Love
Sales Strategies submitted by cosh

Dell should include love with Dell computers. Romance would be a unique and popular selling point.
Okay gotta turn that into a legitimate idea. Er, how about a tag attached to the PC, which you can easily remove, thanking the buyer for their love and offering love back.

Admit it - you were wrong....Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Ten years ago this month, Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.
How the winds of success are fleeting.
Admit it - You were wrong.

Free updates of Dell Ubuntu versions
Desktops, Linux submitted by mkmaster78
10/23/07 **REVIEWED**
I know, of course, that Ubuntu is free (both free as in freedom and free as in beer), however, Dell is making their own customized versions of Ubuntu. I haven't really found any reference to this, but is Dell going to release their version for free to those who already have an older version of Dell's Ubuntu, and maybe to those who just want it, as a free upgrade? If not, this is the idea: Release the update for free so people can have the supported distribution of Ubuntu for their supported Dell's (and maybe others.)

Work with Canonical to make Ubuntu upgrades smoother.
Linux submitted by jmxz
10/23/07
I just upgraded my E1505N to the newest Ubuntu that was released earlier this month; and was disappointed that it did not go flawlessly.
In particular, it "forgot" that my screen is capable of a 1680x1050. Also surprising that all the xwindows setup programs I tried see the E1505N as having a "Generic Monitor" with an unknown resolution. Since you're working with the Ubuntu vendor directly, it seems you could have worked with them to make the upgrade process correctly identify your hardware.
While it was easy enough for me to run the command line program "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to get my correct resolution back; this wouldn't be obvious to the novice user.
Idea: Already said it above, but: Since you're working with the Ubuntu vendor directly, it seems you could have worked with them to make the upgrade process correctly identify your hardware.

System Security - Fingerprint Scanners
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by guardianxps
02/17/07
I would like to see computers have some new technology added like Fingerprint scanners. Stolen computers are an issue and adding this will create a better level of security. The only downside I can see would be if one person sold the computer to another and didnt reset the scanner.
Still, I would like to see this and I am sure others would too.

SAVE CO2 EMISSIONS: Provide hibernate and resume time scheduling to save energy for business and home users
Environment submitted by johnny
02/21/07
How about supplying some software or bios settings that can allow hibernation of a computer at a certain time and have it automatically resume at a certain time (without requiring the user to press the power button to resume).
For example, the company I work for requires we leave our PCs running when we leave the office, so software updates can be done.
This would save a lot of energy for businesses who need computers online for a small window (e.g. 2 hours) outside office hours to allow them to provide software maintenance, but not require the PC to be running all night unnecessarily using power.
Imagine the savings of greenhouse gases if all office desktops were not running for 8 hours in the evening for example.
This would also be useful for home users where they could configure their desktop computer to hibernate in the evenings and resume in the mornings. This would allow then to access their home computer from work or whilst on the road during the day using windows remote desktop. There are probably a large number of geeks that leave their computers running 24x7 at home, who could save energy.
The only issue I can think of so far with this idea is that antivirus software may not have a large enough window to scan files in the evening and therefore may end up resuming the scan when the computer resumes in the morning. This may only be an issue for users with lots of files.

There are lot´s of discussions about Linux or Vista or XP.
Moreover there are so many opinions about Linux, versions of it... Why don´t move them all into a section exclusive to it (It deserves it) so that it´s easy NOT TO REPEAT 1 million times the same thing.

Diagnostic CD
Service and Support submitted by joeaguy
02/19/07
Include a hardware diagnostic CD. Put it in, boot up from the cd, and it will scan that all your drives, memory, cards, motherboard, etc, are in working order. Some tools to check and repair NTFS, FAT, and etx3 file systems from the disk, and/or scan for viruses would be great also.
Apple provides hardware diagnostic CDs with many of its computers, and also includes a copy of TechTool, which can do disk repair and includes some preventative maintenance tools, with an AppleCare subscription. Having a report from such a tool really helps with support calls, in saving both support diagnostic time, and saving customers time in getting support to realize there is a real problem.
The diagnostic partition included on many Dell machines is just too easy to get erased if you reinstall your OS. A CD would be an option I'd prefer.

Automate BIOS, Driver, Firmware Update for ALL systems
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by phubert
09/17/07 **REVIEWED**
** I thought I'd already posted something like this... * Dell already has an ISO available for servers that will scan a range of Dell servers and update BIOS, firmware (e.g. PERC RAID controllers), and drivers in a single reboot.
I don't know whether Dell has this for Linux as well.
However, let me suggest this could also be done via an ONLINE -scan- of the system similar to Microsoft Update ... only for ALL OSes Dell sells and for all _systems_, servers, desktops, workstations, and notebooks!

Facial Recognition Using a Webcam
Software, XPS products submitted by lektronimo
03/21/07
Could a facial scanning software be integrated into XPS systems, so maybe along with fingerprint readers we can get two modes of protection against data theft? Don't know what the camera resolution must be to plot the dots on the picture, but I'm guessing around 2mpx would be more then enough. Obviously, you would get difficulty in unlit rooms, so a small led flash could be incoperated next to the rotating camera.
And can this be somehow used with Vista Ulitmate's BitLocker function?
Check out my other idea as well, it could tie in with this one easier.

Partner with Sharp to incorperate their new touchscreen technology into Dell products
Dell submitted by jervis961
10/02/07
"If you thought the iPhone screen's two-finger touch was cool then you should see a prototype from Sharp Corp. on show at the Ceatec exhibition, which opened on Tuesday in Makuhari Messe. The 3.5-inch screen integrates an optical scanner pixel alongside each LCD pixel. This means the screen can scan objects such as name cards placed on its surface and recognize fingers or other objects. Because it's determining the position of fingers from a scanner input and not a touch screen, it's possible to touch the screen in more than two places and have all fingers recognized.
Additionally the lack of a touch screen or other filters means the image from the screen remains clear and bright.
In a demonstration on the company's stand at Ceatec the display showed a simply musical keyboard. Different tones could be produced by pressing different combinations of notes.
Sharp also demonstrated the screen working as a name card scanner. It has a resolution of 320 pixels by 480 pixels and completed the scanning task in about 1 second.
The panel is still a prototype but commercialization is expected in the first half of next year. Samples are already in the hands of potential customers but Sharp wouldn't name those companies.
Potential applications are plenty. For example a future cell phone could use the screen and offer users both a touch-screen interface and scanner for name cards, barcodes or fingerprint recognition for security. Or it could find use in a computer gaming device where players have to use multiple fingers to repel opponents.
The screen on show isn't the first time a scanner has been integrated into an LCD panel. At the Electronic Display Expo in Tokyo in April 2003 Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co. Ltd. unveiled a prototype LCD with a scanner built between the screen's pixels but it never became a commercial product. It was also much slower than Sharp's panel taking about 7 seconds to scan a name

Scanner built to Notebook lid
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by class2008
05/19/07
I think Dell should build a scanner onto the lid of a notebook(s). If someone did not have a scanner with them, on the road for example, or wi-fi hotspot, and needed to scan something, they would have one on their notebook. A scanner does not consist of much, so it would not be hard, and they are not that thick. The largest capacity battery should be included with the notebook at purchase though. What does everyone else think?

1815dn - Vista support for Netscan utility
Operating Systems, Printers and Ink submitted by aetherscape
10/02/07
Please update your network scan utility for the 1815dn to support the Vista OS.
Currently the NetScan utility (i.e. ability to scan documents from your computer over a network) that comes with the 1815dn does not support Vista. This is a key function for an all-in-one printer unit and one of the reasons I purchased the 1815dn to begin with.
Vista was released back in March 2007 and I have waited patiently for the update that would fix this incompatibility. Half a year later I am still waiting.
Please fix this functionality.

enable HI-REZ network scanning
Broadband and Mobility submitted by f4ll0u7
02/21/07
i recently set up my first wireless network in my apartment, including an inspiron 6400, 926 photo printer, and 3300 wireless printer adapter.
i attempted to scan across my network, and found that i could not increase the resolution past the default 150 dpi. after speaking with a dell tech, i found that dell actually limits the quality of your scan across a network. there is no way to increase the quality, unless you physically hook up the printer to the computer via USB.
this completely defeats the purpose of having a wireless network. dell should release updated software and drivers to remove this limitation.
