Get Splashtop available on most if not all computers.

Desktops, Linux submitted by he_the_great Jun 12

Splashtop is an integrated Linux desktop that lets you instantly boot your computer into an environment to browse the web and other tasks. I don't see any reason not to have it everywhere. 1 Comment »

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Phoenix Hyperspace

Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by pavlosky50 Mar 10

Hyperspace is the best thing I can think of, for laptops. Is Dell planning to offer it soon? It will for sure make more people buy laptops by upgrading to one with Hyperspace in it. The added convenience will justifie a new one. 9 Comments »

Dell: Dude! You're getting Dell Instant On OS!

Operating Systems submitted by jorge 11/06/07

This is the next step Dell, get on the bandwagon now!

Elaboration: Dell use or create your own Instant-On-OS, much like or just like Phoenix Technology's HyperSpace or SplashTop! You can make the decision but get one of those on board now!

More Elaboration: its for any OS so no matter which fence you sit on you'll get faster boot times! How can you beat that!

End Elaboration----Instant On OS

This is not only the fastest to boot OS but will also make you green, environmentally and financially! On top of that you can also include the bloated Microsoft OS on a hard drive (soon to be phased out, the hard drive that is, before you MS fans get tweeked).

So add this to all your motherboards as an option when configuring a system to order, also leave the hooks in there so anyone who's shortsighted now can still add it later, at a cost of course.

More stuff! Make the Instant OS to allow writing to a hard drive, usb flash memory or usb/firewire attached drive! Also, with the ability to update it and customize it to the users apps. Without these two add-ons its just a waste of resources. So this idea will only apply if its allows for writing to media (all) and being able to update it. 37 Comments »

Bundle Splashtop to Dell Laptop/Desktop

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by fjordan Apr 21

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Dell bundles Splashtop Instant-on/Instant-off OS to its laptop/desktop offerings?

Aren't most of you feel the pain of having to wait forever for Windows to boot-up or shutdown or even going in/out of hibernation?
Given that most of us (90%+) are web surfers, skype, messenger users and media playback, believe Splashtop can take care these exact needs ... It would be lame if Dell don't pursue this aggressively to take back the No.1 spot that's taken by HP recently...

Honestly speaking, I never liked HP laptop/desktop design, no matter how many awards they have won recently... okay, it's fair to say that Dell is like consumer car and Mac is the more luxury ones, but we all deserve as speed/fastness... believe there are many souls out there longing for an instant-on/off type of env that we can do mostly what can do...

let's pitch Dell on this... 2 Comments »

PCs With Embedded Internet Capability

Broadband and Mobility submitted by bogdano2 05/18/07

When my hard drive crashed my Dell was unusable for days while I awaited replacement.

I kept thinking that if only I could just browse the Internet from my machine, I wouldn't feel so trapped.

I have seen many devices with embeded Internet capability including phones; adding this baseline functionality is certainly within Dell's capabilities...

We would never accept a cell phone that occasionally did not boot; in fact all PCs could provide baseline Internet Phone (VOIP) capability and notebooks could provide baseline cell phone capability; all available without a wokring hard drive!

Benefits to all of us include:
- No media to carry EVER!
- Perpetually useful device (as opposed to the doorstop a PC becomes when you cant boot to the traditionally installed OS's).
- A hybrid device that could be used as a phone, media player, or any service that all cell phone companies already provide.
- A truly serviceable device that Dell could fix remotely without making me part of the troubleshooting process !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I think I could have had better luck with my Dell technician as I went through the troubleshooting process if I had had Internet capability. After all, only my hard drive had failed, my network card, video, etc. were still functional.

I won't go into the OS re-install hell that I had to go through after the replacement drive arrived but again, with embedded Internet access, I think much could be done by Dell to improve even this aspect... 46 Comments »

Something like Asus's "Splashtop" fast-booting secure web-surfing environment.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by jmxz May 19

Asus is putting their
Splashtop environment in all their new motherboards.

Splashtop is described by DeviceVM as a "secure web-surfing environment", and is embedded on motherboards so that it can be booted within seconds, as an alternative to booting up a full operating system. ...

"In response to great user feedback, our plan is to proliferate Express Gate across our entire motherboard-product portfolio, ...

"Consumers want to turn their PCs on and off like any other appliance"

I'd very much like to simply turn my Dell's on and off like any other appliance, and be able to instantly launch a web browser without even having to wait for a hard disk to spin up. 2 Comments »
