The Linux Foundation Desktop Survey is IN ...

Linux is a desktop creature

"DESPITE a lack of enthusiasm from Linux geeks for sticking their cherished Open Sauce software on the desktop, it seems that it is in this area that the OS is stealing ground from Microsoft." ****

Use "Dell Support Center" to inform you of Driver updates for your service tag.

Service and Support, Software submitted by thundergrey Apr 1

make use of dell dupport center for something. its useless bloatware as it stands. it would be nice to get a message sent to it to let me know that there is a new BIOS update, or wireless card driver. 5 Comments »

Easier Driver Selection

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by steve.au 07/04/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Not sure about you but whenever I try to download drivers for my D600, I find it tricky choosing the correct driver.

I'd like a couple of things in order of my perception of ease of exectution;
1) Name the drivers in the support downloads section the same as how it appears in Device Manager
2) Have the service tag or serial number perform a lookup to eliminate all drivers for components not in the machine
3) Have a utility to alert me to updated drivers for one of the components. (Yes I've heard of Windows Update but it doesn't work for all components).

Our newly designed support site enables search by service tag/serial numbers. You can also register for an email alert for updated drivers.

Label the CDs with which models they affect

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Simplify IT submitted by djtansey May 20

Label the Resource CDs, and any other machine-specific CDs, with a list of which models it supports. This would make it much easier for IT departments to file their resource CDs for further use. 5 Comments »

give the origianl CD of the OS and not an ISO

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by siger May 19

when there is a problem with the Master Boot Record the ISO can't repair it and we have to go to a reparation company.

Please give us the original disc and not an ISO. IT Is more expensive but , more satisfaction for the customer. 8 Comments »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Geeks to Grandmas - Service Customization

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering providing customers the ability to self-select their service queue based on their own technical capability, such as "Advanced Computer Knowledge," "Intermediate," or "Beginner," further customizing the support experience.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 80 Comments »

Hello Again - Dedicated Teams

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering a dedicated team approach for customer service, where a customer would interact with the same people whenever they need customer care or technical support.

More Dell <-> Community Communication

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 05/15/07

Certainly, Dell's move to start IdeaStorm was a good one, and I think it will improve the situation quite a bit.

What I'd like to see is more direct and spontaneous (but somewhat official) communication between Dell employees and the users of this site. dell_admin1 does communicate with us, but mainly about administrative issues.

You get our feedback. We want your feedback. Agree?

jmxz's part of the idea (his article was merged here):

IdeasStorm needs more participation from Dell Management and Employees

Dell has meetings with the management to discuss Ideas that are posted to the site. Why can’t some of those managers stop by and ask questions or maybe enlighten users when they suggest an idea that isn’t feasible. I’m not saying they need to spend the whole day doing this but maybe just pop in once in a while. I believe that such conversations lead to better ideas not only from us but from Dell employees as well. This kind of interaction would also make users know that they are being listened to. Further information in the comments of this Idea. 210 Comments »

Sell a Better Book Reader than Amazon's Kindle.

New Product Ideas submitted by kenjennings 11/28/07

Sell the iLiad from iRex Technologies.

I looked at Amazon's attempt to nickel-and-dime people to death with the Kindle, then went out and bought an iLiad from iRex Technologies.

http://www.irextechnologies.com/products/iliad

While the Iliad is more expensive at $700, when all the fees and subscription costs for the Kindle are totaled in a year Kindle would cost more.

The iliad has a larger display and higher resolution than the Kindle with more (16) grey shades, it uses standard wifi for internet access to a FREE account on the iRex servers, and includes complete documentation for a variety of ways to produce documents in different file formats optimized for the iLiad display -- again for free.

Also, the iLiad display integrates Wacom Penabled input using Electro-Magnetic Resonance. This allows navigating menus, taking notes and making annotations in documents directly on the screen with a stylus.

In my use of the iLiad a full charge lasts a little longer than a work day with the unit turned on all day and frequent use of the stylus.

I take iLiad to work every day. I use it constantly to review specs and design docs, and take notes during meetings. Everyone who sees it is amazed by it. 9 Comments »

Help me consolidate my customer numbers on Dell.com.

Dell Web Site submitted by cosmichellion 11/29/07

I've made many purchases through dell and I have many customer numbers. It's nice that there is a feature that shows all the customer numbers and orders I've placed under Home, Home Office, SMB etc.

However, I keep wondering why the feature doesn't allow you to add customer numbers from certain other segments. When I wanted to add my new customer number and order for a recent purchase, I was given the following message...

"Only Home & Home Office, Small Business, Dell Refurbished and Dell Outlet customer numbers can be added using this feature. This customer number has not been added to your account."

If this feature doesn't do it, is there another I'm missing?

My newest purchase probably shows up under hi-ed or an EPP. It doesn't really matter, I just want to be able to keep track of all my orders in one place regardless of the segment. Can you make this happen? Comment »

Make a so called '100 dollar' laptop

submitted by badblood 11/30/07

The so called 100 dollar laptops for use in developing countries are going to make their mark as a useful computer system. Not only can such computers be used effectively in schools around the world, they will prove an attractive cheap and somewhat 'disposable' computer system for those in richer countries, as gifts for children, as computers for the elderly, for use in conference settings (due to the network abilities), and as useful systems for people working in field locations, due to their functional and robust nature and cheap price.

Should intel and OLPC make their computers available on the open market there will be considerable demand for such computers. They are cheap enough to buy as a second or third throw away computer, and have just the right amount of functionality. Basically they are value for money, whereas all other mainstream ultra portable computers are horribly overpriced and as a result we expect too much from them.

So develop a '100 dollar laptop' Even make it 200 dollars, but keep it at that. It will sell, not because it is the fastest, most powerful computer, but because rich people will see it as a disposable and useful addition to their expensive array of overpriced gadgets. 8 Comments »

No OS Preloaded

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by agreer 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

Offer a choice of regional keyboards as part of laptop configuration.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by aalary 10/28/07

I live in California but I prefer to use a French Canadian keyboard.
To get a laptop with a French Canadian keyboard, I had to order my computer from the Canadian web site dell.ca and have the computer shipped (from the USA factory) to Canada and then have it shipped back to the USA.

If it is made in the USA why can't it be shipped to the USA?

I am sure there are many people in the States that would like to use a Spanish keyboard if it was available.

Similarly, a wider selection of keyboards should be offered in most countries, both for laptops and desktops. 6 Comments »

Make the choice of Browser Optional or make it Firefox or Opera

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by badblood 10/26/07

Let us choose our default browser:

Or make Firefox or Opera the default browser, because they are better than Internet Explorer.

Please stop forcing us to use sub-standard software

I know this is a duplicate, but it is one of the most popular ideas and has been under review for such a long time that I wanted to put it up again.

I don't know about you, but waiting for an answer to this idea is getting annoying.

Color lighting change.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Inspiron products submitted by visiocloud 10/21/07

There are many different lights that light up on an inspiron notebook (power, HD, wifi, bluetooth, media control buttons, caps lock, scroll lock, num lock etc) give option one way or another to have another color than blue.
I love the blue color, but I'm sure there are other people who would like a different color. Inspirons let you pick the color for the case, so why not have lighting to match.
You can either have this an option that is picked at build, or even cooler, something that is switched on the fly on your computer. Like it's blue today, tomorrow i'll slide it to green, the next day I can do red.

Another seemingly silly idea, but yet again one of the first ideas to actually refer to the products dell makes instead of dealing with the site that we get to tell dell how to change the site that we use to tell dell to change the site that we use to tell dell to change the .... etc etc. Come on guys let's start suggesting changes for the company and not this stupid part of the website. 9 Comments »

Admit it - you were wrong....Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Service and Support submitted by badblood 10/22/07

Ten years ago this month, Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.

How the winds of success are fleeting.

Admit it - You were wrong.

Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.
