Improve Product Design

LCD 1)Improve LCD design! I have to say the new 27" is a winner in terms of designs and price but why not improve further such as this LG where all cables can be plugged into an external port hidden elswhere under your table?
Notebooks- 1)Improve the simple things = lid lock & locations of ports ! I hate the latitude lid lock on the side. it always comes off when u slide your notebook into your bag, waking up the system and drains all the power
2)the USB ports of the side is also poorly designed as not all USB sockets can fit thanks to the laptop design.
3)Keyboards- all dell laptops keyboards FLEX in some areas. Need to fix this.
4)built in subwoofer to your mainstream laptops!

22" UltraBright Monitor w/ the 2407 features
Monitors and Displays submitted by oxfdblue

In short, the 2407 is awesome- from it's picture quality to all the built in features. but it is too big for many desktops out there. How about a 22" version? I know there is a 22" model, but it's not an UltraBright display, it doesn't have the build-in card reader, and the sound bar that goes with the 22" model is rather weak. Speaking of the sound bar, I would raise the output a bit and add the capability to hook up a subwoofer to it as well. A 22" monitor like that would fit perfectly on a lot more desktops, and help clear aways stand alone speakers and card readers for those who wish. I also would think that it would knock a bit off the price as well, making more affordable for more people. Anyway, just some thoughts. Thanks.

Legacy Hardware - Say goodbye
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mkmaster78

If Dell becomes sort of the face for prebuilt Linux computers, maybe they could make the push for something thats been needed for a while... removing Linux's unwieldy dependency on Legacy hardware. I so sick of buying new computer parts that are no longer Legacy (because Legacy has really been kind of dead for some time) and not have them work or work right in Linux because of it. Any push forward on this would be a great step.

Use DisplayPort

I read something on your website: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/innovation/en/cto_display_... About a "DisplayPort" thing that you can connect power, USB and display in a all in one digital interface, great idea, i agree that monitor connection needs a new technology. Now you need to use that technology, get it through development and get it out there before another company (like apple) will snatch it up and it will be the "next big thing".
But when it is developed make it able to transfer a lot of info and have UPnP. Make it so that your monitor can have a display, USB ports, web cam, microphone, speakers and a disc drive (yes, that's right implement a disc drive [HD DVD or Blue-ray] into the monitor so that the tower can be stashed under a desk, but still has the ability to be taken apart and add something like a bigger hard drive or something). Also (maybe) make it so that your monitor can be powered by that cord too, so that there is only one cord. If not and in your tests you end up with melted motherboards, two cords is still pretty good.
But the point is that you should get that all into effect soon and than I think that this could be the next big thing.
PS - Make sure people know about it, ADVERTISE IT!!!

22" WUXGA Widescreen LCD

I would like to see a widescreen 22" WUXGA LCD with full 1080p support. at least 2ms response time and 2000:1 or more contrast ratio. The current 22" screens have a maximum native resolution of WSXGA 1680x1050 which is not enough to view the new standard in HD content.

Better connectivity on monitors!
Dell, Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas submitted by maverick4ever

Something that is sadly lacking in monitors is good connectivity. Especially on large monitors, let's say 22 inches and up, this is a real shame.
Some people may already have a PC that has a TV tuner and are planning on getting a big screen. The question is, why buy a monitor when you get much better connectivity with a TV. On the other hand, if you have a TV tuner, you could still view and record TV on the monitor and get the many advantages in picture quality. Unfortunately this leaves you without all the other functions that a conventional TV would offer. Because of the lack of inputs, you can't connect multiple A/V devices to the monitor simultaneously, some not at all. For instance you might own an Xbox360 Elite or a PS3 and you want to hook it up with HDMI. I haven't seen a single decent monitor on the market that offers HDMI. You also might have a plethora of A/V equipment; an old VCR, a DVD player, a few game consoles, a camcorder, a cable or satellite box, ect...
You really would need many connectors in your monitor to make them all work at the same time. If you could have a monitor with Component, Composite, HDMI, S-Video, Optical and/or Coaxial S/PDIF Digital Sound connectors and maybe even SCART for the Europeans, you'd be all set, so long as you have a functioning TV Tuner in your PC. Meanwhile you would get superior picture quality over an HDTV and you would save a bit of money too. Throw in a remote and it's all you would ever need.
Now, of course many would say that you should just get a TV rather than a monitor, if you had this demanding needs. But like I stated, you would lose the superior picture quality. And it likely would cost you more.
So please Dell, take the initiative in this matter and fill the space in the market of versatile PC monitors.

Nice new monitor Dell in the E248WFP 24 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor. But why only the DVI and VGA inputs? S-Video and Composite Video inputs please! An adjustable height stand would also be nice. HDMI and a couple of USB ports would really make the product a dream.
Also, please make available to order with new desktop systems, especially Inspirons.
Thanks!

Bring the 22-inch SP2208WFP to the USA
Monitors and Displays submitted by coachcg

Please bring this beauty stateside and make available with desktop systems ASAP. I personally don't need the webcam, but it has other great specs and has the connectors/inputs a lot of us are asking for:
It's not out in the US yet, but Dell just announced another webcam packing LCD monitor: the SP2208WFP for Japan. This 1,680 x 1,050 resolution 22-incher features a 2 megapixel webcam and microphone integrated flush with the upper bezel, a 2-ms response, 2,000:1 contrast, and the ability to reproduce 92% of the NTSC color gamut. Inputs? Oh heck yes: analog D-Sub 15, DVI-D (with HDCP), 3x HDMI, and 4x USB. Japan-only for the time being for a tax-inclusive price of ¥59,800 or about $510 whenever it pops Stateside. They've also announced a ¥68,800 ($587) 24-inch E248WFP prepped for a Japan release on October 23rd. This 1,920 × 1,200 model increases the color gamut from the 72% found in their current 24-incher to the same 92% found in the new SP2208WFP. HDMI, HDMI, by God almighty, HDMI

HP has had it on their notebooks for 1 year now. Come on Dell! What's it going to take to put in an HDMI port? Most of the new LCD TV's today input HDMI.
And I'm surprised that the new XPS 1730 has no HDMI port. DVI is so yesterday and is not forward thinking at all.
Your next generation Montevina based models MUST have HDMI.
And yes, this is a dupe. A dupe of my own post even. But I want to buy a Dell. But without HDMI, it makes it difficult.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript
08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself. On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...
It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.
thanks =D

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas
Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen
09/22/07 **REVIEWED**
One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.
Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".
I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?
Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.
