Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by tcpaulh Jun 3

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

For example the M1530 although specified with 90-100 degree vertical viewing angles, the reality is that there is at best a 15-20 degree vertical viewing angle before colour inversion occurs.

Vertical viewing angles at present do not appear to conform to stated specifications!

Dell have been promising better viewing angles since 2002 with Ultrasharp screens but these screens are still not available across the XPS line of laptops.

Please sort it out Dell and stop using the cheapest screen technology in your premium products.

Thank you. 9 Comments »

Wireless and Bluetooth Hotkey

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by pepejose Jun 4

I saw it in a asus laptop (I'm not sure).

When you press the bluetooth and wifi hotkey, it changes the configuration:

Wireless and bluetooth off

Wireless off bluetooth on

Wireless on bluetooth on

Wireless on bluetooth off

It's very interesting since in my inspiron (for example) there is only one hotkey for this.

Or make available one hotkey for wifi and another for bluetooth 1 Comment »

Loctite Laptop Screws to Improve Durability

Laptops submitted by gear Jun 4

I have been traveling with a barely 6 week old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop.

Today, I noticed that a few screws have started to work loose, so I tightened every single screw on the bottom panel that I can reach, and here is what I found:

On the edge closest to user: all 4 screws have worked loose and was in danger of falling out had I not tightened it.

On the edge furthest away from user: 4 screws loosened a bit.

On the left hand side: 4 screws generally OK
.
Screws holding the "access cover" in place: 2 loosened, one nearly to the point of falling out.

I don't even want to think about how the screws I cannot see inside the machine are holding up --- or are they all quietly working their way out ?

This is not good....

Quite frankly, this is rather disappointing.

Either the screws were not properly tightened, or they worked loose over time.

I don't know if Dell uses Loctite or a similar product in assembly, but if you don't, it is time to do so.

It is also very probable that the chassis has too much flex in it, and the screws are working loose in spite of using a Loctite like product.

Somehow, I don't think the Inspiron 1525 is one of the most durable laptops Dell ever built.

This kind of build quality can cost Dell plenty when it comes to warranty costs. 5 Comments »

Dell operating systems ISO files

Operating Systems submitted by natakuc4 Jun 4

Instead of people having to go to the hassle for ordering a new cd for thier operating system when lost. Make the dell oems available to download as an iso file, obviously without a product key, the one at the back of the machine to be used in conjunction with the download.

I made my own xp cd have sp3 with nlite but I'm sure others would like having xp sp3 available to download as an oem cd. 11 Comments »

Laptops submitted by kailer Jun 6

My laptop graphic card is eating up alot of my energy, that is what i realize.so it will be great if we can turn off the graphic card while we are not gaming but turn it on if we need it....
because if i am doing work using laptop using the graphic card without running on power source...i cant finish my work in such a short time.i might as well turn off my graphic card because Microsoft word doesn't need great graphic to work on it......
it be great for those who wants a gaming laptop while the laptop can last long too when you are not gaming... 3 Comments »

Notify Customer BEFORE Cancelling Orders

Service and Support submitted by n4aof Jun 6

When Dell decides that they aren't interested in filling a customer's confirmed order it would be nice if Dell would bother notifying the customer (preferably before cancelling the order, but certainly at least immediately afterward). 2 Comments »

Supply a 'free'good quality bag/sleeve with new Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by missdiva Jun 8

Dell should supply a FREE good quality bag and sleeve with all new Laptops, bearing in mind that customers have spent a considerable amount of money on their product.

Customers wouldn't then have to rush out to buy a bag/sleeve to protect their purchase. 9 Comments »

Make Linux a choice on all systems

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by synful Jun 8

Guys, why is it when you can allegedly get Linux on desktops and laptops, that it is never an option in the configuration of a product prior to purchasing?

All we seem to get as an option is Windows and then there is no option to not have Windows as an operating system. I understand that you may have reasons behind the system not having Linux as an option but surely you do not use hardware that is so non standard that either Ubuntu or SuSE will not work on it?

In the event that the computer that you use is not Linux compatible, then note this on the configuration page accordingly. For arguments sake have a pop up advising that some hardware is not compatible with Linux if it is selected as an OS choice. 1 Comment »

Webcam with Nightvision

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by baurth Jun 9

I wish Dell's Webcams had some sort of nightvision. This way, my remote-surveillance-software would also work by night and give me clear pictures (of intruders etc). 1 Comment »

Warn Buyers Dell Laptops Must Use Dell Charger

Service and Support, Laptop Power submitted by gear Jun 9

Dell laptops use a charger that has a built in "chip".

If you try to use a non-Dell Charger, it will only power the machine, but will not charge the battery.

So if you are traveling and lose your adapter or it failed, you have to get one from DELL.

The only problem is, DELL typically take days to weeks to ship a new adapter to you if you are in the USA, and if you are outside, much longer if it is available at all.

So a bad / lost Adapter means your DELL Laptop just became a paperweight. One too expensive to be thrown out.

The only non-Dell adapter that works is the Kensington brand adapter, but that is only distributed at Circuit City in the US, and even these ones may not come with the "tip" needed to work with a DELL.

DELL is the only major manufacturer to actively prevent people from using non-Dell adapters in their notebooks.

Apparently DELL hasn't figured out that people travel and may not be able to wait in one place for a while for a spare adapter to be sent to them from DELL.

Want some real fun? Try to get a spare Dell adapter in a mid sized city in China.... 2 Comments »

use open hardware

Desktops and Laptops submitted by bootdoc1 Jun 10

I have read many posts asking Dell to supply linux kernel drivers for all their hardware. I suggest that dell stop using proprietary hardware! Use only hardware that have open drivers. All OSes would benefit. 2 Comments »

Latitude XT Battery Slice improvement

Latitude products submitted by koshea331 Jun 10

We are in the process of installing new Latitude XT tablet computers, so far we are impressed with the units. The one main suggestion I would make is that the Battery Slice should allow you to pass through connect to the base. It seems silly that they only way you can run the XT in the base and recharge the slice is sepperatly. I seems that it would just need a pass through connector that would allow for both the XT use in the base and to recharge both the main and the slice batteries.

Thanks,

Stealth Mode for XPS laptops

XPS products submitted by jhaber Jun 10

I think it would be nice if the next XPS notebooks included an integrated graphics card that can be switched to, along with a Stealth mode that can be switched to (like your newest Alienware line). These modes would really increase the battery. The m15x gets 2:30 on a six cell... I think that you guys can do a lot better with the XPS line. 2 Comments »

Up to 16 GB of RAM on Dell Precision Workstation Laptops

Precision Workstations submitted by workpenguin Jun 11

I use my Dell laptop as a VMWare-based virtual lab workstation with 32 bits Linux host for (supporting up to 32GB of RAM available to applications), and I do not plan to buy a new laptop until it supports up to 16GB of RAM.

This would allow running all of my virtual LABs and working on my virtual architecture for testing and planning purposes before further hardware testing and deployment. And I need a laptop as I'm always moving. I am often working with 5-9 virtual guests, and more, some of them requiring more than 1GB RAM to work.

I know that I am not the only one in this situation. I wish this would be available until 1 year, when my Dell support will expire. 1 Comment »

Fix "My Systems & Peripherals" website

Dell Web Site submitted by audiofree Jun 11

The idea behind “My system and Peripherals” is a nice one. You get to add all your service tags in one place and the site keeps track of things like when your warrantee is up etc. This is very nice if you’re tracking 20+ items.

About 3 months ago dell “Upgraded” the website making it almost useless in the process. The first big problem is when your sort by “Contract Expiration Date” it’s not sorting by numbers. IE rather then showing

11 Days
105 days
127 Day

They show
105 days
11 Days
127 Day

How dumb is that? Because 105 is before 11 if you’re sorting as text. Rooky mistake can’t believe it’s been 3 months and they haven’t fixed it.

Next useful feature they removed from the upgraded page is the ability to extend your service contract. Before you could check on an item and “View Purchase options” and it would show you how much it would cost to upgraded the warrantee for 1 year or 2 years etc.. now that has been taken away, and you have to call in and hope you can work your way though the Dell phone maze to find someone that will give you the info and take the order.

I have no idea why dell would have taken a useful part of their website and messed it up so badly on an “Update”. Yes they put in some new fancy things but man took out the one real useful part and left in such a bad bug in sorting I can’t believe they haven’t fixed it.

In short. Fix the bugs. And allow us to extend our warrantees over the web like we used to. We hate calling. Comment »

Need better ways to get ideas reviewed and not get lost in the noise

IdeaStorm submitted by gerrygiese Jun 11

What I wonder is based on the volume of "ideas" coming in (many of which seem duplicative, inane, or noise-level non-ideas), how can a more valid topic get more traffic to see if it really withstands community review? I think some of the stuff comes in so fast that many ideas never really get reviewed unless somebody is willing to scroll through pages and pages of recent "ideas" to find them.

I'd like to see a new tab or tabs dedicated to items that got more positive votes than negative, maybe at least a 3:1 ratio?. But these ideas are still under a certain threshold, either something like less than 200, or that have not received X number of votes in the past week.

The "ideas in action" weekly recaps are one way for dell employees to promote certain ideas. Can dell employees vote for ideas? If they can, and I think they should, since it's their company, and their votes should be worth more (20? 50?). If we create an idea and a dell employee likes it, why shouldn't they be able to promote it? Dell employees can obviously help sort the wheat from the chaff, so I say let 'em do it.

I might draw the line at letting dell employees creating ideas -- they have their own process for that. But on the other hand, I've heard of plenty of times where an employee had an idea but their manager thought it was stupid, so the employee left, started a new company, and went gangbusters, making the manager look like the stupid one. If a dell employee has an idea and they want the community to review it, I suppose why not? 11 Comments »

"Dell E" Find a new name for your new computer...

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood Jun 13

Dell's upcoming netbook ultaramobile thing is apparently going to be called the 'Dell E' which sounds like Deli, where you can buy milk, bread and other nice things.

Please think of another name. Have a naming competition on Ideastorm.

I vote for the Dell Lite as in delight!
