Dell needs to give us more information on the adjustability of the LCD monitors when configuring a pc.

Dell, Desktops, Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by sugarbear 11/19/07

On the Dell website when building a pc, Dell needs to show if the LCD monitors are adjustable up, down, swivel, and tilt. The four listed on building an Inspiron 530 don`t show any thing. 13 Comments »

Large Screen Monitor Giveaway

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by mccoy 11/16/07

Dell should give every customer a free 32inch monitor display with the purchase of every inspiron notebook - for use at the office. It's the least they can do. 31 Comments »

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Include cleaning and screen protection cloth with laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jkeating 11/02/07

A nice dell branded cleaning cloth should be included with new laptops. This cloth would be used to clean the laptop sceens as well as lay on top of the keyboard when the laptop is closed to protect the screen from keyboard imprints. If a cloth is included it is far more likely that this cloth would be used to clean rather than some other cleaning device which may damage a user's screen. 10 Comments »

PCIe Flash Drive for OS

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by coachcg 11/14/07

This would be great to get in new Dell laptops:

SanDisk revealed Vaulter, a 8GB or 16GB flash drive that can hold your entire OS, designed to sit on the PCIe port inside a laptop. In Windows, this creates a separate letter drive, which speeds the heck out of your computer, without taking the place of your 2.5" SATA-connected HDD. It's not a Santa Rosa "Robson" thing either—it's a real drive, not some caching assistant. (In case you're wondering, Mac support is coming.) Performance acceleration comes from "pre-controlling the distribution of storage data between itself and the hard drive." The fact that it's on the PCIe port means that both storage devices can work in parallel. Now, the bad news: SanDisk is only offering it to OEM partners at first. We won't be able to buy them a la carte for a little while.

Even better if we can get them for upgrades to current laptop models. 14 Comments »

Easier way to OPT OUT of Dell selling my private information

Advertising and Marketing submitted by ninefoot3 10/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I rec'd a brochure yesterday saying Dell and DFS were going to share my private info with other 3rd party companies for marketing purposes. Well, it said that in about 5,000 words or so. At the end is a box stating that I may opt-out of this by calling the number listed or writing a letter (including certain info) and send it to the listed address.

I chose to use the phone method. After being shoved around to a few people, I finally got someone who could help me 'opt-out'. This involved 'opening a case' as if I had a technical issue with my account.

My IdeaStorm suggestion, hey Dell, make it easier for us to OPT-OUT of your attempts to make money off of my personal information. What's the matter? Didn't make enough money off of my patronage to Dell products and the interest rates charged? Getting an extra $1 for my name, address and age information going to help Michael Dell get a new boat? C'mon!

While I'm disturbed that Dell wanted to sell me out, I'm more disturbed that Dell made it difficult for us to opt-out. A simple URL would have been nice. I know, that would make more people opt-out and Dell would have less names to sell. It's like a mail-in-rebate or the lack of a cancel button in the account information at freecreditreport.com, you HAVE to call, and since that's a pain in the neck, most people will sloth themselves into something they don't really want. 42 Comments »

Please remove the requirement "up to 10 words" when reporting abuse.

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice 11/21/07

When I click "Report abuse." to report abuse on an idea or a comment I see this first.

"Please indicate the type of abuse. (up to 10 words) [Report] [Cancel]"

Why is the requirement "(up to 10 words)" there? Is it so hard to allow more than 10 words? Sometimes when I report abuse I need to type more than 10 words to fully explain the type of abuse.

At least please explain to us why there is such a requirement. 8 Comments »

Making 16:9 Widescreen Monitors for PCs instead of 16:10.

Monitors and Displays submitted by vanderlot 11/13/07

If Dell make monitors like these, then we wouldn't have to worry about getting a LCD TV to hookup to our computers or to any another component to receive signals from here and there (and LCD TVs doesn't always deliver picture perfect quality anyways). Having a type of monitor that will work with everything (especially with movies without having black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and we haven't been focusing on that when it comes on to computers).

So I'm suggesting that you guys consider doing something like this and have a sleek design relative to the current 16:10 LCD monitors. The monitors may carry a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 or more depending the size of the displays. You could still have the 16:10 monitors but separating those from the 16:9 monitors. I think it's a great idea. 15 Comments »

Ubuntu Dell Repo

Linux, Service and Support submitted by tekhawk 07/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.

Reducing power use of PC attached peripherals

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by garygary 11/21/07

It is good that Dell is paying more attention to PC energy use, but on our two computers, the peripherals hooked to the computer use more power than the PC itself does. So, if the PC goes into hibernate or standby, the peripherals are still consuming power -- quite a bit in our case.

To reduce power consumption by peripherals I installed a "Mini Power Minder", which powers down all of my peripherals when the computer goes into hibernate. It knows when to do this via a USB connection.

http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/Conservation/MiniPowerMinder.htm

So, my idea is, why not build the equivalent of this into each desktop computer. Basically provide one switched AC outlet on the back that powers down when the computer goes into hibernate or standby. A power strip could be plugged into this outlet, and all peripherals that don't need continuous power could be plugged into this power strip.

The savings for our two computers would be:
(54 watts + 10 watts)(7600 hrs idle PC time/yr) = 490 KWH/yr
A $50 saving in electricity and nearly 1000 lbs CO2.

Based on these measurements with a KillAWatt:

Making LCD Monitors more visual friendly

Monitors and Displays submitted by vanderlot 11/18/07

In these days of technology,... LCD monitors have played an important rule in letting us see things even better and never thought possible. And now, it is so advanced that it is even becoming more unfriendly to human sight.

I know that there is alot of things to be done and if Dell can do something about the radiation or the radiant images or any other that is related to this issue of violent light that is coming out of these new monitors then people wouldn't have to worry about wearing glasses or placing something over the screens to protect their eyes.

Sales could double knowing that no one has to worry about the issue of radiation and turning to other source of help (even though people are already buying LCD monitors due to the limited existents of CRT monitors).

The key is to invent or develop something into the future monitors that can reduce stress to the eyes (especially for people who stare at their screens everyday). 19 Comments »

IdeaStorm: Add an Abstain vote option to Ideas to give people on the fence an option.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/02/07

Not all Ideas can be mote and demote, for some, one would want to just abstain.

So get another Java button ready SalesForce, and another DB field to hold the abstain votes, don't forget a counter as well so we know how many people have abstained on an idea.

IdeaStorm: IdeaStorm-Decision2007; Since putting a mod on full time here is UNDER REVIEW, I say we should get a vote on who we get as a full time mod.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/03/07

The full time mod will be dealing with the IdeaStorm community so its best we get to vote in on who gets to be the full time mod to make the interaction here the best it can be to give Dell the best liaison be the IdeaStorm members and Dell.

This Idea is for the community to nominate and vote a full time mod for IdeaStorm, this would be the first round so a mote would mean to let us have the vote on the full time mod, a demote would mean you don't care to have such an input. In the comments you can nominate who you want to move on to the individual voting for IdeaStorm-Decison2007, maybe 2008 not sure how fast we can act on this one. Nominees can decine of course so thats why we need the second round for those wanting to take part in the position.

I mean Dell wants more interaction with its customers so what better way than to have the community here to have input on who is best suited to be the full time mod. This would prove to us that Dell wants to interact and listen to the customer base here on IdeaStorm and not side step the Dell consumers and keep thinking as in its old ways of directly overlooking the obvious, the customers which are buying their products.

Reference Idea

The Small Type (actually in big font so its not hidden unlike the Dell warranttee, we're customers so we don't hide things like kickback payments).

Of course we're talking about a paid position to equal if not exceed the current part time mod's full time salary (proof will be needed), I mean Dell wants a real full time mod after all not a part time over worked (like 80 hours) manager who can't keep track of their own statements to the public or Dell customer base. All Dell benefits as well, health, 401k, discounts, 13 assistants even if they're at random times to cover in case of an emergency or 3 vacations in 6 months and a piece of the kickbacks (you thought I forgot), opps and of course profit sharing via stocks or bonus payment on yearly earnings (not sure its a good thing they're keeping better track now). One more minor thing, work remotely at anytime, its a computer company so this concept should not be foreign or odd in any way shape or form. 28 Comments »

Dell: Dude! You're getting Dell Instant On OS!

Operating Systems submitted by jorge 11/06/07

This is the next step Dell, get on the bandwagon now!

Elaboration: Dell use or create your own Instant-On-OS, much like or just like Phoenix Technology's HyperSpace or SplashTop! You can make the decision but get one of those on board now!

More Elaboration: its for any OS so no matter which fence you sit on you'll get faster boot times! How can you beat that!

End Elaboration----Instant On OS

This is not only the fastest to boot OS but will also make you green, environmentally and financially! On top of that you can also include the bloated Microsoft OS on a hard drive (soon to be phased out, the hard drive that is, before you MS fans get tweeked).

So add this to all your motherboards as an option when configuring a system to order, also leave the hooks in there so anyone who's shortsighted now can still add it later, at a cost of course.

More stuff! Make the Instant OS to allow writing to a hard drive, usb flash memory or usb/firewire attached drive! Also, with the ability to update it and customize it to the users apps. Without these two add-ons its just a waste of resources. So this idea will only apply if its allows for writing to media (all) and being able to update it. 38 Comments »

IdeaStorm: Idea Points on Merges, what is happening? We need a detailed algorithm as to what is happening!

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/07/07

Ok, we've complained till the site almost buckled and then retracted (due to wrongful merges). Now yes the merges are good for ideas that are identical or at least 90% identical and the poster agrees (note, the poster of the dupe or semi-dupe agrees to have their idea merged), but to this date we don't know what is happening to the vote counts and how its handled, it might be buried in some idea's comments but its still not clear (at least to me) what is going on.

Idea: Have the person applying the merges list out the process of the merge and the outcome of votes and points pro and con that exist in an idea. Then the same person needs to tell us why the merge victim doesn't know their idea was merged? Is there no possible way of doing this? YES! Lets use the link method mentioned by cosh's idea (I'll get the link later, but I'm sure a search would find it, HA!). 9 Comments »

IdeaStorm: The IdeaStorm Troopers should get an IdeaStorm tag like the Dell tag for Dell employee's.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/13/07

I think the IdeaStorm troopers should get an IdeaStorm logo tag on their names like the Dell people have on theirs. Then add an RSS feed for any updates by the troopers so we know its a IST update. This way we can follow more closely the IST moves on this site. 31 Comments »

IdeaStorm: Have the default URL to IdeaStorm point at a blank listing and allow the user to pick from the four tabs on their own.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/14/07

The current default web page will list the popular ideas tab, instead due to the current state of dis-affairs have the default page list the IdeaStorm FAQ or TOU's, or even better a blank listing and allow the user the decision to click one of the four tabs or the other user tabs. The current method leads the user to post/vote without knowing the rules and the consequences of not knowing them.

If anything jump to a random idea, as in random not a planned random. 9 Comments »
