Improve the look of Inspiron laptops by removing some of the rubber nubs from the screen.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by jervis961 07/24/07

Those rubber nubs around the screen are so ugly. How can Dell remove them from the XPS m1330 but not the Inspiron? They could at lease remove some of them or make them blend in more. How many do you really need?

12.1" Inspiron

Inspiron products submitted by migizi 07/24/07

I think there should be a 12.1" Inspiron notebook. I have a 700m and my wife has an XPS 1210. I want to see another upgrade to the 12.1" line. If I could get 12.1" with a dedicated graphics card and the color options of the Inspiron line I will upgrade my system. Offer it with the LED back light as well this will make it an excellent ultra portal laptop. The ability to get 5 hours of battery life with normal tasks and about 3 playing games is great. Dell needs ultra portal laptops that are not part of the XPS line, cheap, good quality Inspiron is the way to go. Not everyone wants a 6lbs laptop or large screen. I would like to have the option of an AMD processor. 4 Comments »

Paginate Comments

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 07/24/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Some ideas have hundreds of comments. The pages are very long and it's annoying having to scroll all the way down every time. And I can't imagine how difficult it must be if you use a screen reader to try and get through them all. (Not that IdeaStorm actually works with a screen reader at all).

Can we please have comments in multiple pages once there's a lot of them, instead of one long list? It's just common sense - this must be the only website in the world that doesn't put them on multiple pages.

(It'll be easier on your server too. I mean look at this idea: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/61771
The whole page is well over a megabyte download every time you want to submit or edit a comment.)
Ideas with a high volume of comments are paginated every 100 comments. Page navigation can be found at the top and bottom of an idea. Read more about this here .

Dell should buy Lenevo, and shut it down

Sales Strategies submitted by izach 07/24/07

Lenevo is running behind the top three PC leading companies i.e. HP, Dell, and Acer. Dell should buy Lenevo on the dime, and offer its customers a replacement (for a very low price) laptop. 20 Comments »

Make your announcements easily acessable on the Dell sites.

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 07/25/07

I just found an article about dell at Ububtu Live 2007 by doing an online search but couldn't find the information anywhere on Dell.com, direct2dell or here.

Dell knows it won't happen overnight, but along side wanting to ship audio/video codecs, Intel Wireless 80.211N support for Linux, Broadcom Wireless for Linux, and being able to ship notebooks and desktops with Compiz Fusion enabled, Dell would like to see improved ATI Linux drivers. At Ubuntu Live 2007, Amit Bhutani had a session on Ubuntu Linux for Dell Consumer Systems, where he had shared a slide with Dell's "area of investigation", which Amit had said is essentially their Linux road-map. Amit had also stated that the NVIDIA 2D and 3D video drivers were "challenges in platform enablement". Dell wants to offer ATI Linux systems, but first the driver must be improved for the Linux platform (not necessarily open-source, but improved). Dell currently ships desktop Linux systems with Intel using their open-source drivers as well as NVIDIA graphics processors under Linux. Amit had went on to add that new Dell product offerings and availability in other countries will come later this summer.

Dell Rapid Response

Sales Strategies submitted by geeteethree 07/25/07

Dell built a company on:-
- streamlining the supply chain
- utilising call centres
- ultimately lowering the cost of the commodity

But where to from here:-
- extending the model into home electronics didn’t work
- the core market isn’t growing fast enough to keep shareholders happy

The answer of course is services, but:-
- Dell is no IBM
- High-end services require high-end credibility and big investments in headcount.

But what about low-end services:-
- the PC Maintenance and Network maintenance market is fractured, just like the PC supply market was when Dell entered.
- Dell already has the call centres, the supply chain and in many cases the personnel.
- Do it not just for Dell hardware out of warranty but everything.

But how to expand rapidly:-
- Every city has its small business of 20-50 people started by a small business person and servicing this market. Buy them.
- Some of the large IT vendors view this market as too hard – buy their divisions.

How to brand it – Dell Rapid Response:-
- call centre
- servicing
- network and IT consulting

Why will it work:-
- the technicians will become Dell salespeople
- customers trust Dell and the Dell brand is associated with speed and efficiency. 11 Comments »

Headphone jacks in all speakers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by bernard_marx 07/25/07

In a business environment it is often important to have speakers for some uses, but there are other times when people are just listening to music, and therefore shoulkd be using headphones so as not to disturb others. The Dell A225 speakers, which seem to be the main option these days do NOT have a headphone jack.

Please create a line of speakers that do have a headphone jack.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Should Apple licence OS X to Dell? | Bigmouth Strikes Again - Freelance journalist Gary Marshall on technology, the Internet, music, Macs and more

Operating Systems submitted by pwalker 01/30/07

There was an interesting op-ed by Doug Mohney in The Inquirer yesterday, which suggested that the launch of Vista provides a good opportunity for Apple - if it licences OS X to Dell.

However, Vista is being beaten like a dead horse by the mass media – most of them already are enthralled to the God of Jobs if you read between the lines, so Microsoft could make nuclear fusion work tomorrow and they’d give it a lukewarm review at best. The consensus view out of the babbling punditry is “Don’t buy Vista today, unless you have to buy a new computer tomorrow.”

On that front, I think the babbling pundits are right. Heh.

So what about Apple?

If Apple was serious, and I mean really serious, about gaining more PC market share, they’d realize they need to license/sell their operating system to another hardware manufacturer or two. Sure, Apple’s tried the license route before with mixed results, but it’s about time to bite the bullet, look into the mirror, and realize they should try something bold.

Apple should license their operating system to Dell.

Mohney isn’t suggesting that Apple should make OS X available to any PC user; the dangers of that (such as hardware incompatibilities or really crap machines ruining Apple’s reputation) have been talked to death for years. Rather, he’s suggesting that Apple could team up with a single PC manufacturing firm to make decent clones, expanding OS X’s market share without diluting the core Apple brand. It wouldn’t be an Apple Mac: it’d be a Dell Mac. Dell’s good at churning out PCs, so if Apple laid down strict criteria about what should and shouldn’t go into a clone you could get decent non-Apple Macs competing in different markets to Apple Macs. Does anyone really think Dell is capable of making something as sexy as a MacBook or as iconic as the iMac?

I’m sure Mohney will be inundated with angry emails, but I do wonder how many of the senders will have reacted similarly to suggestions a few years back that Macs should run Intel chips. I think his idea’s fascinating. 48 Comments »

Create and market a Dell HTPC (Home Theater PC)

New Product Ideas submitted by hephaestus 07/05/07

Dell should create and market a Home Theater PC. There are a lot of HTPC offerings out there from other vendors and Dell already pushes Windows Media Center Edition pretty hard, why not design a small and sleek (read low-profile, small footprint) PC for the living room entertainment center. It'd be a great tie-in for the Dell HDTV line-up. And don't just make a little PC, make it cool, stylish and smart. Make sure it has all the competitive features: bluetooth, 802.11n wireless, full-feature remote, slot-loading DVD player, external power brick to keep the size down, etc... Don't just offer it with Windows MCE, try marketing it with MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org/) or some other open-source derivative. 3 Comments »

Chat support as good as phone support with ability to "transfer"

Service and Support submitted by jaylus12 07/11/07

Every department should have a chat support, and one chat agent should be able to forward you to another chat agent.

I like the online chat because I don't have to make a lot of noise on the phone in the office, I can multitask, and there is a printed "receipt" of the entire conversation when I'm done, however since I don't feel that I'm getting equivalent service on the chat, I generally phone in. Comment »

M1330 Resolution & Graphic Card Options

Laptops submitted by mstauff 07/07/07

Everynotebook monitor should have an optional resolution of at least 1440x900 and a an option for a graphics card with at least 256 MB ram to take advantage of all Vista graphics options. The screen resolution on the new M1330 does not keep up with the resolution on Sony's small notebook and 128 MB graphics card will not do a very good job of supporting Vista wiht all graphics options turned on and all the way up. 2 Comments »
