Fashionable Dell
Laptops submitted by sboudon

Laptop design is an important factor for customer appreciation, even geeks dislike ugly looks.
Some ideas:
- pink interchangeable cover and wrist pad/keyboard... for a girlie look - aluminum or any other light alloy cases... for execs - black resistant plastic... for No-logo adopters - Brown case, with Nautilus stripes... for Ubuntu freaks - Orange stripes... for, you name it etc...
Would you like a car brand, where cars come only in white color? Would like a car with a black interior which turns grayish when using the seats, just because the paint doesn't last?
Use colors in the plastic, not painted plastic... use colors, not only grey and black outfits.
Throw out all the stickers... Make your products to be THE most loved product anybody wants to own, inspire yourself from the best mobile phone producers (i.e. Nokia for example), which manages to sell the same product several times just because they came out with a fashionable look... People love displaying their phones on a table, what about a laptop?

Better Troubleshooting/Support Site
Service and Support submitted by ardor
05/05/07
support.dell.com is an "OK" troubleshooting site. If I have issues with a Dell, I can go to that page and ATTEMPT to fix my issue. The problem is that it is not well organized!!! Or structured!!!
IMPROVEMENT: Don't make me enter in my service tag. Its hard enough to reach as it is! Let me, from support.dell.com, do a search for my problem. Don't make me click MULTIPLE times JUST to get an idea of what my issue is, but no answer.
Essentially, make a database with many ways to fix different issues available to home consumers who do own a Dell PC. Having to navigate and click on multiple links only frustrates me. The information I end up getting is not really that informative but time consuming and frustrating to go through allllll those steps to have it tell you to call your helpdesk and than they tell me that its going to cost a substantial amount of money to fix. Isn't there an easier/cheaper way!?

Make longer lasting batteries for better portability
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice
05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**
Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery.
Basic laptops: at least 2 1/2 hours battery life Entertainment laptops: at least 3 1/2 hours battery life XPS laptops: at least 4 1/2 hours battery life

Dell Connect
Software submitted by dford
05/05/07 **REVIEWED**
Before customers utilize the Dell Connect utility technicians are required to have them navigate through support.dell.com and read the terms and conditions before assistance is rendered. An considerable inconvenience for clients that previously utilized Dell Connect is the requirement to have them navigate back to support.dell.com and read over the teams and conditions for usage for this utile. A possible solution is have the terms and agreements embedded into the Dell Connect software making it mandatory for clients to read terms and conditions of product usage before allowing a technician the ability to remotely access to a system and perform technical assistance. Also having something to the extent of a utility update which can send out update policies and GUI designs.
We currently have options for our agents that help them guide customers to a faster connection and quicker issue resolution, and we continue to investigate other alternatives to optimize the overall process.

Dont eliminate XP just yet
Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP. Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.

Student Discounts!
Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt
02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**
Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy.

No Extra Software Option
Software submitted by ootleman

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.
Check out jeremy_f's update on our current software options.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
Software submitted by robinjfisher
02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart
02/17/07
Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.
