Increase the Salary of all Dell Staff - except senior managers/execs

Dell submitted by badblood 04/08/07

Dell profits are grand, even during low seasons. Give a little more back to all those people that make it possible - DELL EMPLOYEES! And I don't mean a bonus, I mean an honest to god meaningful salary increase. Include in that all the Dell Dudes working in call centres around the globe.

Go DELL! 56 Comments »

AMD in XPS Notebooks

submitted by inspiron8000 02/18/07

I think dell should come out with a 15inch XPS Notebook with an AMD Processor and should incorporate the new RS600 Chipset set for release in April and also come with x2800 or x2900 graphics or the integrated x1250 graphics solutions.

If you this Mr. Dell I think people would take your Company seriously in offering AMD Products. I nothing against your inspirons, they are great ( I own an Inspiron 8000 Fully Loaded for back in its day) but I'm looking for a 15inch XPS with and AMD in it.

Hope You take this in Consideration
P.S. Keep my suggestion in mind you release these in the future release in your XPS Line. 2 Comments »

Replacment Hard Drives Preloaded with OS.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by abrezinsky 05/15/07

I've replaced many dell drives in the past few years, and you always ship the drive replacement in the drive holder to slide right back into the system. However you always ship the drive with the originally installation media and a blank drive.

Given how many people I've seen try to install Windows themselves, send a replacement drive that has Windows installed with the drivers all setup, restoring the machine to the factory shipped image. Then the user just has to copy their backed up files over instead of requiring the user to install the OS and get the driver configuration right. 2 Comments »

If you preinstall Ubuntu, please change the colours to something fresher than that bright brown.

Linux submitted by cosh 05/16/07

That brown is gonna put a hellova lotta of people off. Put something bright and airy and fresh and modern on it instead.

Okay I know some people like that colour, but something more universal would be a better choice for the mass-market, maybe something Dell-themed. 27 Comments »

Nerd Discount + Support Option

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by dino 05/16/07

If a customer scores high on an optional technical quiz reward them with a nerd discount. Since Dell will be saving all that money on not having to support this type of user. Also the service tag could be flagged with a nerd alert so the technician only has to answer the phone with, “Hello nerd what part do you need me to send.” 36 Comments »

Batteries

Laptop Power submitted by sileq 05/16/07

I bought an Inspiron 6000 and after a year the battery stopped working. I went on line to order another battery and noticed comments from other customers who had the same problem. I called customer care and was told that these batteries that are selling for $159 before tax actually do only have a lifespan of only one year. I am astounded that this can be acceptable. Having paid over $800 for my laptop I am now expected to pay in excess of $160 a year for batteries? Is this some kind of joke? The customer representative went on to say that the longevity of the battery could be affected by my usage! I didn't know that I was limited to a certain amount of hours her day! Nor did I know or was told that I would be expected to buy a new battery every year. Needless to say buying a computor that is portable is incumbent on having a working battery and not being tied to a electrical socket. I am disgusted that this is considered acceptable. I will not buy a Dell product again. 4 Comments »

Tie it together - home bundels that work

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rsanders 05/16/07

With the coming introduction of windows media server, yet another layer of complexity will be added to the home network. Having a configuration that is tested and certified by DELL to work together would make it easier when attempting to set up a home network, one that can share files wirelessly between multiple computers and displays and portable devices. Work with MSFT to make all this stuff easy to deploy! You two work out the bugs and make it easy for me. I want a DELL certified plug and play in a home network… I’ll buy it, if you make it work. NEEDS TO WORK TOGETHER: computers / centralized storage / wireless network / portable devices / multiple displays / audio equipment.

Problems I don’t want to worry about: HDCP! Either make it all compliant or get rid of it. 1 Comment »

Move out of California!!!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by smooth_ops 05/16/07

Dear Dell executives,

Have you figured out when sales went downhill vs. your main competitor, HP? I have a hunch it was after you started charging sales tax to us Californians (and citizens of other state). Be like Amazon, stay out of CA! 14 Comments »

Don't make us buy Vista

Operating Systems submitted by icantseeyou 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

From all of the press I have read it is plain that Vista is a big bomb. To buy the cheapest version I hear it isn't even as good as XP SP2. At the same time you need at least 4 Gig to run it. Offer other options... I don't care if it's Linux, XP, or a rat running on a wheel. Don't make us buy Vista.

You can read more about this the OS options Dell offers here.

Beware of the chaos that is Linux

Linux submitted by wlaoye 05/08/07

It is widely acknowledged that in business, as long as you don't make mistakes, you are doing alright. Before Dell goes further and deeper, it has to realise that Linux is a quagmire. It is nothing but chaos itself. Unlike MS, there isn't a clear-cut leader in Linux. It is many, many individuals or groups of them each trying to make a cut on their own by none can manage to do so well enough to be acknowledged as such. Software, we know, is not just applications, or OS or programming. Above all these is the support service, or rather, the quality of it. If Dell customers are to depend on the Ubuntu bunch to support them, they will be in for a shock.
Dell, before you put that stuff in to your PC, make sure that the support service is commendable. Perhaps start a support service business for Linux now. Meanwhile take a look at what Debian can do at http://wlaoye.no-ip.biz. 13 Comments »

Renegotiate your Microsoft contracts.

Dell, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Software submitted by jmxz 05/07/07

Of the profit in a PC you sell, consider how much of the profit goes to the OS vendor.

Looking at the quarterly reports for Microsoft it seems that there's quite a bit of room between what you pay them and what they need to still make a profit.

Start treating Microsoft the same way you treat the rest of your software vendors --- make them pay for the exposure they get for being pre-installed on a Dell. And, like the rest of your software vendors, make them make money off of the upgrades from their Basic versions of the software to the full ones. And, like some of the rest of your software vendors, make them share some of that upgrade revenue back to you.

There are many reasons they should accept such a proposal:

First, remember how important DELL is to making Vista a success. Keep posting lies about Vista being better than it is (http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66173 , http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/67016/ ) and Vista will succeed at the expense of your credibility. For this, THEY charge YOU money?!? Tell Microsoft that you'll start being honest and recommending that customers choose XP for gaming and Linux for Security, and you'll see how much they'll be begging/paying you to support Vista.

Secondly, consider the long term. There are only so many dollars of profit in a PC that the market will support. Chip and component companies get a piece of this. Software vendors get a piece of this. You get the remainder. Your long term hope for profits demand that the software and chip parts of this equation stay small. Apple has an easy time because they collect both the software and the system manufacturer parts. For Dell, your best hope of competing with Apple would be to either get part of the software piece (http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/64581) or minimize the profits of the software vendors by making them pay you instead of you paying them.

The way today's market looks to me, it seems like you should be insisting that Microsoft sell you a deeply discounted XP for as long as your customers want it --- and for them to pay you for inflicting Vista on the world, just as the rest of your crippleware vendors pay you for the exposure.

But to do that, you first have to prove to them that Ubuntu is a viable alternative, or else they'll call your bluff.

If you can show that Ubuntu could replace them, all their profit can be yours. 8 Comments »

$178

Sales Strategies submitted by steveoc 05/08/07

$178 Australian - thats about $150 US at current rates.

That is the TOTAL COST to me, for taking an existing HP, IBM, or Dell machine of recent vintage, and making it fly .. regaining its usefulness .. and putting the fun back into computing for its owners.

$178 AU

Replace motherboard + CPU + RAM with :

GA-M61VME-S2
Sempron AM2 3000+
2x512MB DDR2 RAM

From the local Chinatown PC market, all new parts and under warranty.

Using the existing chassis, peripherals, monitor, hard disk and CD burner .. then load PCLinuxOS on it, setup Beryl + Emerald for an insanely fun user interface, load every single game from the repositories .. google earth .. etc, etc .. and hand it back. Only takes one evening to do the surgery, and can be done in the lounge room whilst watching TV at the same time, with brain in neutral.

Fast, Fun, Permanently virus-free, and unbreakable.

Mind you, _some_ Dell boxes need a wiring hack on the ATX power connector to get around the non-standard wiring on their power supplies and motherboards, but its trivial to sort out. Just google it ...

eg : http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=oplex_other...< as a part time hobby with bare bones margin, my 'customers' cant believe that for less than the cost of just Vista alone, They can turn their old clunker into an extremely useful - and fun - machine, for both the parents, and the kids. Its literally JAW DROPPING just how good these machines are after a measly $178 hot rod job.

And anybody can do this - its not rocket science.

For every customer who gets this hot rod job done, Im getting 2-3 phone calls from friends of theirs who also want the same trick applied to their aging PC, and a $300+ bill is more than fine with all of them.

How about Dell provide 'retrofit' kits to hot up old models of Dell computers .. and chuck in a PCLinuxOS TR4 CD, and a standard ATX <--> Dell ATX connector as well, where the model of Dell donar machine requires it. Supplying such a retrofit kit is just pure margin for Dell, and requires no support infrastructure other than some informative web pages. Easy money for Dell, good for customers, and good for computer technicians.

Not good for Microsoft - it means one less sale of Vista, and one less customer llocked into their upgrade cycle, but who really give a fsck about Microsoft anymore anyway ? Comment »

Wireless device to transmit video signals

Monitors and Displays submitted by sqlguru 05/08/07

One of the reasons that I wanted a flat screen TV (Dell 32" HD LCD) was the sleek look. However, with about 6 inputs (HD antenna, Satellite, Computer, DVD, etc.), the mess of wires coming out of the back really detracts from the sleek look. I would like a TV that has a separate box for all of the inputs. The signal is then wirelessly transmitted from the box to the TV set. I can then hide this box in my media cabinet and the TV retains a sleek look with only a power chord coming out of the back. Obviously, communication with the box (for switching signales) should be UHF instead of IR so that when my cabinet is closed, I can still change inputs.

This concept works best for the larger screen TV's, but I could also see this being carried over to high-end monitors and other devices. 5 Comments »

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.

How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.

Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.

If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details
