Bring More Support positions to North America

Service and Support submitted by johnsteffens Feb 11

I know for the sites in Canada that this post is far too late but people do not want to speak to individuals whose primary language is not English. This makes communication difficult for several reasons, the person calling in cannot understand the support personal the support personnel may not understand what the caller is stating and there are also large social differences that affect the way people from different cultures interact. I myself have work for Dell in their Edmonton location in the Dell on Call Department and myself have had difficult times conducting a conversations with people in other departments. Also many Dell customers are not aware of the correct terminology for what they are trying to reference and thus making it more difficult to understand what they are trying to get across, this would be a much harder task if your grasp on the language was not 100%. 1 Comment »

Provide more processor options for linux desktops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by rebresb Feb 13

Only one Linux desktop model is available (Inspiron 530N) and only one processor choice exists for it (dual core 2160). This CPU is a low-to-moderate performance choice; it is near the lowest offering in the Windows line-up. While Linux clearly out-performs Windows on modest hardware, the choice of Linux doesn't merely reflect a cost-savings and performance-optimized decision. Users may want the choice of high-end CPUs for intensive applications with Linux. Windows is not the choice of those who want high-end equipment; it requires high-end equipment to run "well". Linux users seeking peak performance will thus want fast processors. (Note that the most/fastest supercomputers run Linux). Support for such processors / motherboards isn't an issue for Linux, so certification by Dell shouldn't be difficult (??). The profit margin is likely higher on these CPUs (??), so that should be attractive. So why doesn't Dell include fast Intel or AMD offerings such as quad-core, 64 X2, core 2 extreme, etc.? 6 Comments »

more linux choices

Linux, Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by capnskyler Feb 13

i would ask that more linux distributions be considered.
ubuntu is made originally from debian, and also offer fedora 8 and perhaps gentoo as well.
you can use part of the linux distribution's online help as part of your own help system.
perhaps a linux live cd/dvd to be included with each ubuntu equipped computer sold?it lets user test drive and not have to worry about installing to the HD.
and i'd say NO to the millions LOL of linux distros, just the major players, and theones that are the easiest to use and install.even the advances of the last 2 years have made linux SIGNIFICANTLY easier to install and get everything working on the first try.

thank you 5 Comments »

Easy Dual Boot Option

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by brheitner Feb 14

IF Dell cannot have pre-configured Dual Boot Systems sold with both Ubuntu/Vista.

Can Dell include a utility to "MAKE IT EASIER" for the most basic of users to optionally install another OS?

EX- A utility that backop the HD, partions the drive, installs the Grub, Lilo or Custom Dell Boot Selector and then allows the user to install the new OS (EX: Dell Vista machine including the utility then the user can easily install Ubuntu without the "Fear" of running an ubuntu Live CD to partition the hard drive and install). 6 Comments »

Update drivers for Nvidia 8600m Gt on the Inspiron 1720

Inspiron products submitted by ali3n8 Feb 14

Hello,

As many 1720 owners that game well know there is an issue with the current drivers for the 8600m GT in vista 32bit edition. The following error is received when trying to game or use anything application that is graphically intensive "Display driver stopped responding, but has successfully recovered". Apparently this is a major issue that nvidia has acknowledged and has fixed. When will dell get on the ball put out a driver update for this card. I spent very good money for my machine love the performance but when it come to game time its pretty much hopeless. Before anyway says anything I am a Systems Engineer and know my way very well around a pc. I have tried every solution possible to fix this issue. DELL please update your drivers so I can enjoy the machine I purchased. 13 Comments »

Allow for any Linux Flavor + Windows Multi boot system

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by kutsa Feb 14

Their should be an option to have multi-boot system. Within the selector you should be able to select multiple Operating systems and the partitions required. This way someone, for example, could select WinXP and Ubuntu and SUSE. 5 Comments »

Alternative to the track pad

New Product Ideas submitted by badblood Feb 14

Trackpads are terrible, they lack accuracy, they get in the way, you are always accidentally touching them, they seem to have minds of their own. I for one really hate track pads. I've put up a couple of ideas to replace them with thumbsticks and mini joy sticks, while others offered ideas for little mouses that pop out of the side of the computer. But there's no joy there and they've all been voted down.

So there you have it, we need an alternative to the trackpad and the trackstick, thumbstick, trackball and all other varients won't fly.

Idea: Dell please invest millions of dollars and your best people to develop an innovative alternative to the terrible trackpad.

Thanks 18 Comments »

Lead Open Hardware Projects

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jdavid.net Feb 15

As a volume manufacture, Dell has the ability to really drive the price down, and they also know what it takes to produce a project. They could really be a great leader in a growing trend to produce open hardware projects.

Let people contribute to the specifications, requirements and fiscal investment for a given product.

Dell contributes as a manufacturing authority, project management, and base experts.

Investments in a project will be held in escrow and disbursed in chucks at approved milestones by the investment pool, to pay Dell staff, project expenses, and manufacturing costs.

Design contributors can vote first/ comment first, and the investors get a fair share vote based on their fiscal contributions.

Final production runs are dispersed to investors in the quantity requested. While the difference between what is pledged, and what the sale price is, assuming the sale price is lower than the pledged amount, will be used as a general investment into a fund that pays dividends. Dividends will be based on the new percentage ownership of the product model, after units ship. If a an investor does not provide enough for a full unit, that money is held as an investment in the project, until the value ownership equals a unit, or until a date when the investor is able to exit from the project given fiscal resources available.

Dell would reserve some fraction, say 50% ownership, and 50% of the gross margin profits, while the other half is pushed out to the investment group in proportional value.

This should be a model that provides economic value for Dell, while enabling a community to innovate, while not having to solve the scalability and manufacturing problems that plague hardware projects.

I think the karma on this would be huge, think wikipedia for hardware.

Project areas that might be of particular focus for open hardware projects:

*open game consoles
*living room devices
*mobile platforms (android might be a good start)
*Internet appliances
*scientific computing
*render farming
*embedded applications 3 Comments »

Offer Link to Live CD

Sales Strategies submitted by ellipsis Feb 14

Place a link to the Live CD when there is a choice for Linux. Allow people to try Linux before they buy it. Dell should also note that your Ubuntu is "enhanced" because of the DVD features it is now offering. 2 Comments »

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 734 Comments »

Dell: Extend your Staples and Best Buy offerings!!!!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice Jan 7

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/best_buy?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?zipCode=4411...

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?&secondlevel...

Those links above can easily prove that your Staples and Best Buy offerings continue to be ridiculously limited. What I mean is that you are doing pretty well on your Inspiron offerings. But come on, only one XPS notebook (the M1330), still no XPS desktops (only an all-in-one, and even that is only at Best Buy), and still no Vostros????????

Quite a few of us believe that you REALLY need to extend your Staples offerings (if you look here), and I think that you should do likewise with Best Buy.

XPS systems that you should offer at BOTH Staples and Best Buy (both in their in-person stores and on their Web sites):

- XPS M1330 notebook (already offered)
- XPS M1710 notebook
- XPS One all-in-one desktop (currently offered only at Best Buy, please sell at Staples too)
- XPS 420 desktop
- XPS 720 desktop

Vostro systems that you should offer (again, both at Staples and at Best Buy, and again, both in their in-person stores and on their Web sites):

- Vostro 1400 notebook
- Vostro 1700 notebook
- Vostro 200 slim tower
- Vostro 200 mini tower
- Vostro 400 mini tower

Of course, I would appreciate it if you could sell more XPS and Vostro systems at Staples and Best Buy in-person stores and on their Web sites, in addition to the ones mentioned above. But please offer at least the systems mentioned above.

But on the Vostro and XPS systems that you offer at Staples and Best Buy in-person stores and on their Web sites, please no Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium (or Vista Business for that matter), that is what you already have on the Inspirons. The Vostro and XPS systems at Staples and Best Buy in-person stores and on their Web sites should come with Vista Ultimate. 1 Comment »

To pursue GREEN, promote LINUX (or XP) over Vista

Environment, Linux, Servers and Storage submitted by phubert Jan 17

Linux is greener than Vista

[Microsoft] will try to force its customer base to migrate onto Vista, but moving to Linux instead might be a greener and more cost-effective alternative.

Green Laptops

submitted by axbhalla Jan 24

Dell should come up with a superior, stylish XPS laptop that uses top of the line energy efficient batteries, smart power saving, high processor performance at very low votage, and perhaps include a donation toward the purchase of carbon offsets to make the Dell Green Laptop officially carbon neutral.

The shell should be eco-friendly, recycleable material while still boasting a sleek, sturdy design.

Dell can capitalize by making the Green Laptop a fashion statement, supporting environment with green innovations. 6 Comments »
