Sell ink cartridges at local retail

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by guardianxps 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

So, for convenience and ease of access, can Dell sell ink cartridges through local retail stores? I realize Dell is an online store; and not suggesting you stop the online part, but also make it available through retail stores. Considering weather or other natural occurrences, and the latest discomfort from DHL leaving the ink cartridges on the door just to be stolen gets annoying.

We now sell ink cartridges at Staples. Click here for more details

Replace the Windows key with the Dell key

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by mistern 06/11/07

There've been all these ideas that Dell should get rid of the Windows key. BAH! Criticists...

You should replace the Windows key with a key with the Dell logo. This is more advertisement for you and more satisfaction to fanatics.

Now if this isn't a good deal! 6 Comments »

Replace the Keyboard's Windows key with the Easy Key

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jorge 06/11/07

Dell replace the hated and useless windows key with the Easy Key which is what all your complaining, nagging, whinning customers want even if they can't verbalize it.

Its red color will aid in tech support helping users identify the easy key and it will make all users feel good when pressing it, there will be some technical issues in jamming it in place but it will be well worth it. 11 Comments »

Save energy: Beep when your battery is full

Environment, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by pkchen 06/11/07

I know a lot of people who when charging their laptops, leave the laptop plugged in even after the battery is fully recharged. This definitely wastes a lot of power!

Maybe Dell could build in an alert system (a kind beep every 30 minutes maybe?) to remind the user that their battery is full and they can unplug their notebook from the wall socket.

I know that Nokia is going to be building in this same functionality into some of their cell phones ... check the press release: http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1125979"Nokia has launched the first mobile phones to include alerts encouraging people to unplug the charger once the battery is full, a move that could save enough electricity to power 85,000 homes a year."

Think of all the power we could save with just a simple beep! :)

Turn off Vista's indexing service

Operating Systems, Software submitted by jmxz 06/11/07

Vista's indexing service is a drain on resources for customers who prefer a different desktop

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070610-google-launches-antitrust-compl...

Google months ago filed a confidential complaint with the Justice Department, asking that Microsoft be forced to alter Vista's desktop search behavior on antitrust grounds.

The complaint says that Vista's indexing service cannot easily be turned off and creates a drag on system resources when operating at the same time as rival indexers, like the one in Google Desktop Search. Google argues that this behavior is anticompetitive, and several state Attorneys General seem willing to pursue the issue.

Idea: turn it off by default; and let users choose which indexing service they want turned on themselves - either at the time of purchase or when they get the system. 16 Comments »

Dell preinstall Google Indexing service

Software submitted by mistern 06/11/07

Dell should pre-install the Google Desktop search services, for three reasons:

  1. They are just the best (indexing service).

  2. Google pays good money.
  3. Google software is no crapware, it's quality work.

Am I Crazy?

IdeaStorm submitted by markzac 06/11/07

All,

I just found IdeaStorm and love the idea, but had a question.

Is the registration for this site "unsecure". It doesn't appear to have Secure Sockets (https) as the url string.

Can't someone grab our email addresses, passwords, etc?

Would Dell and Salesforce really allow this?

Power Supplies

Gaming submitted by bawambold 05/30/07

I would like to see the option for your power supply. The Dimensions are great computers but no one can build a gaming p.c. on its 325 watt power supply nor is the 375 watt power supply in the XPS 410 very ample. Something in the 450 to 500 range would be much better suited and gamers would not mind paying the little bit extra. 5 Comments »

High end Multimedia PC ..

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by emacsuser 06/06/07

Attention Michael Dell:

Dell/Ubuntu a good idea. But Dell should put Linux MCE on very high spec hardware and sell it to the general public as a digital VCR Media player. That way you get to sell the more expensive hardware and make more money. Comment »

Broaden the amount of products on display at Dell Direct Stores

Dell submitted by joeevil5000 06/07/07

Being a DDS employee, I have had the oprotunity to show the product to my customers before they buy, but, I have also sold products I have never touched, or even seen. Dell needs to add a few more products to DDS kisoks simply to show the customers the big picture. While Dell does have over 30,000 items on dell.com, I should be able to get the feel of ALL of thier desktops and notebooks. Case in point, I have never actually seen A Dimension C521, XPS 720, XPS 1710, or XPS 2010. Especially the high end machines, if the customer can at least see them, we may just sell a few more of them. 8 Comments »

Dell: Offer OPTIONAL Dual-boot Linux and Windows - on your new Ubuntu systems!

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies submitted by phubert 06/01/07

Other suppliers of primarily LINUX systems (Pogolinux, for example) offer this.

If you wish to compete with existing 2nd tier suppliers who are clearly responding to their own customers' requests, you should offer dual-boot configurations.

Depending on what systems you offer, DEVELOPERS will be among those buying.

Virtualization (along with such as CrossOver Office) is one approach, but dual boot isn't going away yet!

I believe more are likely to try your Linux PC offers if they can have dual-boot as well.

**

Let me suggest XP Pro or a higher-end Vista (since XP won't continue to be _available_ to you TO offer).

**

Since this refers specifically to the new Ubuntu systems, it is not a duplicate suggestion.

**
2007-08-09
Clearly, Dell's latest statements about their directions in support of virtualization could easily make THIS suggestion moot.

I think a round of applause is due Dell for this! 21 Comments »

Waterproof Notebooks

Laptops submitted by coriedwards 06/06/07

Please create a waterproof notebook in which a user can take to the pool, beach, or will survive if water/coffee is spilt across the keyboard.

Also, please create a notebook line for kids (definitely waterproof) - both high end and low end. 6 Comments »

Show a little Tux (the penguin) right to each component known to be compatible with (a specified brand of) Linux

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by mistern 06/04/07

Even when buying computers with Windows pre-installed, many people would like to know if their computer would be fully compatible with Linux. Of course, this logo would have to be specific to a very certain distribution of Linux, I would suggest Ubuntu 7.04 (or the latest version of it).

Show a greyed out penguin if a component has limited compatibility with Linux, for example WLAN cards that need their Windows drivers to work.

Added to increased customer satisfactory, another good reason for you (DELL) would be that you could sell more, say, sound cards.

You could also add a little BSD demon to indicate (Free)BSD compatibility.

This is idea is related to 67943: State Linux Compatibility of All PCs Preloaded with Windows As Well As All Peripherals. 12 Comments »

Give Dell consumer products names, not product numbers...

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Desktops, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by kyliemanders 06/08/07

I received the June Dell catalog in the mail a few days ago and while it is impressive I can't but think how much better it would be if I could remember Dell products by name rather than dozens of product numbers.

I understand that Dimension, Optiplex and Inspiron are brands but give your individual products names...

Instead of marketing a Dell Inspiron E1705, why not a Dell IdeaBook or Dell Book. Much friendlier and happier association between human and machine.

How many would be excited about an Apple Dimension E1423 laptop... We have too many numbers to remember in our lives as it is.

Add a "already completed" category to IdeaStorm so people can self-label their own ideas completed.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 06/09/07

I think completed ideas should not be "Delete Requests" because it's quite useful to see that many ideas are indeed completed.

However with so many ideas, it would be a monumental effort for any one person to mark all the completed ideas completed. So let the community help.

1. Add a "COMPLETED REQUESTS" category similar to the existing "DELETE REQUESTS" feature so people can flag their own ideas as completed.

2. Add "Report competed" links similar to the existing "Report abuse" feature so people can flag other people's ideas as completed.

I note that at least a 3 of my old ideas - and many dozen's of other people's ideas that I see - were completed but not labeled as such - and I think it'd make people feel pretty good about IdeaStorm if they can see a category that shows these completed ideas. 4 Comments »

Offer In-Home trouble shooting/repair for Consumer and Small Business

Service and Support submitted by technikal 06/08/07

Provide a for-fee option for consumer and small business customers to request a technician to come to their home or office to diagnose and fix issues. Right now, this is offered when and in-warranty system is determined to have a covered hardware related problem. However, most issues aren't hardware related, many users don't have the time or expertise to do significant trouble shooting, and there are a significant number of machines that are out of warranty, but still very usable. If the technician comes out and determines the problem is a warranty issue, give the customer some kind of credit

Set up a for-fee service that will allow folks like us to get the service we need from Dell. Right now, if my PC breaks and is out-of-warranty I don't have time to do the diagnostics, my best option is to call the "Geek Squad". I'd prefer to have it fixed by the people I bought it from. 6 Comments »

Lease Option for Home Computers

Environment submitted by markflacy 06/08/07

Provide a lease arrangement for non-commercial customers who would turn in their system at the end of a 2 or 3-year term for a new upgrade. This would ensure that all equipment goes back to Dell for recycling, disassembly, reuse, etc. Dell would retain ownership of the equipment, like a leased vehicle, so that the customer would never have to deal with disposal, replacement of faulty equipment, etc. Customer would get a discount coupon on the upgrade upon turning in the old equipment.

Equipment could be returned to retail outlets (Circuit City, Best Buy, Fry's, CompUSA) with whom Dell has a relationship, and customers could pickup their pre-ordered new equipment at the same time, either a new lease or purchase. This would also eliminate much of the shipping packaging.

Or if the customer prefers, could have the new equipment shipped to their home and return the old equipment in the packaging from the new system. The customer would then receive their discount/rebate upon Dell receiving the old equipment. Comment »

Establish Show Room

Advertising and Marketing submitted by choo_hoo_neoh 06/07/07

Dell should establish a show room on major city, because some of the customer prefer to buy something they can touch (to be more confident on product) and also they can cash and carry, instead of wait for few days of delivery. 5 Comments »

Dell Web Site submitted by praneeth 06/07/07

Dell website is giving hard time, am trying to order a laptop for last couple of hrs using my DPA. Response is poor many a time, does not work some times. Even the order status info is out for last few days. What a horrible experience. Looks like dell is discouraging direct customers for Channels.. 3 Comments »
