Better looking cases

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by pringles 05/10/07

I think Dell should offer more variety for their case designs.

The XPS cases are quite an improvement over the standard case design. Yet there still isn't much choice. Dell now owns Alienware, they should take their lead. Be able to change the color of the case, add fans, add LEDs, stuff like that. Also have cases that have transparent sides to see the hardware.

Make Dell look good. 2 Comments »

Improve Product Design

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Desktops and Laptops submitted by carpathia 05/10/07

LCD
1)Improve LCD design! I have to say the new 27" is a winner in terms of designs and price but why not improve further such as this LG where all cables can be plugged into an external port hidden elswhere under your table?

Notebooks-
1)Improve the simple things = lid lock & locations of ports !
I hate the latitude lid lock on the side. it always comes off when u slide your notebook into your bag, waking up the system and drains all the power

2)the USB ports of the side is also poorly designed as not all USB sockets can fit thanks to the laptop design.

3)Keyboards- all dell laptops keyboards FLEX in some areas. Need to fix this.

4)built in subwoofer to your mainstream laptops! Comment »

Flexible Screens?

Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas submitted by skylarkguy 05/11/07

When will this become a reality? How many people would want a laptop they could roll up and stick in a briefcase? How about a newspaper that lasts forever because it is updated every day? This could also provide a true 360 degree screen.

Think of the possibilities. I think Dell could really take advantage of this emerging technology. Imagine this screen, but able to bend and flex: http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...< is REALLY awesome: http://www.engadget.com/page/2/ 2 Comments »

Call back option

Service and Support submitted by samiam 05/11/07

A simple add-on to the Dell phone support would be requesting a call-back, rather than hold.

Example:
"Thank you for calling Dell. The current hold time is 10 minutes. Press 1 to request a call back in 15 minutes."
Thank you. Please leave a detailed message, starting with your phone number, and a respresentative will call you back in approximately 15 minutes."

This would allow the user to get off hold, and allow them to get something else done while waiting for the tech to call back, after already being breifed by the voicemail on the issue. This would also assist in sorting the issue to the correct department, rather than "Please hold while I transfer you to someone more suited to answer that particular question." 2 Comments »

Choose CPU architecture on same model PCs

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by twocows 05/11/07

Personally, I'm not a fan of Intel processors; I like AMD far better. However, some people prefer Intel over AMD. It seems ridiculous to offer only one company's processor per model. If I want an AMD Turion 64 X2 rather than an Intel Core 2 processor, I should be able to make that decision. 5 Comments »

Laptop Speaker location.

Laptops submitted by benjesuit 03/20/07

Never place the speakers in the area where one's hands rest.

*Best placement is on the sides for greatest stereo seperation. *

Alternatively, in the front of the unit. However, one's wrists and clothing articles may block and/or muffle the sound. 5 Comments »

Lightscribe for Dell PCs

Stop using Conexant modems

Linux, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by afv-13 05/04/07

The Conexant drivers for Linux must be purchased from Linuxant which is ridiculous considering we've already paid for the device as bundled in the laptop. They do offer a crippleware version that doesn't support voice and is limited to 14kbs.

I would prefer that a supported modem is used instead of coming to a deal with Linuxant because they shouldn't be rewarded for ripping us off for all these years. 2 Comments »

Computer glasses

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by jmbslave 05/05/07

A lot of sciences magazines, movies have showed our near future with people wearing intelligent glasses, with a nano-computer inside and a screen display on right glass as in below.

There are a lot of wise geek in this site but i won't be precise.I think that the best in intelligent glasses isn't to have a mobile computer with a little screen perpetually shinning in front you eyes.
I think there is something that isn't technologically so far from today and that could revolutionize our interactions with informations in the world : ZOOM.
Just imagine if you could zoom in just by frowning, on anything around you. You see a roadsign in the street but i'ts too far from you, you can't read it, so you zoom in. You are having a trip in the country, you see an eagle far in the sky, but you'r not sure it's one, zooming in answer to your speculations.
But sure it could be dangerous and perverse... 1 Comment »

Disallow more than 3 categories (per post)

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 05/05/07

When I try to browse e.g. the IdeaStorm category, which as I understood it, is for suggestions related to IdeaStorm itself only, I see all kinds of posts but not many of them related to IdeaStorm (itself).

If the number of allowed categories were limited, some people might start to think about them instead of simply clicking on all of them. 4 Comments »

Fast and reliable (Raid 5) storage for home use

Servers and Storage submitted by paulj1x 05/05/07

With increasing home storage of audio and video media well beyond normal backup capabilities it is becoming more and more important to have fast and reliable storage for home use. Dell offers Raid 5 for PowerEdge servers and Raid 0 and 1 for the XPS series, but what is really needed is Raid 5 targeted for home use. Raid 0 and 1 are very inefficient and a PowerEdge server does not make sense for home use, a Raid 5 option for the XPS would be an ideal solution.

Make longer lasting batteries for better portability

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice 05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery.

Basic laptops: at least 2 1/2 hours battery life
Entertainment laptops: at least 3 1/2 hours battery life
XPS laptops: at least 4 1/2 hours battery life 31 Comments »

Customizable Laptop Design Features

Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by buddyjlee 05/05/07

I recently was in the market for a new laptop and immediately eliminated Dell from my options purely based on the terrible design and look of the inspirons. This was unfortunate becuase Dell was initially my Number 1 choice due to good past experience. Comparing purely based on look, Dell easily offers the most unattractive design. The white

Go beyond what any manufacturer is offering and don't simply offer customization of case colors but allow the customer to play a big part in in how their laptop looks. Allow them to determine the layout, weight, etc. Or if the customer is not interested in customization, they may simply order the "basic" model offered.

Dell revolutionized the PC industry with its customization of what's inside the computer now it is time to bring the same idea to the outside of the computer. 2 Comments »

All Dell Accessories should use a common power hub

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Printers and Ink submitted by delawie 05/06/07

I need two power strips to hold the scads of wall wart power supplies I use for all of my computer gadgets - printer, scanner, camera, speakers, external hard drive, etc. Dell should come up with a standard power hub with multiple outlets - maybe 8 - 10 - that all of its accessories could use. then you would only need two sockets - one for the CPU & monitor, one for the power hub. 3 Comments »
