Quality Checks by Humans

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by lambchops468 08/31/07

I ordered a Inspiron 1520 and I am fed up with the issues:

crashed hard drive (first 6 days) (I will forgive this one, happens on every manufacturer, its just luck)
vibrating optical drive (shakes entire notebook, abnormal, new one fixed it)
Grainy Screen
Headphone Noise
Casing Defect (bulge in case seam, can see inside notebook)

I think that dell should instute a quality check system on the computers they ship out. Not just tests that can be run on the computer automatically, but a actual person physically inspecting/testing the function of the notebook such as:
- Grainy Screen/backlight bleed (go get a HP laptop and see the difference, go to the store)
- Headphone Noise
- Casing Defects
- Optical Drives that make too much noise
- squeaky keys
- and other issues that cannot be detected by a hardware check running on a CPU

If you do not have the finances to create such a program, then you can add the service as part of the warranty, with a garuntee that the devices that are checked will not have problems on arrival. (So therefore the QC is optional)

This will actually make/save money because people like me won't have to send their laptops back and forth wasting your shipping money/technician fee replacing parts that would be replaced anyway at the quailty check program.

you could also send a special survey to early-adopters to identify the biggest problems in a new computer line and check those at quailty check, certifying those parts free of defects. 45 Comments »

New Product Ideas, Laptop Power submitted by pell Apr 18

Introduce a device user can plug a lot of battaries to. The device has a power cord plugged to laptop (for example, as second CD/DVD-slot battery). It can looks like a dock-station with 4 or even more battery slots. It uses the same laptop's type batteries.

Moreover, the device can be equipped with charger to charge a lot of battaries simultaneously.

It can be useful for a long presentations, out-of-office work, etc. 4 Comments »

Info on Estimated Battery Life

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jrg Feb 26

Dell should post information about the estimated battery life of their laptops. They used to do this in the magazine/catalog/add that they used to send out, but it has strangely disappeared. I find this info to be very useful and important when it comes to choosing between two laptops. Please give us this info! 6 Comments »

SFF computers have to be more upgradeable

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by drfelip Feb 27

Small Form Factor computers have a big potential: small footprint, low power usage, silent... They are also much more good-looking than big, ugly desktops. I like SFF Inspiron, XPS, Vostro and Optiplex computers (I myself own an old SFF Optiplex GX260).

The problem is that, using a book-like case, they are very difficult to upgrade: they can only fit 1 hard drive and low profile graphics cards.

In order to use the potential of SFF computers, you have to provide a fully upgradable solution: a well-cooled case with room for 2 hard disks (with RAID option) and 1 full-size graphics card. If the case is a problem, get rid of current cases and change them to something more cube-like, such are Shuttle XPCs (http://us.shuttle.com/Home.aspx) Current SFF are only good for office work.

Make SFF more upgradable and they are going to sell very nicely. 6 Comments »

Consumer friendly Service Support

Dell, Service and Support submitted by austinmba Feb 27

Dell should partner with Best Buy and enable consumers to bring their Dell computers to the geek squad for warnety service. This way for people who work and can't wait at home for a service tech they can simply drop it off at Bestbuy. The best part is that it gives Dell better stickyness with customers. 11 Comments »

XPS One with touchscreen & wide viewing angles

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by audryn Feb 27

I would love the XPS One in my kitchen, if it only had a touchscreen like the HP Touchsmart and equivalent viewing angles (160 vertical + 170 horizontal).

Touchscreen is time-saver for busy parents with hands full.

Wide angle allows you to watch DVR shows and DVDs as you move about the room. 3 Comments »

Dell please offer discrete ATI video cards in your laptops again

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by pjq1977 Feb 27

dell used to offer ati discrete video cards but now currently only 1 dell laptop offers a discrete ATI video card (XPS M2010) and you could argue that it is not truly a laptop. please give customers a choice of ati with the nvidia choices for discrete video cards. some people do not like nvida cards and prefer ati. yes i understand ati is owned by amd and you recently quit selling amd powered systems online but please don't ignore ati as a video card option. 3 Comments »

List which notebooks have IEEE 1394/i.link/Firewire!!!

Dell Web Site, Laptops submitted by brutalnet Feb 28

I had to call Dell twice to find out which models had an i.link port and I got conflicting information. I just ordered a Vostro 1500 which I've been told has a 4-pin i.link/mini-firewire port - it better... I do digital audio recording - I'm recording a CD of my own music, and it's imperative that I have this type of interface in order to connect my recording device. Even in the final specs list, it's not listed. That's crazy! I'd think that it would be a selling point and beneficial for Dell to list this right on the first page of the model selections... On/Off Button For Touchpad On All Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by harisn9000 Feb 28

I'd really like to see Dell release a touch pad that has a simple on/off button. I know they have software that does this, but a button is physical and right in front of you with an indicator LED displaying if it is on or off.

PS. HP already offers this! Let's get busy Dell!
Also, I'll take the first one of the assembly line as a demo and a beta tester! 1 Comment »

Include battery "dummies" to prevent battery degradation.

Laptop Power submitted by busterlee Feb 28

Dell should include battery modules (dummies) which are equivalent to travel module and prevent the battery pins from being damaged from exposure when people use the adapter to power the laptop. 5 Comments »

Annoying blue power button

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by jescott418 Feb 29

I just purchased a Inspiron 530s. Very nice computer, fits nicely in a small space next to desk. Only one problem is the flashing blue power button when in sleep mode. Talk about brite!
I have this computer in a bedroom and its a problem at night.
I end up turning off the computer because I have tried covering it up and it still shines through. 14 Comments »

Implement a voting system scaled from -10 to 10 points...

IdeaStorm submitted by markvs624 Feb 29

admins, please implement a points system that more accurately reflects the user's approval or disapproval of an idea. no more promote/demote 50/50! start with -10 for complete disgust over an idea, and end with 10 points for absolute reverence! then you'll get a true reflection of the ideastorm community's real feeling toward each idea. 14 Comments »

Make a monitor with only 1 cable leaving it

Monitors and Displays submitted by eaglewonj Jan 24 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Currently, the monitor on my desk has several cables running to/from it. At the least would be 1 input cable and a power cable, but as you take advantage of the multitude of inputs, you get a mess. The plan would be to develop a system where only 1 cable leaves the monitor (carrying all the video, power, data, etc) to a small connection box that one could put under the desk or on the floor. This way, all the inputs, power and data could be connected there and only send 1 cable to the top of the desk. This reduces clutter and leaves some flexibility in placement of the monitor. I have it on an articulating arm and would love to have to only send 1 cable up and make one connection.

The challange will be to not have a huge cable that is impossible to bend.

DisplayPort offers video, audio, and soon USB carried over the same cable.

Buy @ Dell, Pick up @ Best Buy

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by bsmmoney Mar 1

Have you ever come home and seen that little sticky note on your door from UPS and thought, SHOOT! I missed my new Dell! Why can't Dell take online custom orders and ship them directly to your local Best Buy store? This would also allow customers to use Dell coupons and gift cards online. Many people don't like to give out their shipping address either. Shipping custom Dells from the Dell online store to Best Buy would bring a lot more customers and strengthen Dell and Best Buy's relationship. 17 Comments »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 244 Comments »

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery.

Laptop Power submitted by sotopheavy Feb 21

My rule of thumb is if a battery goes down below an hour of laptop life it is useless . This usually happens within the first 8 months of owning a laptop for me.

If I'm using my laptop to surf the internet I will usually plug it in until it's full, then unplug it, then plug it in when it gets low, then unplug it again when it's full. This got so annoying that I eventually just left it plugged in and my battery now lasts 15 minutes with wifi off and the screen dimmed all the way down. There has to be a better way to manage laptop power than this. Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery. 5 Comments »
