Reverse Video

Servers and Storage, Laptops submitted by r.pelzer 10/26/07

Hi,

As a techie i'm walking around with my notebook to all kinds of server. Sometimes you want to look at a server, but there is no monitor availible.
Would there be a way to connect a notebook to the vga connector of the server and view the output on the notebook screen?

I would buy a new notebook for that option !

Cheers.

Something like Asus's "Splashtop" fast-booting secure web-surfing environment.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by jmxz May 19

Asus is putting their
Splashtop environment in all their new motherboards.

Splashtop is described by DeviceVM as a "secure web-surfing environment", and is embedded on motherboards so that it can be booted within seconds, as an alternative to booting up a full operating system. ...

"In response to great user feedback, our plan is to proliferate Express Gate across our entire motherboard-product portfolio, ...

"Consumers want to turn their PCs on and off like any other appliance"

I'd very much like to simply turn my Dell's on and off like any other appliance, and be able to instantly launch a web browser without even having to wait for a hard disk to spin up. 2 Comments »

Provide a master network driver resource kit that can be loaded onto a USB drive

Simplify IT submitted by djtansey May 20

The number one headache I have with reinstalling windows on Dell machines is that almost 100% of the time I have no network access until I reinstall the network driver from the resource CD. Since I am often working on multiple machines, it's hard to keep the CDs straight.

if there could be a resource kit made available with the drivers (or with some default driver) for networking, it would make IT jobs much easier. Once the network is up, the rest of the drivers can be done easy. Comment »

Remove any reference to Vista from the "Still looking for Windows XP?" page

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by drewness May 21

When the "still looking for Windows XP?" link on Dell.com is clicked, one is subjected to an obvious pitch for Vista. Get rid of any reference to Vista from this page! It's a no-brainer! 1 Comment »

Option to include certain cables with your laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by james-94 May 21

There should be an option when customizing a laptop to include certain types of cables with it.
VGA, DVI, HDMI and S-Video cables should be available to choose from. 7 Comments »

use open firmware on all systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by dgilmore May 21

Rather than using a closed bios that is limited in functionality. Use open firmware http://www.openfirmware.org/ on all systems. it gives greater flexibility and will allow dell to provide open source solutions from top to bottom. 3 Comments »

Bring back the LAPTOP

Laptops submitted by falbert May 22

Please make a useable "laptop" ie:computer that you can put on your lap...

Make it cooler : I know we want more performance but you can find a way
Make it quieter by using silent fans and heat pipes
Place the air intakes on the sides not on the bottom. 5 Comments »

Notebook ports on the back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by falbert May 22

Am I the only one that hates having ports of anykind on the sides of my notebook. I like my ports out of sight in the back.
Maybe the headphone jack in the front and a few USB ports on the sides at the back.
I would suggest dropping : parralel, serial, pcmcia, infrared, mic input (integrate it in or use bluetooth) and the modem (who uses 56k modems today???) 10 Comments »

Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.com

Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 22 **REVIEWED**

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked.

Recomendations for M1730

XPS products submitted by codyfranklin205 May 23

I have seen the M1730, and I am amazed at this high end gaming laptop, but... Dell leaves something to be desired. I have combined several (say... 80) reviews as well as my own experience to summarize what should be included in the next lineup. Below I have listed some recomendations for the next model.

1. HDMI output
2. Internal modem
3. More USP ports
4. Gigabit ethernet
5. More color options for lid
6. Availible WiFi with 4 types (a/b/g/n) 5 Comments »

Ask Your Customers to Write A Review of Their Dell Experience

Service and Support submitted by joyscant1980 May 24 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Having great products will not do much for you if you do not provide a good experience through the whole purchase. This includes ordering, dealing with customer care when there are delays, the financial services department, everything.

Some people love your products but hate your service, you are losing customers because of it and worse yet, potential customers. Let your present customers tell you what it is like to buy your products IN THEIR OWN WORDS and not on a scale from 1 - 10.

If you appear to be making a real effort to correct what has gone wrong with your company, a customer may be willing to give you a second chance but you have to make the effort. The first step is finding out what kind of experience each customer had.

Knowing where you are helps you in finding where you need to go.

Lower the price on your LED backlit screens.

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 24

Currently Dell charges $150 to upgrade a notebook to a LED backlit screen. A recent article shows the price difference between the two technologies is only about $8 now. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4424

I know there are additional costs for Dell to build the thinner casing to hold the LED but I don't see plastic costing $100 (leaving $42 for profit). I expect that Dell could drop the cost by $50 to $75 easily which would drive sales and continue to drop the cost of the technology. 4 Comments »

Additional options for the XPS M1730

XPS products, Laptop Power submitted by killadaedalus May 24

The main disadvantage to the XPS m1730 is the battery life. Many other companies- such as Alienware- offer "smart bays" these are additional bays in which an extra optical drive, hard drive, or (in this case) it would be a very good idea to have an additional battery. I believe that you do offer something similar to this but not in this version of the laptop. With the addition of an extra battery gaming on the go does not need to stop every hour or so.

Another idea to help extend battery life is giving this laptop the ability to switch off the duel graphics cards when they are not being used to significantly increase battery life.

My final point is that Dell should offer the "IntelĀ® Turbo Memory" This is basically an extra 1GB of RAM which is used to store the most frequently used files of the computer, so when you come to use these files again they are loaded from this cache and not the hard drive. Hence greatly decreasing the time taken. 3 Comments »

Put the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT as an option for the XPS M1530

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by darthomer May 25

Put the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT as an option for the XPS M1530 it is as big the 256MB card avalible right now but this one is 512MB and will make Games way faster and better looking than the 256MB card avalible. if Dell does this than the XPS M1530 will be one of the most popular laptops at Dell infact I think that the only thing I didn't like about the XPS M1530 is its poor GPU. The Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX is the same power but I didn't say that one because its too thick this one is like 4cm thick. it could add another $50 $100 $150 to this PCs price tag but its worth it

Add higher screen resolution to all home & home office laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ccpljat Apr 25

I have been using a used [another brand's] business laptop that has a high screen resolution. The cheaper Inspiron laptops can only go up to 1280x800. I cannot be productive on a screen that small any more. At least bump it up to 1440x900 or equivalent. I have basically been forced to shop in the Small Business section to find an affordable computer with a higher screen resolution. 12 Comments »
