Offer Solid State Hard Drive with more Capacity and lower price

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nsenman May 16

I think solid state drives are way too overpriced and not large enough for the amount of storage people need now a days. People would love to have the 100+ GB of storage Hard Drives along with a less expensive price, comparable to the current SATA. 3 Comments »

offer ergonomic keyboards at discounted rate

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by ro_bro May 29

RSI is increasingly an issue these days with computer users. You should offer ergonomic keyboards (slanted kinds like the microsoft natural keyboards) at a discounted rate (somewhere like 15% below retail), using your leverage to buy them at a high volume.

Team up with keyboard makers like Microsoft or Logitech.

I'm surprised that Dell only sells the straight keyboards...

This would really show that Dell cares about the users, and is aware of RSI being a big issue. Comment »

STOP MERGING until you get an Unmerge feature.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz May 21

Wow - the merges get stranger and stranger. Today we see the idea
"Use Hardware with Open Sourced Drivers" merged with the idea "Have Ubuntu on Dell One"
. For whomever merged these, do you realize that the Dell One is a model of Dell computer, and as far as I can tell has nothing at all to do with Open Sourced Drivers?

That's perhaps even worse than the idea for a 20" laptop being merged with an idea for a desktop-with-built-in-printer, and even worse than the idea requesting packaged software sold on Dell's web site being merged with an idea requesting easier to find links to hardware on the web site

This Idea is to stop merging until IdeaStorm has a working Unmerge feature so the admins can undo the rather silly merges that seem to be happening more and more. 11 Comments »

Stop Advertising Windows Vista On Your Linux Pages

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 11

A while ago I noticed the Latitude XT promotional demo video in the Linux section of the Dell community page. And questioned it's relevance then. In the open source page on Dell.com Dell is still trying to steer open source users back to Windows.

The Latitude XT is a Microsoft Windows only product and is not offered with Ubuntu or any other form of Linux so far as i know. In fact the demo video shows the Latitude XT running Windows Vista. Please stop badgering open source users and stop hounding them with this Windows Vista nonsense. We've already decided we're not interested. 7 Comments »

Don't abbreviate date information

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern May 24

Sometimes, the IdeaStorm platform shows dates as "20 Minutes ago" or "May 30th". I'd like them to be showed always in a consistent format, which might help improve usability of the site. The format could be something like this: "2008-05-25 01:56 UTC". If you prefer another timezone, please don't forget to also signify the timezone. Other formats would be fine, too, as long as they are consistent across the site and don't fail to convey significant information.

Thank you. 6 Comments »

Notebook ports on the back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by falbert May 22

Am I the only one that hates having ports of anykind on the sides of my notebook. I like my ports out of sight in the back.
Maybe the headphone jack in the front and a few USB ports on the sides at the back.
I would suggest dropping : parralel, serial, pcmcia, infrared, mic input (integrate it in or use bluetooth) and the modem (who uses 56k modems today???) 10 Comments »

Make a touchpad Vostro Notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by ccpljat May 27

I think a lot of small businesses would like to see a computer geared specifically toward small businesses that has the capability of a touch screen. This seems to be the future of computing, what with Microsoft Touch and the mobile touch devices. You could even make it an option to add to the already available Vostro 1310. This shouldn't be terribly difficult. 1 Comment »

Ubuntu Linux systems Down Under

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by finkisadink May 10

At present it's not possible to buy a Dell system with Linux preinstalled within Australia. This is something that I believe should be resolved as soon as practicable — at present I'm having to buy systems with Windows preinstalled, only to never use that license... and this also costs me time & money as I have to perform a full SOE build from scratch. 6 Comments »

CUSTOMIZATION PROCESS - IMPROVED

Dell Web Site submitted by pablohs May 21

This idea is more philosophical than anything else, but I think it will give a fresh uncluttered look and feel to dell.com website. Start the customization process with just three options; 1) A Laptop, 2) A desktop, 3) A server (three pictures in the web page) – Dell has five lines of laptops and five lines of desktops, but as a customer I don’t even care how you call the laptops (XPS, Latitude, etc.) (It is just a laptop). For example if I choose a laptop let me pick among ALL the processors that you offer, then let me pick my memory from 1 to 8GB, then the size of my screen and HD, etc… Let me customize what I really care (my user requirements). When I finish customizing my laptop I may have narrowed my options to only one laptop in one production line (such an XPS) or multiple laptops in different lines but that should be the end of the customization process not the beginning. Allow operating system CHOICE

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by rahbm Apr 9

Please make the operating system a priced option on EVERY PC, so that people know how much they are paying, and for what.

This will allow Ubuntu users to buy any system, as opposed to the limited range now, increasing sales.

This will not disadvantage Windows purchasers; they can simply tick the box for XP or Vista, and have a choice not available now.

This will also open up sales to those who want NO operating system, so that they can load their own. So far I have always bought 'white-box' PCs, but would like the ability to buy a real brand-name PC with support and warranty.

Simplified ordering (just pick the PC), with more potential customers!

Thank you for your consideration. 2 Comments »

Audio Recording

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by moonunit7 May 26

I would like to know why DELL can't build a laptop and desktop that only caters for multi track audio recording? There is a huge untapped market out there and I don't know off any other company that targets this market. We all want to make audio recordings sound as good as the big million dollar recording studios and the place to start is by getting a proper computer. I mean... if you can build a laptop and desktop specifically for mindless computer games, why can't you do it for audio recording as well?

If you look at companies like M-audio, Cubase, Presonus, MOTU, Native Instruments etc... You’ll realize just how big the market is out there for capturing audio but that there is no laptop that is build to do just that – record audio without any hassles. For example I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve wasted (and am still wasting) to find a laptop with a Texas instruments firewire chipset, so that my external audio interface can work smoothly with the laptop.

Just my 5 cents... 9 Comments »

Sell AC adapters at retail stores

Advertising and Marketing, Laptop Power submitted by undead999 May 7

Since Dell is selling computers at retail outlets offer ac adapters for laptops at best buy, staples and anywhere you sell laptops. Also offer ac adapters at your kiosks.

AC adapter usually fail without warning, waiting days or weeks for a replacement AC adapter is not always an option for many users. Generic adapters dont always work on Dells, in addition many are underpowered espicially for 17 inch models Comment »

re-use of shipping boxes

Environment submitted by parasite May 25

Shipping boxes for desktop computers and monitors are the perfect size and durability for small animals to use as a place to sleep & play. Or you can spend a few hours and go overboard like I did--anyway, it's better than sending more boxes to a landfill.

Only supported stuff on linux laptops/desktops

Linux, Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by alexanthony May 28

I just tried to customise an ubuntu laptop (UK site) and saw that I could add a printer which I am unsure if it supports linux (says Windows 98/XP/Vista). It can't be too hard to make it clear whether or not this printer is supported, and if not, it shouldn't be advertised when customising an ubuntu system.

I also discovered that I could buy Norton Internet Security for it. Does a linux version really exist? No. Should I be able to buy it as part of a linux system? No.

Someone could get really confused when they try to use "supported" accessories and software then realise that they're not... 10 Comments »

show the picture of the actual mouse included

Dell Web Site submitted by ro_bro May 29

on your dell website for home, you can't see the picture of the actual mouse you're going to get. No matter what you select, you see a generic image of what seems like an old ps2 mouse.

Can we see what we're actually going to get?

Also, I like for example, tigerdirect.com. They actually have numerous pictures of what you're going to get, at different angles, etc. You see everything in the box.

I wish dell would do the same, or something similar, rather than showing generic images. 2 Comments »

Allow Canadians to order from Dell.com (USA)

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by junior May 24

Allow Canadians to order Electronics, Software, & Accessories from Dell.com (USA). What I mean is Dell.com has more Software, Electronics and Accessories than Dell.ca has. Say you want a high end wireless router that you see on Dell.com, and your a Canadian, you check Dell.ca if its there, and its not, which is pretty stupid and makes me abit mad. Dell.com should allow Canadians to order from their website. In check out of Dell.com, if a Canadian sees something he likes and its not on Dell.ca, there should be a tab on Dell.com in the shopping cart of check out and delivery, it should say Canada, but United States by Default because its a US website, and once the shipping address is changed to Canada, the price should change to a Canadian price.

Promote please.

Dell.ca does not have everything that Dell.com has. 3 Comments »
