Windows key becomes "Super" key

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by hexagrapher 10/05/07

In many Linux distributions the "Windows" key is already called the "Super" key. "Super" is neutral and so does not favor anyone; "Super" fits thematically as a meta-key between "Ctrl" and "Alt". 3 Comments »

BLACK backlit keyboard for Dell XPS M1730

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by lorax1284 08/31/07

I know there are threads asking for Backlit keyboards: many of them merged into one.

Dell is introducing a backlit keyboard in the XPS M1730. Super.

But it's white-ish colour contrasts badly with the case.

Other comments about how "fugly" the XPS M1730 have been mitigated by the appearance of better photos (mostly with the screen / lid closed!) so maybe the outside of the M1730 case will be just fine... but that white backlit keyboard is a non-starter: opening the lid for the first time will be like seeing a beautiful stone along the forest trail, only when you pick it up, underneath is gross things crawling over other grosser things.

Consider this a backpedal from my "I'll wait for the XPS redesign" idea, cuz it's starting to look like I really only have to wait for Dell to source a black backlit keyboard. 5 Comments »

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

How an existing windows customer migrate to or install Ubuntu?

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by yesmathew 08/26/07

As Dell also pre-installs Ubuntu on selected Notebooks and Desktops. As most of the Dell computers are Ubuntu friendly. Many existing Dell users would like to switch to or try Ubuntu Linux, a Dell web site or wiki dedicated on this subject will encourage to try a better and safer free operating system to those who do not want to dump their computers for new non-free operating system. Help reduce e-waste. Save Planet.

Remember:
- "Windows viruses” are not computer viruses.
- "Windows bugs” are not computer bugs.
- "Windows blue screen deaths” are not computer blue screen deaths.
- "Windows performance issues" are not computer performance issues. 27 Comments »

All versions of Vista for Inspiron laptop series (All laptops)

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by saleemohaib 08/25/07

I was recently checking out the new and beautiful Dell Inspiron 1720/1721 and saw that no Vista Ultimate is offered. I think it would be a good idea to offer all versions of Vista for customers to chose from. Including the 64bit Vista Ultimate for customers who want to but a laptop with 4GB of RAM.

Make keyboard color customizable

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by wing044 08/23/07

Let customers choose their keyboard color. Such as choosing black keyboards in Vostro laptops to the silver ones in Inspirons. This also make my laptop more unique. Now Inspirons are available in 8 colors, if keyboard color is customizable, it will become 16 different combinations. It's not difficult to do at all since the keyboards are interchangable. 5 Comments »

Put Wubi EXE and Ubuntu Feisty ISO on Desktop of all Windows Systems

Linux, Software submitted by limulus 08/18/07

There have been MANY requests for Windows/Linux dual-boot systems on IdeaStorm and likely they won't be approved; quoting Mark Shuttleworth:

Asked whether Dell should be offering dual-boot Windows/Ubuntu Linux systems, Shuttleworth said it was an interesting idea but not something he imagined would happen anytime soon as it would probably conflict with existing contractual obligations. "As soon as you try to fit two people into one chair so to speak, you run into contractual issues, and those issues are not from our side. But I'm not at all averse to the idea. I don't mind if someone wants to run Windows next to Ubuntu," he said.

In other words, Microsoft won't allow it.

However, what about Wubi?

Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, this is for you.

---
Wubi is Safe

It does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader.

Wubi is Simple

Just run the installer, no need to burn a CD.

Wubi is Discrete

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and If you do not like, you can simply uninstall it. [ed. note: uninstalling is done via Windows' Add/Remove Programs :]

Wubi is Free

Wubi (like Ubuntu) is free as in beer and as in freedom [ed. note: its licensed under the GPL]. You will get this part later on, the important thing now is that it cost absolutely nothing, it is our gift to you...
---

Read more here.

What I am specifically proposing is that Dell put the Wubi installer EXE and the Ubuntu Feisty ISO (and probably a little readme.txt file) on new systems (though not installed) so that end users can try Linux from the comfort of Windows. If Dell doesn't actually install Wubi (just have the EXE and ISO sitting on the desktop or a directory such) then that should hopefully bypass any contractual obligations Dell is under on its Windows machines...

It won't cost Dell anything (its free software) and if a user doesn't want it, they can just delete the directory and that's that.

Get rid of this 'Dell recommends Windows Vista' rubbish from the Linux pages, and preferably altogether.

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by stoodleysnow 08/17/07

To say you're finally supporting linux, this isn't exactly 'whole-hearted' support. I understand Microsoft have you in their pocket, but you could at least allow mentions of Ubuntu on the home page, and have a few less of Windows on the Linux pages.
Please.
And how about advertising your new product range? 8 Comments »

Dell Include a Ubuntu CD with every purchase of a Non-Ubuntu OS System for every System you sell.

Dell, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 08/14/07

Dell Include a Ubuntu CD with every purchase of a Non-Ubuntu OS System for every System you sell.

Your other non-Ubuntu OS offerings are hurting due to viruses, Trojans, e-mail bombs, worms, random system errors, un-reproducible memory handling errors, the list goes on. Offering them a second option once they experience the pain and agony is the best thing Dell can do.

Show your customers you care and provide them with a Ubuntu OS install CD (which can run in Live mode as well). 15 Comments »

Dell needs more cowbell. For instance...

Dell submitted by benjesuit 08/13/07

The new XPS 1730 - preliminary

NEEDS MORE COWBELL!!!

DELL's design department lacks a cowbell player. I'm convinced of it. He only got to play one song as a "guest" musician and this was it...

PLENTY OF COWBELL!!!

So much so, Dell couldn't keep up with the demand.

So Dell, simply put, y'all need mo' cowbell. 90 Comments »

Compensation for "Dell"ays of the XPS1330 and Inspirons

Dell submitted by benjesuit 08/10/07

Many customers are experiencing unpredented build/shipping delays for orders placed weeks ago. Many of those customers are heading back to school/college in just a few weeks.

Dell should meaningfully compensate these customers for the unusual delay experience. 2 Comments »

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Offer all Vista options on all PCs

Operating Systems submitted by winoffice 07/20/07

Offer all Vista options on all PCs.

Often, the only choice you get is Home Premium (sometimes Home Basic or Business). To get Ultimate, you need to get an expensive XPS system. We want all choices available, and that is what Dell does not offer. Please offer all Vista choices (this means Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate) on all Dell PCs, just as you offered all XP choices on all computers when Vista was not out there yet!

(By the way, to Linux fans, please note that everywhere I said "offer!" The default, however, could be Ubuntu or something else, if you wish.) 32 Comments »
