All 17" notebooks should have a numeric keypad.

Laptops submitted by winoffice Jun 13

I own a Dell Vostro 1700 notebook PC. I especially like the fact that it has an numeric keypad.

I also plan to purchase a Dell Precision M6300 notebook PC in the near future. I like most about it, but I do have a problem with the fact that it lacks a numeric keypad. If you can include a numeric keypad on the 1700, then why not on the M6300? I am certain that both are large enough to include one, since they both measure 17" in screen size. Include a numeric keypad on the 6300, and I will buy it! 2 Comments »

XPS CD/DVD Holder (Black Notebook) Embossing

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by taskman Jun 14

Hi,

Received the XPS Laptop and with it cane the folder for storing the CD/DVD's and manuals.

The embossing on the front is nice, however, whenever you create something that is to stand up on a shelf as this appears to be, the (Side) should also be embossed with the XPS.
That will make it easily readable when it is on a shelf and surrounded by other thing like books.

Something like

X
P
S

Take Care

Include a touch sensitive screen on your new linux powered sub-notebooks!

Linux, Laptops submitted by shrewduser Jun 14

Touch sensitive screens cost next to nothing, especially when its done by the manufacturer at scale. YI think they have an important role to play on the new generation of utlra portable linux based devices.

Touch sensitivity means being able to quickly jot down notes all over your powerpoint slides at university, playing touch sensitive games which are particularly suited to mobile devices, as well as a myriad of other exsisting tasks currently handled by other things (usually a pen and paper). 1 Comment »

Modify the Trackpad design clearing the buttons at the bottom

Laptops submitted by casiciaco Jun 14

Instead of the classical trackpad with the two buttons in the bottom, move the left button to the left and the right button to the right, clearing the bottom. In this way, the trackpad height is increased. It would also be necessary to expand the horizontal size of the trackpad in order to get bigger and more confortable trackpads. 3 Comments »

Clear Side Panel for XPS 630

XPS products submitted by graper Jun 15

i feel that a side panel view, would be a great item to add to the xps 630, this is because you offer it to the 730 and 720. I want to make my desktop look better with this. This item will save me from cuting a hole in the side of my case and doing it myself. Please consider add this item to your xps 630i desktop line, thank you 1 Comment »

Monochrome mode display for laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by viat0r Jun 15

It would be great to have a dual mode laptop display that had a monochrome mode.
What good is having wifi or a 3g mobile broadband card when you can not read your display outdoors. It could be similar to what the OLPC project uses on their device.
Specs for it are here
http://laptop.org/laptop/hardware/specs.shtml
and here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLPC_XO-1#Display

This should also reduce energy consumption and increase battery life! 6 Comments »

Customize Ubuntu for Dell

Linux submitted by zmjjmz Jun 15

Seeing as Ubuntu is open source and you can edit the kernel, it would be great if Dell customized it to better fit their computers, much like the way Apple customized DarwinBSD. (Ok, not _that_ much, but you get the idea.)
Some ideas for it: Customized look (GTK2+ theme, Emerald theme, wallpaper, GDM theme, etc.) to fit Dell products (You could use the GDM theme from here: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Dell+XPS+GDM+Theme?content=78092 for the M1330n and use the underlying wallpaper too), customized kernel (this will help speed it up) per machine, customized applications, you could even eschew GNOME and use a highly customized E17 or FVWM setup, and so on.
It ends where your imagination ends (and budget).
One important part: Every modification you make must be Open Source!
While it'd be great to have the integration that Apple has, it'd also be great _not_ to have the same lockin and proprietariness of Apple. 7 Comments »

Offer Nextday Delivery

Sales Strategies submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 15

Please for the love of God offer next day delivery of pre-configured PCs. I've just had to buy a new M1530 at short notice. Which meant I had to go to Tesco. Which meant I had to buy a Vista machine. Which means I'm now mentally traumatized and scarred for life!

Seriosuly getting Vista up and running for the first time is just a barrage of pop-ups. All one after the other. Some at the same time. If I could have ordered a Ubuntu system directly from Dell, I could have avoided that whole mind destroying experience. 3 Comments »

Sell Ubuntu PCs in Tescos

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 15

Dell please sell Ubuntu PCs at Tescos. I've just had to buy a PC at short notice. Not being able to wait for you to deliver one, I had to buy a Windows Vista machine. Now I feel dirty and I'm mentally traumatized and scarred from the whole experience!

Vista is a seriously annoying OS! 3 Comments »

Laptop Hard Drive slide out (removable) tray

Laptops submitted by toyota_supra Jun 15

I would really like to see some sort of a slide out tray with a hard drive. It would be so convenient to slide in a hard drive with different operating system (XP, Vista, Linux), without going through the hustle of multi boot, confusing partitioning and last but not least, in case of a hard drive failure (even on multi boot systems) there would a quick and easy way to get up and running on a previously set up operating system(s).

I know that some 17 inch laptops offer optional second hard drive, but this idea is for a removable HD on any size laptop.

T.S. 4 Comments »

Personal computer for cats

New Product Ideas submitted by badblood Jun 9

Ever had to open the door for your cat, tired of putting food int he bowl or water.

Well how about creating a personal computer for cats with a touch screen ready made for paws.

Kitty can touch the screen to put more water in her bowl. She can enter her personal code to be let in the house without disturbing you from your television viewing. With an RFID tag you can track her too.

Warn Buyers Dell Laptops Must Use Dell Charger

Service and Support, Laptop Power submitted by gear Jun 9

Dell laptops use a charger that has a built in "chip".

If you try to use a non-Dell Charger, it will only power the machine, but will not charge the battery.

So if you are traveling and lose your adapter or it failed, you have to get one from DELL.

The only problem is, DELL typically take days to weeks to ship a new adapter to you if you are in the USA, and if you are outside, much longer if it is available at all.

So a bad / lost Adapter means your DELL Laptop just became a paperweight. One too expensive to be thrown out.

The only non-Dell adapter that works is the Kensington brand adapter, but that is only distributed at Circuit City in the US, and even these ones may not come with the "tip" needed to work with a DELL.

DELL is the only major manufacturer to actively prevent people from using non-Dell adapters in their notebooks.

Apparently DELL hasn't figured out that people travel and may not be able to wait in one place for a while for a spare adapter to be sent to them from DELL.

Want some real fun? Try to get a spare Dell adapter in a mid sized city in China.... 2 Comments »

Latitude XT Battery Slice improvement

Latitude products submitted by koshea331 Jun 10

We are in the process of installing new Latitude XT tablet computers, so far we are impressed with the units. The one main suggestion I would make is that the Battery Slice should allow you to pass through connect to the base. It seems silly that they only way you can run the XT in the base and recharge the slice is sepperatly. I seems that it would just need a pass through connector that would allow for both the XT use in the base and to recharge both the main and the slice batteries.

Thanks,

Stealth Mode for XPS laptops

XPS products submitted by jhaber Jun 10

I think it would be nice if the next XPS notebooks included an integrated graphics card that can be switched to, along with a Stealth mode that can be switched to (like your newest Alienware line). These modes would really increase the battery. The m15x gets 2:30 on a six cell... I think that you guys can do a lot better with the XPS line. 2 Comments »
