option for the XPS 1330 ? (even all xps notebooks :S... minus the 2010 of course)

It would decrease delays because of "painting" the laptop...
It wouldn't "fade" over time..
More durable
Better look
Makes Dell a better competitor in "style"
Provides the Consumer with more options to better "personalize" their very own laptop.

By the way... i mean REAL CarbonFibre, aluminum etc... high quality material for a high quality product. 19 Comments »

Laptop Screen that Rotates

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by badblood 09/06/07

Widescreen laptops are nifty for watching movies, yet they are rubbish for writing documents.

On selected laptops make it possible to rotate the monitor - like the picture below - to make it easier to work.....

Decent Bags for M1330

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by rsimon 09/02/07

Why not make some decent bags available for the M1330 - USA has a decent range but new zealand range is very poor. Most of them either look like something from the 1990s or are designed for far larger computers. We bought a M1330 for portability and looks, and we need bags to match.

Kudos to Dell for the M1330 sleve by the way - a very nice touch, Comment »

Better Notebook sound and features

Laptops submitted by foxx 02/17/07

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.

Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Make the Precision work stations better looking.

Precision Workstations submitted by jervis961 09/04/07

I like the specs on the new Precision 6300 but it looks like a
darker grey version of my Inspiron 6000. Why hasn't Dell tried to make
the thing better looking? The least they could have done is put it in a
Latitude case.

Backlit Desktop Keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by jok3r 09/06/07

Hey,

When I play games, I like to play in the dark- because it lets me concentrate on the screen.

The annoying thing about that is that I have to try and touch type- which I'm not very good at- because I haven't got a lamp or anything. (And no, I don't really want to go out and get a lamp- I'm a bit stubborn :P)

What I'm suggesting is a keyboard such as:

http://www.logicapproach.com/images/A-LG.jpg

With some media buttons added in and a blue light coming through the letters and around each key. I like the feel of these types of keyboards, but I can't afford the expensive one's- Logitech G15 etc.

Thanks. 1 Comment »
