Personal Designs for Personal Computers

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by rlakes 12/17/07

On Dell's web page, the costumer must be able to choose from a few different designs of laptos and desktops. I mean different colours and different body styles... Comment »

AVG Free Anti-Virus for life (Windows Users)

Operating Systems, Software submitted by rlakes 12/17/07

For Windows users, Dell must give their costumers a plus to compete against Mac. Always updated free anti-virus and anti-spyware like AVG for life! I think AVG is the option rather than Norton or Mc Afee beceuse it is very light and every day have new updates. AVG didn't affect the performance of the PC's like other Anti-Virus do. 11 Comments »

Dell drivers on a chip inside the computer

Service and Support submitted by explo5ivo 12/18/07

Well not exactly, I know other people has posted that Dell should use USB flash drives instead of discs to ship drivers., but how about this:

I really think that Dell needs to be the first computer manufacturer to add a chip inside the system that will allow access to the Internet and will automatically connect to Dell servers to download the drivers, it could be a very easy and simple to use interface, something like the F12 on boot menu.

This way it's easier and faster to get drivers rather than wait for a disc, and this chip will automatically download the right drivers.

This way the drivers will be available and ready to go after installing Windows. Anyone who has dealt with driver installation after a hard drive failure knows it's a pain to search for drivers online. 1 Comment »

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

make linux systems EASY TO FIND

Dell Web Site submitted by phubert 10/18/07

At other sites, I have seen comments by individuals who have BOUGHT Dell Ubuntu systems complaining about the difficulty FINDING said systems.

I think you'll get more sales if you improve the visibility! 30 Comments »

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Put Ubuntu on a laptop with better specs

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by piratehead 10/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer an Ubuntu laptop (Inspirion or otherwise) with available discreet graphics, discreet audio, 8GB or more of RAM, a quad-core processor, bluetooth, next-gen WiFi, and integrated webcam.

I don't know how many of those are possible at this point, but each one is a step forward for people who are waiting on certain specs to bite on a Dell laptop.

Now that you offer laptops with Ubuntu on them, I really don't want to go to another company just to get the computer specs I want. I wish to vote for Dell with my dollars, paying for a laptop that has actually been tested and certified by the manufacturer to run Ubuntu. Please give me the opportunity!

Ubuntu Dell Repo

Linux, Service and Support submitted by tekhawk 07/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

I want a real media center

Desktops and Laptops submitted by bubba 02/19/07

And no, I do not want another PC hanging off to the side somewhere.

Lets begin by building a flat panel TV. On the side, back, whatever is an access that holds an honest to gawd real PC MoBo that can EASILY be removed for an upgraded board. (Yes I will own my TV a lot longer than a PC. KEEP THE MoBO standard so I can use it for something else!!!)

Now toss in an access door holding a 500 gig hard drive. Hey, make it big enough I can add another hard drive when needed. Again, make it EASY.

Now toss in a CD/DVD/HDDVD/whatever reader/burner.

Now we need a great grapics card and TV capture card to go with it. This card (or its driver) should of course allow me to capture ANYTHING I can view and distribute it to ANY other media device in my house hold.

Speaking of distributing, it should have a gigabyte ethernet connection as well as wireless (faster is better). Heck, build the home router into the danged thing, everyone needs a router anyhow. If nothing else make it an option. (EASILY added to the TV when I want.)

As we now have distribution allow it to act as a server (both media and apps) to my other devices. No reason that it couldn't serve media/apps to a "terminal" and Dell could sell "terminals" to go with it.

Yes of course it should have Picture in Picture. (Or multiple pictures, this is a PC after all.)

Work out a deal with Sony or MS (both?) so it can play all my video games. No reason to buy a game console at that point. And no I don't want another drive. If there is a DVD/HDDVD drive already there then use it. (Making it idiot proof.)

There should also be a access panel for a satellite reciever or a cable box. I am sick of them sitting on top my TV or off to the side with cables everywhere. (By the way, these types of cards exist in Europe and are quite small.) Heck, Dell could make a buck selling DirecTV just as others do now. (Nothing like a nice monthly fee now is there?)

Provide LOTS of input ports so I can hook up my various CCTV cameras (security, farm use, etc.) Currently I have 4 cameras running through a switch box and it's butt ugly.

Now toss in some real home automation software that works over the ethernet/wireless connections. (Every appliance made is going to have this one day, get AHEAD of the curve.)

Bottom line, use your imagination and design a "system" that consumers really want and allow it to be upgraded / added to as needed. But most importantly, NO CABLES or kludged together adapters, recievers, boxes, etc,.... 1 Comment »

Perfect the home theater PC

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by mmm 02/26/07

Dell should offer and put some marketing support behind a cableCARD HTPC. This is a great category, in need of mainstream product and consumer education. Look at Sony's VGX-XL3, then make something similar without the consumer-unfriendly restrictions. Look at Niveus, and make something similar at mass market price points.

I am ready to buy a cool looking HTPC with dual tuner cableCARD, solid wireless in-home distribution, provided I don't get the blue screen of DRM or downrezzed. Such a device could be the holy grail of the digital home, if someone could just get it together. And don't force HD drives on me - they're too expensive and restrictive right now. Make it optional

I also agree with the comments re more hardware and software options, but the Linux and Firefox folks should be happy with that as an option and not force it on people who don't want it or don't care. Can't understand why people get so passionate about a browser... Comment »

ATI CableCard tuner on the XPS 410- WITHOUT Spending $2k

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by brandon_u 08/15/07

If I could buy the base XPS 410 and just add dual ATI CablCard tuners, I would buy it right now. HP offers a system with the new ATI CableCard tuner and an HDMI video card for $1,249 configured. Why can't Dell offer the 410 with the CableCard tuner without trying to make us buy all the other unnecessary junk that comes in the Blu-ray configuration. Come on, I have been waiting for this tuner for over a year now- please make it available at a competitive price!

I want to order:
The base xps 410 without a monitor or speakers and add the dual ATI TV Wonder Digital CableCard tuners. Thats all I ask. But you won't let me :( 1 Comment »
